Successful country songwriters know how to embed their songs with just the right amount of repetition.
The performing rights organizations set the top of their 2020 winners’ lists to repeat as the ASCAP, BMI and SESAC country songwriter and publisher of the year awards all went to enti-ties who have pre-viously taken top ho n o r s . A shley Gorley (“Catch,” “Living”) hooked A S C A P ’s s o n g -writer medallion for the eighth time, a nd for t he sev-enth year in a row, when victors were unveiled Nov. 9. Ross Copperman (“What She Wants Tonight,” “L ove Someone”) swiped BMI’s songwriter title for the fourth time on Nov. 9. And Matt McGinn (“Home-sick,” “Cool Again”) picked up SESAC’s songwriter award for the second time in three years on Nov. 5.
Warner Chappell cinched two country publisher titles, taking the ASCAP honor for the eighth consecutive year and the BMI honor a third straight year. SMACKWorks claimed its second SESAC publisher award.
Additionally, Wyatt Durrette III repeated as the SESAC
song of the year victor for co-writing the Luke Combs hit “Even Though I’m Leaving.” Old Dominion’s “One Man Band” took the ASCAP country song trophy for three of the group’s mem-bers — Trevor Rosen, Brad Tursi and Matthew Ramsey, who previously earned the ASCAP songwriter-artist trophy in 2017
— plus songwriter J o s h O s b o rn e , who adds the title to two song of the y e a r w i n n e r s h e co-wrote with Sam Hunt: 2018 cham-pion “Body Like a B a c k R o a d ” a n d 2015 victor “Leave the Night On.”
Even Ben Bur-g e s s , w h o w o n his f irst-ever BMI award with “Whis-k e y G l a s s e s , ” cruised to the PRO’s
country song title while incorporating bold repetition into the “Whiskey” bridge: “Line ’em up, line ’em up, line ’em up, line ’em up/Knock ’em back, knock ’em back, knock ’em back, knock ’em back.”
However, the whiskey glasses are being lifted over virtual connections this year instead of at the traditional black-tie dinners, thanks to coronavirus-related precautions.

having a really, really hard deal,” says a circumspect McGinn. “It feels almost like I should feel guilty celebrating.”
The PROs still surprised the winners, though. McGinn was dragged to SESAC president/COO Kelli Turner’s house under a ruse that he needed to pick up a pie (“My girlfriend lied,” he deadpans), while others were lured into Zoom calls with cryptic warnings.
“We were told not to be in our underwear,” says Old Dominion’s Rosen with a laugh. “If they tell you you can’t be in your underwear, you probably won a major award.”
Joking aside, the victories carry some weight. Externally, fellow cre-ators recognize the achievement. In-ternally, writers often feel pressure to repeat.
“The minute I find out, I start pan-icking that I’m not doing enough for next year,” confesses Copperman.
“It’s a good reminder to celebrate things. I just find out the news and think, ‘Oh, my gosh, I have to go harder for next year.’ ”
The PROs’ country awards are historically handed out on successive nights in the run-up to the Country Music Association Awards, slated this year for Nov. 11. While there are no formal ceremonies in virus-plagued 2020, the achievements are still being celebrated with online videos and announcements. Music has been an important source of relief for many amidst the isolation of
the era, and the writers do not take that lightly.“I’ve always been such a fan of the power of music,”
notes Durrette. “I fell in love with its ability to connect people and heal people and make them feel not alone in their sadness or despair or happiness, for that mat-ter. It’s just the ultimate connector.”
Thus, even after all the repetition, Gorley continues to pursue the vocation with a passion, even respond-ing to a last-minute call to write at 10 p.m. with Lee Brice when he helped pen the recent No. 1 single “One of Them Girls.”
“It’s almost like a workout kind of energy,” says Gor-ley of his approach to the job. “It only has one gear for me. I can’t casually do it. So when we’re on it, we got a task at hand and we’re just kind of attacking it.”
Gorley’s success ratio is not the only reason he gets repeat business with many of Nashville’s songwriters and artists: He also brings an adaptability to the appointment.
“He’s really good at writing for the artist in the room and understanding what his needs are,” says Brett Young, who co-wrote his recent hit “Catch” with Gorley. “Aside from getting along really well, which helps a ton in a writer’s room, he knows me well enough now to know how to use his skill set, to really help me rise on my record.”
Not that the writing room is the only creative source. The opening line of “Whiskey Glasses” was inspired by a chorus that Burgess’ now-deceased fa-ther made up decades ago.
