DAY 1: Whitewater Rafting: Reventazón or Pacuare River (age dependent)

Your Trek Travel guides will meet you at the Hampton Inn & Suites (Hwy 1 Airport Blvd, Alajuela, Costa Rica 1017) at 6:00 AM on the first day of the trip. You’ll shuttle to Siquirres for your first “Tico”-style breakfast before driving to the banks of the Rio Pacuare. You’ll raft the Class II-IV rapids of the Pacuare with river guides, finishing with a Tico lunch at an indigenous site on the banks of the river and then a hike to a nearby waterfall where you can go for a swim and maybe catch a monkey or sloth in action. Later you’ll have a chance to relax and freshen up before being shuttled to our hotel further along the Caribbean Coast, where you’ll reconvene with your family and new friends for dinner as your guides fill you in on the details of the adventures to follow.

Play with monkeys, pet sloths, admire the wild cats, check out the size of the venomous snakes and more. You’ll hop back on your bikes for a ride to Playa Manzanillo, where a gourmet Trek Travel lunch awaits. Then, head out on a hike over mud-covered coconuts with mind-blowing views. DAY 3: Private Charter Plane: Limon to Arenal

Mountain Bike Basic Option: La Fortuna to Arenal Dam Approximately 11 miles

Boat Cruise across Lake Arenal

This morning you’ll bid farewell to the Caribbean in style as a private charter plane whisks you to the home of the Arenal Volcano. You’ll stop in La Fortuna for a lunch of your choice before riding toward Arenal Dam, a hydroelectric project run by the Costa Rican government which once provided electricity to the whole country. Enjoy breathtaking views dominated by the imposing (and sometimes active) Arenal Volcano in the distance. After the ride you’ll leave the bikes to hop on a boat and cruise across Lake Arenal toward your next hotel, nestled high in the Monteverde Cloud Forest. Tonight, adults will sip on cocktails and delight in a special dinner in town.

Hotel | El Establo | www.ElEstablo.com

DAY 4: Canopy Zipline & Tarzan Swing: Cloud Forest

Don Juan’s Coffee, Chocolate & Sugarcane Tasting & Tour

Mountain Bike: Monteverde Loop Approximately 5 miles

The sky is the limit today - with an adrenaline-filled Cloud Forest canopy tour on Costa Rica’s longest zipline, stretching 2 miles over the dense forest. After your zip-lining adventure, you’ll stop with your com-panions at “Sabor Tico,” our favorite locals spot for lunch, before heading off to learn and taste your way through a coffee, chocolate and sugarcane tour. You’ll then put that sugar-high energy into the bikes and explore the rugged beauty of Monterverde. Tonight, Mom and Dad have the night off to enjoy a date in the town while the kids enjoy a pool and pizza party with the guides.

DAY 5: Mountain Bike Basic Option: Las Rocas to Playa Garza Approximately 18 miles

Mountain Bike Short Option: Playa Samara to Playa Garza Approximately 10 miles

Tico Beach Cookout

Your destination today is Guanacaste, starting with a shuttle to our friend Adrian’s family-owned “soda”, Las Rocas, where you’ll grab a snack and change into cycling gear. You’ll pedal to the sea through small villages, and descend to the coast into Playa Garza, a small fishing village. You’ll then meet Pilo, a local fisherman, and his family who will host a beach cookout of just-caught fish and the freshest ceviche you’ll ever taste. While the children bodysurf, you can sit back in the hand-carved wooden lounge chairs made by Pilo and enjoy an ice cold Imperial beer or “pipa.” After, the cookout, you’ll head to the next hotel where you and your family can make the evening your own.

Hotel | Living Hotel | www.LivingHotelNosara.com

DAY 6: Optional Private/Group Surf Lessons: Playa Guiones

Optional Yoga: Playa Guiones

Optional Sunset Horseback Riding: Lush Jungle & Nosara’s Beaches

The day is yours and your family’s to enjoy and explore as you’d like. Choose to start your day with a private family surfing lesson at one of the most consistent and best ‘beach breaks’ a beginner could learn to “hang ten” at, or sign up for a family fun yoga class by one of Nosara’s renowned instructors. Explore the village of Playa Guiones and indulge in a well-deserved lunch from Beach Dog Cafe or Robin’s, to name a few favor-ites. This evening you’ll have the choice to get back in the saddle - but this time on horseback - as our friends from Playa Ponies guide you through lush jungle trails and along the river as you head to the pristine beach of your final destination, Playa Pelada, where we’ll convene with the group. Here, while the children admire the purple crabs that emerge in the night, you’ll celebrate the last night of your Costa Rican adventure at “La Luna”, the best beachfront restaurant in town.

