MessageFROM THE PRESIDENT & EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Dear Friends,

Turning a new leaf with the changing season…At some point in our lives we’veall asked for some type of help. We usually turn to family and friends for thatsupport, but for many, there is no one to turn to for assistance except theSociety St. Vincent de Paul. Since 1908, the Los Angeles Council has beenproviding aid to the hungry, homeless, and working poor regardless of race, origin, religion or gender.

This year continued to be one of misfortune and struggle for many families inour service areas. A steady rise in unemployment, increasing homelessnessand a dramatic jump in the cost of the basic necessities of life pushed manyfamilies to the edge. The number of calls and home visits for emergency help in 2010 was more than theprevious years with 6,546 home visits. Volunteers worked 317,155 tireless hours throughout the year toreach out to the lonely and forgotten, to ease their burden in this time of isolation, fear and despair. We answered their many calls and brought hope and positive change to their lives. We fed the hungry, clothed the disadvantaged and low income individuals at our Thrift Stores, provided temporaryhousing to 136,258 people in our LA and Ventura shelters, subsidized close to 1,200 youth to enrich their livesat the Circle V Ranch summer camp, empowered prisoners through our support of the prisoner resettlementprogram and provided affordable housing in Los Angeles and Camarillo.

In this ever-changing world, we need to work towards expansion and revitalization to add new parishes andmembership to continue the foundation we have laid. Our core mission remains the same: to serve the poor withdignity and humility and offer hope and compassion to those most in need. Last year we were blessedwith many opportunities to help our brothers and sisters in crisis with nearly $3.3 million in dollars spentand in-kind assistance. Each time we are able to keep a family from homelessness or hunger, we renew their hopefor the future.

As Vincentians, your compassion for the less fortunate is obvious. With your on-going support, we continueto grow and ensure that the spirit of St. Vincent de Paul lives on into the future…one story at a time.

In the true spirit of St. Vincent and Blessed Frédéric Ozanam,

Claire Padama David FieldsCouncil President Executive Director

Close to 2,000 St. Vincent de Paul ‘Vincentian’ volunteersprovided more than 375,000 services, or acts ofkindness, to the homeless, the disadvantaged and theworking-poor last year. This included, but was notlimited to, food, household goods, rent, medical, dental, legal assistance, jobs, travel aid and home visits. Theoutreach benefitted people regardless of religion, race, gender or national origin in the counties of L.A.,Ventura and Santa Barbara.

A couple items of interest: More than 229,000 individualsreceived food valued close to $1.6 million - anincrease of $200,000 from the previous year - while$200,000 in rental and other forms of financialassistance were spent to help families from becominghomeless.

The Society's volunteers, from more than 100 Confer-ences, donated more than 317,000 hours of their owntime and over 752,000 miles on their personal vehiclesto make home visits to help improve the quality of lifefor those in need.

BRING CHANGE TO THE

LESS FORTUNATE

Disabled since the age of four, a 13-year-old boyrecently had major back surgery. Up to now, thechild had been sleeping on an old sofa bed that hadseen its best days. A hospital bed was needed, and fast. The boy’s mother, a single parentwith two other teenagers, was referred to a localSt. Vincent de Paul Conference where ‘Vincentian’volunteers visited her home. The Vincentianscontacted the Society’s store to see if a hospitalbed had been donated. Fortunately, a gently-usedbed had just come in. It was given to anddelivered free of charge to the boy. The hospitalbed now provides the comfort the child needsduring his difficult recovery.

The Circle V Ranch Camp program celebrates its 66thanniversary in 2011. Since 1945, thousands of youngboys and girls, ages 7-13, have been mentored, enjoyedpeer interaction, learned new life-skills and participatedin traditional camp activities in an environment wherehopes and dreams are instilled and encouraged. CircleV Ranch Camp hosts nine one-week sessions fromJune to August in a safe and structured environmentnear Santa Barbara in the mountains of Los PadresNational Forest overlooking Lake Cachuma. Lastyear, 99% of the children received camperships toattend Circle V Ranch.

CIRCLE V RANCH CAMP –WHERE TOMORROW

BEGINS TODAY

As a teenager and only child to blind parents, Adamfaced hurdles most people will never encounter.Though Adam had his sight, he struggled in schooland felt the pressure of the family’s financial strain.Adam read the mail daily to his parents and assumedmany household responsibilities. His outlet was histrumpet, which he bought by selling some of hisvideo games. Adam spent time as a camper and latera CILT (Camper-In-Leadership-Training) at theSociety’s Circle V Ranch. His presence helped hispeers with their self-esteem. Adam shared how hepersevered under trying times at home and assistedchildren who wanted to play the trumpet. The campstaff encouraged Adam, giving him a stage to releasehis talents and just have fun. This, in turn, gaveAdam confidence and hope for the future!

Since the mid-1950s, St. Vincent de Paul’s CardinalManning Center (CMC) has been a beacon of light forthousands of individuals. This Skid Row shelter houses75 men, four women and seven children each night atfull capacity, and hundreds more during various dayprograms. Close to 103,000 visits were seen last yearfrom people seeking help throughCMC’s drop-in programs, which included showers, a new computer learning center, counseling, support groups and other on-site services.

The CMC staff is now focusing on permanent housingsolutions to homelessness. Also, realizing that a lack offormal education and income can be a hindrance topermanent stability, Center staff is exploring newavenues of social enterprise to help develop skills and anincome base for homeless individuals.

Close to 1,200 shelter nights were provided in CMC’swomen and children’s program. The Society’s goal is tomove children and women off Skid Row and into afamily-friendly environment within the next three years.

CARDINAL MANNING

CENTER PROVIDES A

HELPING HAND

Case Statement:Jeremy, a regular at the Society’s CMC newcomputer learning center, informed a case managerthat he wanted to find his son, whom he hadn’t seenin 20 years. The case manager helped Jeremy locatea site on the computer where he could find hisson’s social listing. Jeremy anxiously visited the siteand began crying. He found his son. However,Jeremy was hesitant to contact his boy, as he didn’tknow what to say. His son was six years old the lasttime they saw each other. After a few weeks ofindecision, Jeremy created a Facebook profile withthe help of a CMC case manager. Shortly aftersending a message, the son wrote back, shockedthat his dad was seeking him. They tradedmessages for a week and eventually worked up totalking on the phone. The father and son are nowplanning a trip to see each other.

2009 – 2010 Annual Report

Sales generated through the Council of Los Angeles’thrift stores in L.A., Long Beach and Oxnard helpedfund St. Vincent de Paul’s charitable programs. Nearly250,000 people visited the stores last year, which con-tained usable donations picked up free of charge by theSociety’s 10 trucks. The value of donations collectedwas close to $2 million, while revenue through sales was$4.4 million.

In part, the stores benefitted shoppers on fixed incomes, sustained jobs for 90 employees in a challengingeconomy and helped close to 3,000 people throughthe Society’s Free Distribution program. Individuals -identified through home visits by our Conference-based‘Vincentian’ volunteers - received more than $127,000in household goods (increase of $9,000 from the prioryear) through this program.

TOUGH TIMES

When her roommate moved out, Janine and herunemployed pregnant sister were unable to paythe rent, forcing them to find a new apartment.Except for clothing and a futon bed, whichthey shared, they had nothing to call theirown. The two sisters found a small apartmentin Highland Park, but they didn’t have thefunds required to move in. The Society not onlyhelped finance their relocation but, throughits Free Distribution program, they received arefrigerator, a stove, a full bed, one couch anda chest of drawers. This assistance was madepossible thanks to donations the Society receivesfrom the general public throughout the year.