“He was a fireman, he was a first responder, and a singer-songwriter as well,” recalls Burgess. “He was always singing and coming up with little songs, and some of them were the most annoying things you’ve ever heard.”
The winning country songwriters, of course, aspire higher than annoyance. Burgess believes “Whiskey Glasses” succeeded because it was an honest assessment of heartbreak; Carly Pearce, whose “I Hope You’re Happy Now” was among ASCAP’s most-performed, sees her song in a similar light.
“Songs are vessels for truth, for making somebody feel comforted — no matter if it’s a good feeling or a bad feeling — to feel like you’re not alone,” she says. “To me, it’s my duty as a songwriter to write exactly what I go through in my truth because I know there’s somebody out there that needs to hear it.”
In the end, it’s the possibility of succeeding in that endeavor that leads coun-try songwriters to repeatedly hunker down in small rooms and craft 3-minute pieces of commercial art.
“It’s the one thing to me that never gets old,” says Old Dominion’s Tursi. “I wake up every day excited to do it again.”

BILLBOARD COUNTRY UPDATE NOVEMBER 9, 2020 | PAGE 4 OF 17
Russell Dickerson’s “Love You Like I Used To” (Triple Tigers) hops from No. 2 to No. 1 in its 36th week on Billboard’s Country Airplay chart to become his fourth leader in as many visits. The song gained by 9% to 34.4 million audience impressions in the week ending Nov. 8, according to Nielsen Music/MRC Data.
The track, which Dickerson wrote with Casey Brown and Parker Welling, is the first single from the artist’s sophomore studio LP, South-ern Symphony, due Dec. 4.
“I remember playing this song right after we had written it for my wife, Kailey, and some radio folks on the bus in Detroit,” Dickerson tells Bill-board. “When we saw the look on their faces, we knew this song was special. Now I can’t believe we all get to celebrate our fourth No. 1 together.”
The 33-year-old Dickerson, who hails from Union City, Tenn., follows his first three No. 1s: “Every Little Thing,” which led for a week in November 2019, in its 48th frame; “Blue Ta-coma,” which reigned for a week in October 2018 (32 weeks); and “Yours,” which reached the penthouse in January 2018 (39 weeks) for its first of two weeks on top.
Dickerson is the first artist to notch four prop-erly promoted, consecutive career-opening No. 1s on Country Airplay since Luke Combs, who is working on an active streak of nine. Combs contin-ued his run when “Lovin’ on You” (River House/Columbia Nashville) climbed 3-1 on the Sept. 5 chart for its first of four weeks on top. His latest, “Better To-gether,” rises 17-16 (13.2 million, up 17%).
Dickerson joins Combs as just the second soloist and fourth act overall to send at least four career-starting singles to No. 1 on the chart since it launched in Janu-ary 1990. Before Combs, duo Florida Georgia Line’s first four official singles ruled in 2012-14: “Cruise,” “Get Your Shine on,” “Round Here” and “Stay.”
Prior to FGL, another famous twosome, Brooks & Dunn, linked Country Airplay No. 1s with their first four singles in 1991-92: “Brand New Man,” “My Next Broken Heart,” “Neon Moon” and “Boot Scootin’ Boogie.”
The last comparable chart achievement for a soloist before Combs? Clint Black notched four Hot Country Songs leaders with his first four releases.
Having started his run in June 1989, just be-fore the Nielsen Music-based Country Airplay chart’s inception, he arrived with the chart-top-pers “Better Man,” “Killin’ Time,” “Nobody’s Home” and “Walkin’ Away,” through May 1990.
On the multimetric Hot Countr y Songs survey — which is now powered by airplay, streaming and sales data — Dickerson’s latest hits a new high of 8-6, also with 5.8 million U.S. streams and 1,000 downloads sold in the week ending Nov. 5.
‘BIG, BIG’ HIT Chris Lane notches his f ifth Country Airplay top 10 as “Big, Big, Plans” (Big Loud) leaps 11-6 in its 50th chart week. “Plans,” which he co-authored, increased by 24% to 25.2 million in audience during the tracking week.
The song follows Lane’s “I Don’t Know About You,” which became his second No. 1 on the sur-vey dated Oct. 5, 2019. He first led with “Fix” for a week in August 2016. He also boasts two
top 10s: “For Her” (No. 10, September 2017) and “Take Back Home Girl,” featuring Tori Kelly (No. 8, August 2018).
Lane’s latest is the seventh title to ascend to the Country Airplay top 10 in 50 weeks or more, with all having completed their trips since December 2017. Travis Denning’s “After a Few” set the mark by reaching the region in its 57th frame this April. In June, it hit No. 1 in its 65th week, wrapping the longest climb to the summit.