Hotel | Living Hotel| www.LivingHotelNosara.com

DAY 7: Departure

This is your last day with newfound friends to enjoy your hotel’s specialty breakfast and take one more splash in the Pacific Ocean. You’ll say farewell to your guides at 8:00 AM at the Living Hotel. From here, you may extend your stay or return to San José via shuttle or flight. Trek Travel will provide one shuttle to the Nosara Airport at 8:00 AM and another shuttle to the village of Playa Guiones at 9:00 AM, or you can always continue your adventures on your own. We recommend a 45-minute flight from Nosara to San Jose on NatureAir at the cost of $90-180. Book far in advance as flights sell out and be sure to check the bag-gage restrictions. Please keep in mind, whatever adventure you choose, on your departure from Costa Rica, there is a $28 departure tax that must be paid at the airport prior to checkingin for your international flight.

DINING

Trek Travel scopes out unique and delicious dining locations, and we usually leave at least one meal

for you to explore on your own. If you have any special dietary preferences, be sure that you have

informed your Trek Travel Trip Consultant before you leave for your trip. We will do our best to

accommodate your dietary requests.

On our Costa Rica Family trip, lunches vary by region, and often feature “Tico” specialties with locally grown, seasonal produce. Dinner is a semi-casual affair with emphasis on local food, with some options for international cuisine. Trek Travel ensures there is something for kids’ palates, too.

HOW TO GET THEREFlights | We suggest that you arrive at least one day prior to the trip start, which will enable you to adjust to the time zone and minimize the risk of missing the trip start due to flight-related delays. We recommend that you fly into Juan Santamaria International Airport (SJO), which is located in the town of Alajuela. Taxis are readily available at the airport. Our meeting location, Hampton Inn & Suites, is just under a mile from the airport and offers a free shuttle if you choose to stay there an evening. Alternatively, a 20-minute ride takes you to downtown San José, costing around $12 USD, for those arriving early to explore.

At the trip’s end, we recommend booking a short flight from Nosara to the San Jose region to avoid a lengthy shuttle ride. The Nosara Airport is approximately 10 minutes from our trip end hotel and offers 2-3 daily flights to Juan Santamaria International Airport (SJO), ranging between $90-180. For those continuing on with internation travel, please allow adequate connection time. You will be required to re-check your baggage and clear security again. Also, please keep in mind, before departing Costa Rica, there is a $28 departure tax that must be paid at the airport prior to check-in, which can often add on an extra hour to your travels.

MEETING TIME AND LOCATIONHampton Inn & Suites | Alajuela, Costa Rica

Your Trek Travel guides will meet you at the Hampton Inn & Suites (Hwy 1 Airport Blvd, Alajuela, Costa Rica 1017) at 6:00 AM on the first day of the trip. You’ll transfer to Siquirres for your first “Tico” style breakfast before driving to the banks of the river. Here, you’ll meet your river guides and you’re off, paddling deep into the heart of one of Costa Rica’s most impressive primary rainforests. Please have your day bag including any essentials for rafting easily accessible, separate from your luggage and be dressed in rafting attire.

If you will be late for the pick-up or are going to miss it altogether, please inform your guides. You will receive an email a week before the trip start with their names and contact details. If you cannot reach them, please call our first hotel, Le Caméléon Hotel (+506 2272 7036), and leave a message with your expected arrival time and contact details. First, contact your Trek Travel guides to see what plan will work best. If you miss the rafting entirely, you will need to take a shuttle from Alajuela to the first night’s hotel in Cocles (Puerto Viejo). Interbus offers one-way travel for approximately $50 for the 5 hour trip (+506 40 31 0888).

DEPARTING TIME AND LOCATIONLiving Hotel | Nosara, Costa Rica

You will say farewell to your guides at 8:00 AM at the Living Hotel. From here, you may extend your stay

or return to San José via shuttle or flight. We recommend a 1.5 hour flight from Nosara on NatureAir at

a cost of $130-160. Book far in advance as flights sell out and be sure to check the baggage restrictions.

