GOOD WORKSWhen the third annual Tortuga Music Festival takes place April 11-12 at Fort Lauderdale Beach Park in Florida, the celebration comes with a mission: to make a difference on the water just beyond the concert site.
The Rock the Ocean Foundation booked Kenny Chesney, Jake Owen, Zac Brown Band, Josh Turner, Colt Ford and The Mavericks among this year’s acts, but along with the entertainment is the Conservation Village, a series of exhibits that call attention to modern issues that have placed the oceans in peril. This year’s village includes information about the preservation of sea turtles, overfishing, the destruction of coral reefs and shark conservation.
More than 44,000 people attended Tortuga in 2014.
TWEET OF THE WEEKDisagree if you must with the politics of Dixie Chicks vocalist Natalie Maines (@1NatalieMaines), but it’s tough to dispute her logic on coloring eggs for Easter:
“Against the advice of others, I like to put all of my eggs in one basket;)”

ON THE CHARTS
Zac Brown Band’s Traditional ‘Homegrown’ No. 1 For Second Week
Zac Brown Band’s “Homegrown” (Varvatos/Republic/Big Machine Label Group/Southern Ground) spends a second week at No. 1 on Billboard’s Country Airplay chart (dated April 18). The song gains by 5 percent to reach 44.7 mil-lion audience impressions, according to Nielsen Music.
Of the group’s 11 Country Airplay leaders, “Homegrown” is its seventh to tally multiple weeks on top. The band last logged repeat weeks at No. 1 with
“Goodbye in Her Eyes” (three weeks, 2013). Its best run at the summit: four weeks, with “Keep Me in Mind” (2011-12).
Country programmers say that the traditional bent of “Homegrown,” both lyrically and musically — the song might not have been out of place on an Alabama album in the ’90s, when the band was racking melodic hit after hit — is contributing to its success. Regardless, according to radio, it’s sim-ply a quality song. “I absolutely think this is one of their best singles,” says Brandon O’Brien, PD/music director of WUSH Norfolk, Va. The station has played “Homegrown” 424 times through April 5.
The track, from Zac Brown Band’s album Jekyll + Hyde, due April 28, is “way more traditional than most of what you hear on country radio,” muses Scott Donato, operations manager/PD of WGTY York, Pa. (350 plays to date). “For our market, that’s a much-needed segment of the format.”
Brian Michel, senior VP of programming for iHeart-Media and PD of WUBL Atlanta (694 plays), notes that while “Homegrown” fills the format’s middle between so-called “bro country” and balladry, “I think that its success stems from the fact that it’s a great record, hands down. It’s not about it being traditional or the antithesis of bro country as much as it is just an awe-some song. It has tempo, sounds amazing and is relat-able. What else do you want?”
Michel is also quick to admonish the negative connotations associated with bro country. “Can we quit talking about it as a bad thing? The only ones complaining about it are industry people and weblog critics. Listeners don’t care what bucket a song is in, only that it is a good song. And, last I checked, the summer of 2014 brought country’s best ratings ever, and that included a heavy dose of what critics call bro country.”
Other programmers echo Donato in that regardless of any potential bro country overload — and, as Michel notes, ratings clearly reinforce that radio is playing what listeners crave — “Homegrown” does contribute to a valu-able balance in playlist texture. “This is a great break from the bro stream,” says Bill Hagy, WXBQ Johnson City, Tenn., PD/music director (279 plays). Looking ahead to perhaps the Country Airplay chart’s next No. 1, he adds,
“At the other end of the spectrum is Sam Hunt ready to move into that No. 1 spot.” Hunt’s love song “Take Your Time” (MCA Nashville) pushes 4-2 with a 7 percent gain to 43.5 million.

Brown’s vocals really marry well
with Cornell’s,” says Kirby Ray, PD/music director of mainstream rock KCGQ Cape Girardeau, Mo. “In this area, listeners like hard rock and Southern rock, so they’re calling like mad for it ... We’re one of the few rock stations that could say, ‘Willie Nelson is kick-ass!,’ and listeners would love it.”

MUSIC NOTESTrace Adkins has signed with the BBR Music Group and is currently working on his 13th studio album with producer Mickey Jack Cones (Joe Nichols, Dustin Lynch). BBR will assign him to a label — Broken Bow, Stoney Creek or Red Bow – at a later date. In the meantime, Adkins tells Billboard he’s still approaching his music career the same way he tackled foot-ball: “I’m going to run down the field on the kickoff, and I’m going to knock somebody’s head off. When I can’t do that anymore, I’ll go home.”
Several significant on-screen develop-ments involve country artists. Billy Ray Cyrus plays an Elvis Presley impersonator known as Burnin’ Vernon in an upcoming CMT comedy, Still the King, produced by Hideout Pictures, the film and TV wing of Average Joes Entertainment. Kellie Pickler’s marriage to songwriter Kyle Ja-cobs (“More Than a Memory”) will be the subject of a CMT reality series, tentatively titled I Love Kellie Pickler, that debuts Sept. 18. And Sony Pictures Classics acquired the distribution rights to I Saw the Light, a Hank Williams biopic based on Colin Escott’s biography. Tom Hiddleston (The Avengers) will por-tray Williams.
As the Oak Ridge Boys prepare for their 2015 induction in the Country Music Hall of Fame, group member Joe Bonsall has a paperback book on the way. Harvest House publishes On the Road With the Oak Ridge Boys: Forty Years of Untold Stories and Adventures on May 1.
Warner Music Nashville is supplying music for Inc. magazine’s Grow Your Own Company Conference (GROWCO) April 7-9 in Nashville. Frankie Ballard, Dan + Shay, The Railers and Ryan Kinder are among the acts who’ll play at the event, which targets entrepreneurs and business leaders. Big Machine was the central music source at last year’s edition.

BULLETSl Awarded on Country Airplay to titles gaining audience or remaining flat from the previous week. A song will also receive a bullet if its percentage loss in audience does not exceed the percentage of monitored
station downtime for the format. Titles that decline in audience but increase in detections will also receive a bullet if the total audience erosion for the week does not exceed 3%. Bullets are awarded on Country Indicator to titles gaining plays or remaining flat from the previous week.
TIESOn Country Airplay, if two songs are tied in total audience, the song with the larger increase in audience is placed first. On Country Indicator, if two songs are tied in total plays, the song with the larger increase in plays is placed first.
RECURRENTSOn Country Airplay, descending titles below No. 10 in either audience or detections are moved to recurrent after 20
weeks, provided that they are not still gaining enough audience points to bullet or if they rank below No. 10 and post a third consecutive week of audience decline, regardless of total chart weeks. On Country Indicator, descending, non-bulleted titles below No. 10 are moved to recurrent after 20 weeks.
HOT SHOT DEBUTAwarded to the highest-ranking new entry on Country Airplay and Country Indicator, respectively.
MOST ADDEDThe total number of new adds officially reported to Billboard by each reporting station, or by an automatic-add threshold (seven plays for the first time in a chart tracking week, according to Nielsen BDS) for stations that do not report adds.
MOST INCREASED AUDIENCE/PLAYSMost Increased Audience on Country Airplay and Most Increased Plays on Country Indicator list the songs with the greatest week-to-week increases in total audience or plays, respectively.
AIRPOWERAwarded on Country Airplay to titles ranking inside top 20 in plays and audience rankings for the first time, with increases in both plays and audience.
BREAKERAwarded on Country Airplay to titles achieving airplay (at least one detection) at 60% of reporting stations for the first time.