‘Used To’ No. 1: Russell Dickerson Scores Fourth Consecutive
BULLETSl Awarded on Country Airplay to titles gaining audience or remaining flat from the previous week. A song will also receive a bullet if its percentage loss in
audience does not exceed the percentage of monitored station downtime for the format. Titles that decline in audience but increase in detections will also receive a bullet if the total audience erosion for the week does not exceed 3%.
TIESOn Country Airplay, if two songs are tied in total audience, the song with the larger increase in audience is placed first.
RECURRENTSOn Country Airplay, descending titles below No. 10 in either audience or detections are moved to recurrent after 20 weeks, provided that they
are not still gaining enough audience points to bullet or if they rank below No. 10 and post a third consecutive week of (non-bulleted) audience decline, regardless of total chart weeks.
HOT SHOT DEBUTAwarded to the highest-ranking new entry on Country Airplay.
MOST ADDEDThe total number of new adds officially reported to Billboard by each reporting station, or by an automatic-add threshold (seven plays for the first time in a chart tracking week, according to Nielsen Music) for stations that do not report adds.
MOST INCREASED AUDIENCEMost Increased Audience on Country Airplay lists the songs with the greatest week-to-week increases in total audience.
AIRPOWERAwarded on Country Airplay to titles ranking inside top 20 in plays and audience rankings for the first time, with increases in both plays and audience.

BILLBOARD COUNTRY UPDATE NOVEMBER 9, 2020 | PAGE 9 OF 17
CMAs BATTLE COVID-19COVID-19 strikes again.
Just days ahead of the 54th annual Country Music Association Awards, positive coronavirus test results for two artists, Lee Brice and Florida Geor-gia Line’s Tyler Hubbard, left producers scrambling to revise the lineup for the show, set for Nov. 11 on ABC.
Brice and Hubbard appear to have mild cases, and both have indicated they are asymptomatic. Brice is isolating at home, while Hubbard is quarantining on his tour bus, parked in the driveway at his residence.
Charles Kelley will stand in for Brice as Carly Pearce’s duet partner on “I Hope You’re Happy Now.” It was not immediately clear how FGL’s scratched appearance will be filled.
Chris Stapleton was officially announced Nov. 9 as a performer, adding his name to other recently revealed performances by Jimmie Allen, Ingrid Andress, Morgan Wallen, Keith Urban and Dan + Shay with Justin Bieber.
The show is expected to pay homage to previous eras in the genre. Broth-ers Osborne, Jason Aldean, Dierks Bentley, Ashley McBryde and fiddler Jenee Fleenor will open with a tribute to the late Charlie Daniels. Little Big Town will pay homage to the deceased Kenny Rogers, and Jon Pardi tips an audio hat to the late Joe Diffie.
Additionally, Old Dominion is on board for a performance of Johnny Lee’s “Lookin’ for Love,” as the movie that spawned that signature hit, Urban Cow-boy, celebrates its 40th anniversary.
Co-hosts Reba McEntire and Darius Rucker are also said to be presenting a tribute performance, though details are not being announced.
Miranda Lambert is the leading nominee, with seven different entries on the final ballot.

It’s beginning to look a lot like face masks. The Oak Ridge Boys are moving forward with a 29-date holiday booking at Nashville’s Gaylord Opryland Resort, l a u n c h i n g N o v. 2 0 . Tickets to the Christmas i n Ten nessee d i n ner show are accompanied by specific instructions about the use of facial coverings. Meanwhile, a number of acts issued new seasonal singles. Original cuts include Dan + Shay’s “Take Me Home for Christmas,” Gary LeVox’s “Christmas Will be Different This Year” (with pianist Stephan Moccio), CJ Solar’s “The Only Present I Want” and Jerrod Niemann’s “White Christmas in the Sand” and “There’s No Need for Mistletoe.” More traditional releases include Jessie James Decker’s “Santa Claus Is Coming To Town,” Chrissie Metz’s “I’ll Be Home for Christmas” and Danielle Bradbery’s “O Holy Night.”
Who is Alex Trebek? That answer, in the form of a question, hit Jeopardy! fans hard when the longtime game-show host died Nov. 8 following a much-publicized battle with cancer. As a result, a couple of trivia questions related to a December 2019 soiree enter the cultural record books. “This singer-songwriter performed the former country hit ‘Crying’ at Alex Trebek’s last company Christmas party.” Answer: “Who is Don McLean?” “This Italian restaurant in Los Angeles that hosted Alex Trebek’s final company Christmas gathering was the site where actor Robert Blake’s wife was murdered.” Answer: “What is Vitello’s?”