Please remember that before flying out of Costa Rica, you will need to pay a $26 departure tax.

ALAJUELADowntown Alajuela has a large daily indoor market, where you can find fresh produce and cheeses, a wide range of local products and various food stands with typical Tico foods. For a day tour, we recommend a visit to Poás Volcano National Park, an active volcano, whose summit reaches over 8,000 ft, and is a highly visited site, featuring plenty of trails and an extensive center for visitors. There are many guided tours offered, most last around 5 hours and cost between $40-60 per adult (children’s prices vary), transportation included. We recommend the following accommodations for your pre-trip hotel:

Pura Vida Hotel | Apdo. 1703 | +506 2430 2929 | www.PuraVidaHotel.com | ~$105

Once a coffee plantation, this hotel is now in a lush tropical garden, surrounded by coffee and sugarcane plantations. The restaurant features local organic foods prepared in a Costa Rican, French, and Asian fusion style.

Hotel Buena Vista | Apdo. 760-4050 | +506 2442 8595 | www.HotelBuenaVistaCR.com | ~$85

This Spanish Colonial-style resort features a 360 degree, panoramic view of Poás, Barva, and Irazú volcanoes.

Xandari Resort and Spa | Apdo 1485-4050 | +506 2443 2020 | www.Xandari.com | ~$230

22 individually designed villas on a 40-acre plantation overlooking the Central Valley. The restaurant serves fruit and vegetables from their organic greenhouse, orchard, and gardens.

PLAYA GUIONES, NOSARA

Playa Guiones is a gorgeous, four mile stretch of white sand known best for its consistent surf break and beautiful sunset. Time is counted in tides and rides, not minutes and hours. Even without the surf, families and other travelers here will be captivated by the tropical idyll - exotic butterflies and birds, howler monkeys, stunning sunsets and laser-bright constellations. At low tide you are able to walk the whole bay from north to south. If you head far enough south, you’ll find several large tide pools that make for excellent snorkeling and relaxing. Past those tide pools you will come upon Playa Rosada or Pink Beach, which is the area’s true gem, an amazing place to spend a few hours before the tide returns. To the far North end you will see Punta Pelada and the old Hotel Nosara, with its unique spire, no longer in business, but worth the walk to explore. In addition to the natural beauty and simplicity of Guiones, the village has many locally owned shops with handmade items and organic cafes to refuel the body and chat up the locals. We recommend the following accommodations for your post-trip hotel:

Living Hotel | Playa Guiones | +506 2682 5201 | www.LivingHotelNosara.com | ~$100

Looking for something more affordable, but with convenience and charm? Living Hotel may be just what you’re looking for. Nestled in the lush jungle of Nosara, Costa Rica, and centrally located and close to a variety of restaurants, social hot-spots for live music, surfing, yoga, a short walk to the beach. Choose to grab fresh juice from the Cafe and lounge by the pool or take a stroll to the beach, Living Hotel offers an ideal place for relaxing and resting, accessible to all that Nosara has to offer.

Harmony Hotel | Playa Guiones | +506 2682 4114 | www.HarmonyNosara.com | ~$300

Inspired by old school tropical destinations of eras that appreciated low key glamour and total escape, The Harmony Hotel opened in 2004. From the beginning, it has been a passion project for the owners—a couple who met surfing in Nosara—and all those involved in creating the lush, sustainable property where guests now mingle with hummingbirds and howler monkeys. Situated a stone’s throw from a pristine surf break on Playa Guiones, the Harmony is ideal for a surfing and beach adventure. But it is much more than that. With it’s juice bar, spa, yoga classes, pool and top restaruant, the Harmony as something to offer the entire family.

Harbor Reef Surf Resort | Playa Guiones | +506 2682 0733 | www.HarorReef.com | ~$125

Tucked away in the astounding beauty of the jungle, just footsteps to the sand and one of the world’s most beautiful and uncrowded beaches, Harbor Reef is the essence of “pura vida,” surpassing anything you can imagine in a vacation al paraiso; at a surprisingly reasonable price. Situated a stone’s throw from the pristine beach of Playa Guiones and only moments from the village, Harbor Reef is ideal for both a surfing and beach adventure or a tranquil experience spent relaxing in the hammocks sprinkled within the grounds.
