Country Goes West For Hall The Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum held its third annual All For The Hall guitar-pull fundraiser last Thursday night. After two years in New York City, this year’s event was held at Club Nokia L.A. Live in Los Angeles. Entertaining a few hundred LA music and media moguls were host Vince Gill, with Emmylou Harris, Melissa Etheridge and Dwight Yoakam. Chris Isaak and Michael McDonald also joined the festivities as surprise guests. “I grew up listening to country music, and it’s an honor to be here,” said Isaak as he opened the evening. “And this is the only place I can wear this suit,” he added before singing “You Hurt Me So.”Other sights and sounds from the night: Like all Hall of Fame and Museum events, the evening was at once entertainment and history lesson. In his opening remarks, Exec. Dir. Kyle Young chronicled Country’s West Coast roots through Buck Owens and Merle Haggard. Featured from the Hall’s archives was a 1966 clip of Buck singing “Act Naturally” on his TV show. Hall of Famer Cindy Walker was also featured in one of the first “Soundie” musical shorts ever recorded – her
CRB, CA Team For Industry Honors The Country Radio Broadcasters and Country Aircheck will team to present a newly created award celebrating excellence in Country radio and the Country music industry. The annual CRB-CA honors will be given during the CRS “New Faces of Country Music Show,” with the inaugural presentation of 28 trophies set for CRS 41 on February 26, 2010. “We are very excited to recognize the outstanding efforts of those individuals who excel in the Country radio and music industries,” says CRB President Becky Brenner. “Thanks to our new relationship with Country Aircheck, we feel there’s no better place to do that than at Country Radio Seminar.” Country Aircheck will co-present the awards with Brenner. “The New Faces Show is the culmination of an incomparably vital event that brings these two industries together on common ground,” CA Publisher/CEO Lon Helton says. “We can’t think of a better venue for marking their achievements and we’re proud to begin this partnership with Country Radio Broadcasters.” Twenty-one Country radio Awards will be presented in total. Station, GM, PD, MD and Personality awards will be presented in four market categories: Major (Markets 1-25), Large (26-50) Medium (51-100) and Small 101+). A Network/Syndicated Air Personality will also be honored.
Details are sketchy and there has been no official word from CBS Radio or KMLE/Phoenix, but Country Aircheck learned Monday evening that KMLE MD/middayer Gwen Foster and afternoon personality Jeff West were victims of budget cuts. We’ll have details and contact info as they become available.
And Hall For One: Thursday’s (10/1) All For The Hall event in Los Angeles was a who’s who of country fans and performers including Melissa Etheridge and actor James Denton. Pictured (l-r) are manager Ken Levitan, CAA’s Rod Essig, Michael McDonald, Chris Isaak, Vince Gill, Emmylou Harris, Dwight Yoakam, Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum’s Kyle Young and BMI’s Jody Williams.
My tunes: Music that shaped My Life
KYGO/Denver PD Joel Burke discusses his most important songs, artists or concerts:1. Ronnie Milsap, 1976, Carlsbad, NM: It was the first concert I ever attended, and realized as a teenager that country was pretty cool. I still have the concert ticket Ronnie signed for me after the show.2. Steve Miller Band/Fly Like An Eagle: The eagle is very symbolic for me. So, anytime I
hear this tune everything comes to a complete stop.3. Imperials, One More Song For You: A Christian album from the late 70’s, the music on the record sounded like songs I was hearing on Top 40 radio, yet had a message I needed to hear.4. Roy Orbison, the old Austin Opry House, 1985: The opening act was booed off stage. I’m not kidding! I had to go up onstage and say Roy will be playing in about 30 minutes. That was a frightful experience that I laugh about today.5. Kenny Loggins/This Is It: One of the greatest songs of all time! That song always lifts my spirits and keeps me pushing ahead every time I hear it.•An “important” piece of music you just don’t get: Nirvana. •An album you played or listened to incessantly: Off The Wall from Michael Jackson and the Eagles’ Greatest Hits.•One obscure or non-country song everyone should listen to right now: There are two: both are from country artists, but both were never hits. “Ocean” by Hanna McEuen. Close your eyes and listen to that song. You will feel like you are right there on the beach with the ocean breeze blowing in your face: an amazing piece of music. The other is “Southbound 35” by Pat Green. That has to be one of the best straight-up rock songs ever done!
Joel Burke
1941 rendition of “Seven Beers With The Wrong Man.” “He showed everybody how country music should twang, and no one does it better than Dwight Yoakam,” Young said when introducing Yoakam, whose offerings included “Buenas Noches From A Lonely Room (She Wore Red Dresses).” Expressing her love for Kris Kristofferson’s music, Etheridge incorporated “Me and Bobby McGee” and “Help Me Make It Through the Night” in her set. She also sang “You Can Sleep While I Drive,” a song she wrote that was also a country hit for Trisha Yearwood. Gill treated the crowd to a handful of new songs, dedicating “Bread and Water” to his late brother and singing “Threaten Me With Heaven,” which was written with wife Amy Grant. He and Harris showed that two voices may never have sounded better together when they sang “If I Needed You.” The evening drew down with McDonald noting the convergence of musical styles and singing a Cindy Walker song that was a hit for both Ray Charles and Eddy Arnold, “You Don’t Know Me.” And, finally, all the artists joined in to perform “Act Naturally.”

An Offer They Couldn’t Refuse: MCA and Gary Allan hosted more than a dozen radio and industry folks at one of the more unique showcases. Held on Francis Ford Coppola’s Rubicon Estate in Napa Valley, CA, guests were treated to a tour of the old Inglenook chateau, which now includes a small museum devoted to his films, and a rather extensive wine-tasting session. After dinner, Allan performed in a large room housing massive wine vats. He noted that the empty wooden casts were resonating at B flat, making the sound a bit of a challenge. Nevertheless, he was in rare and very relaxed form, starting off with his hits, including his current single “Today.” As the night wore on, he accommodated requests from early songs and album cuts – some of which he hadn’t sung in years, making for a truly special evening. Mallary Hope performed the previous night.