The Bee Gees’ legacy is stayin’ alive, even in country and Americana, as Barry Gibb collaborates on a dozen tracks in Greenfields: The Gibb Brothers Songbook, Vol. 1, due Jan. 8, 2021. Among the Bee Gees songs that will be reinterpreted are “Lonely Days” with Little Big Town, “Too Much Heaven” with Brandi Carlile and “Words” with Dolly Parton. Other albums in the works include Manny Blu’s New Ink EP, Nov. 13; The Swon Brothers’ Nashlahoma, Nov. 20; Brit Taylor’s Real Me, Nov. 20; and Brian Calihan’s self-titled debut, Nov. 27.
Chase Rice is plotting a livestream concert on Nov. 15 to raise money for Coach to Cure MD, a charitable partner of the American Football Coaches Association dedicated to raising awareness of Duchenne muscular dystrophy. The event will take place here.

All data measures U.S. activity as of the week ending November 5, 2020. All units counts are rounded to the nearest thousand. Album consumption units — also known as albums plus TEA plus SEA — consists of album sales; track-equivalent album (TEA) sales whereby 10 tracks equal one consumption unit; and stream equivalent albums (SEA) whereby 1,250 paid and/or 3,750 ad-supported audio on-demand streams (OAD) equal one consumption unit. Nielsen Music/MRC Data has reprocessed year-to-date figures to account for a change in methodology, resulting in a restatement in streaming data from a provider, which has resulted in a shift in some previously reported data, most notably for video streams.

BILLBOARD COUNTRY UPDATE NOVEMBER 9, 2020 | PAGE 14 OF 17
Misery loves company. It’s an important part of Michael Ray’s new single, “Whiskey and Rain,”
though the protagonist never encounters another person in the course of the song.“The company part is that rain and that whiskey that’s helping him get
through it,” explains Ray.Misery, loneliness and alcohol are all classic elements of old-school country
songs, and they help “Whiskey and Rain” provide a musical salve for Ray, who spent much of the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic sheltering with family in Florida. He determined during those weeks that his career needed a shot of the traditional sound that had inspired his original pursuit of country, and “Whiskey” — particularly the winding guitar-and-keyboard lick in the intro — is a proper elixir.
“That makes me remember hearing Gary Allan for the first time, and Gary Stewart, and Buck Owens,” he says. “That beginning grabs you im-mediately, and the sway of that chorus, I just feel like it’s this good, two-stepping-feel song.”
“Whiskey and Rain” is the result of an old-school songwriting arrangement, too. Josh Thompson (“Drowns the Whiskey,” “One Margarita”) authored it roughly two years ago with Jesse Frasure (“Dirt On My Boots,” “Remember You Young”) at the Rhythm House publishing operation near Nashville’s fairgrounds. The room was less crowded than the typical 2020 co-write, and fewer people led to fewer doubts about the work.
“I find the smoothest writes are two-way writes,” observes Frasure. “You just go, ‘Do you like this?’ And they go, ‘Yeah.’ Then you move on. There’s not a third party going, ‘Well, what if we did this angle?’ ”
Frasure came to the appointment with a handful of musical ideas, and Thompson gravitated to a midtempo one with a curvy signature lick. The “Whiskey and Rain” phrase fit nicely with that musical hook, and they used it to launch the chorus, quickly following it with a “comin’ down, comin’ down” afterthought that became a secondary hook, though it filled up enough space that it threatened to create a breathing problem.
“Not a lot of gaps there,” concedes Frasure. The chorus carried out the liquid nature of the title, both the bourbon and
the weather helping to “wash away the past.” Pieces of the melody intertwined with the sig lick, then pulled away, then intertwined again. It represented an addictive musical dance, even if the guy in the song was forced to dance alone.
Once that stanza was completed, the writers backed up to the opening lines of the first verse, referencing a downpour on the tin roof and a Black Label brand to hint at the eventual title. And once they established the singer as the sole occupant of his honky-tonk living room, they inserted that important observation: Misery loves company.
“I just thought that was a cool line that basically summed up the whole thing — the company of the rain, the whiskey — and just kind of setting up that mood,” notes Frasure.
The second verse turned the protagonist’s pain into a hangover and ambled its way toward a repeat of the chorus. Before it was all over, they repurposed the “Misery loves company” line, bringing it out to set up a final down chorus, a subdued section that sets up the song’s conclusion.
Frasure tweaked the demo with a sibilant, ’80s-pop drum sound and light, flute-tinted piano chords, and Thompson delivered the vocal, confirming in the process that the “comin’ down, comin’ down” section was going to work.
“Some of the best writers in town can sell the hell out of a demo; you know, really get that emotion across,” says Frasure of Thompson’s performance. “As long as he can pull off a phrase, I know it’s singable.”
Frasure’s wife, Rhythm House vp Stevie Frasure, sent the demo to Morris Higham Management executive Buffy Cooper, who thought highly of it and passed it along to Ray. It was the first song he put on hold for his next album.
“It has the sad lyrics, obviously — this guy is going through heartbreak — but there’s kind of a light at the end of the tunnel,” says Ray. “We’ve all been in that position, and I think that’s kind of how this whole year has been, you know? It’s been sad, but we’re all trying to be hopeful.”
The pandemic — the most obviously painful part of 2020 — affected how “Whiskey and Rain” moved forward. Studios were closed in the early days of COVID-19 to prevent the virus’ spread, and producer Ross Copperman (Dierks Bentley, Gabby Barrett) had to remotely build the performance one or two tracks at a time. Drummer Nir Z and bassist Tony Lucido laid down the foundation together with Copperman listening in via Zoom. Copperman sewed in the keyboard parts himself and had guitarist Ilya Toshinsky add in his contributions on his own. Despite the isolation, the musicians were able to muster enough energy that the track sounds as if it were cut live.
“There’s definitely a magic that happens in the stu-dio when everyone’s together,” says Copperman. “But I feel like when you have a vision and you know how to attack a song, I think we nailed this one like that.”
Ray recorded his final vocals at the home of his tour manager, Luke Reyn-olds, who served as engineer while the artist cut five takes of “Whiskey and Rain” for Copperman to work with. Ray did extra advance preparation, ex-pecting that the alternative arrangement would present some obstacles.
“It is weird — hell, we’re singing in the damn front part of the house,” says Ray. “I didn’t see any of the band members when we recorded. So I just tried to focus and learn as much as I can on that song so when I go in, all I have to do is handle that lyric and really hear what we’re singing.”
Copperman contributed the background vocals, and as he developed mixes, Ray decided it needed a fiddle to increase its traditional country flavor. Jenee Fleenor did the honors, sneaking in after the two-minute mark and taking prominence at the down chorus.
“She was phenomenal,” says Copperman. “It sounded like perfection.”In the end, “Whiskey and Rain” blends several eras of country. Lucido’s
bass grooves like Ronnie Milsap’s 1981 crossover “(There’s) No Gettin’ Over Me.” The overall sound is as melodic and easy-going as a 1990s David Lee Murphy single. And the hooky signature lick stamps it in the same way that the instrumental riff IDs Billy Currington’s 2009 hit “Don’t.”
“If I had to play one song for somebody and go, ‘Hey, here’s t he representation of my record all on one song,’ it would be ‘Whiskey and Rain’ because there’s so many different inf luences that you’re going to hear in this album,” says Ray. “I feel like ‘Whiskey and Rain’ has elements of the ’80s, has elements of the ’70s, has elements of the ’90s. It really does bring it all together.”
“Whiskey and Rain” tied Luke Combs for the second-most-added single in conjunction with the Country Airplay chart dated Nov. 10, and lives on the Nov. 17 list at No. 58, making itself at home with 59 other current country titles.

On Nov. 10, 1990, Joe Diffie, then 31, topped Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart with his debut single, “Home.”
The song, penned by Fred Lehner and Andy Spooner, was released as the launch track from Diffie’s freshman album, A Thousand Winding Roads, which also yielded the No. 1 single “If the Devil Danced (In Empty Pockets)” in June 1991.
T h e Tu l s a , O k l a . - b o r n D i f f i e
became known for his unique blend of t rad it iona l cou nt r y mu sic a nd novelty-leaning lyrics. He scored five Hot Country Songs No. 1s among 17 top 10s in 35 appearances from 1990 to 2004.
Diffie, who died March 29 at age 61 due to complications from COVID-19, has inspired an array of country artists. In Chris Young’s 2019 hit “Raised on Countr y,” which rose to No. 10 on
Hot Country Songs, he sings, “Got my honky-tonk attitude from Joe Diffie; Daddy did, too.”
Jon Pardi will pay homage to Dif-f ie by play ing one of his hits du r-ing the 2020 Countr y Music Asso-ciation Awards on Nov. 11. Charlie Daniels and Kenny Rogers , bot h of whom also died this year, will be honored with performances as well. —JIM ASKER
