The past fifteen years have seen a major transformation in respect ofthe standards used to describe steels used widely in industry today;practically all relevant British standards have been declared obsoleteand have been replaced with European standards. An importantprinciple governing the relationship between European and nationalstandards, whether they be British, French or German etc, is thatadoption of the former is mandatory, albeit that a reasonabletransition period is allowed - usually 12 to 18 months. This meansthat once a European standard replacing an existing nationalstandard has been published, the latter is, within a short period oftime withdrawn and is no longer available from the nationalstandards body.

European standards are exactly what they say they are. Thus BS EN10025 contains exactly the same text in the body of the documentas does DIN EN 10025 in Germany, apart from the obvious use ofthe appropriate language; the contents of the tables are identical.

Euronorms and European standards are not one and the same. Inmany instances, Euronorms were transformed into correspondingEuropean standards, e.g. Eu 130 covering cold reduced formablegrades became EN 10130. (Euronorms were never widely used inthe UK).

A key characteristic of the way European standards are put togetheris that separate documents exist for, on the one hand, a descriptionof the products themselves, including a listing of the grades, or 'steelnames' as they are known, and on the other, the associateddimensional tolerances and other physical attributes, e.g. flatness,straightness, sectional properties etc.

A further feature is that there is an obligation on the relevanttechnical committees responsible for drawing up the standards toconduct reviews of their contents every five years or so. This meansthat since the whole process of European standards harmonisationstarted, some standards have already undergone very significantrevision, in some cases more than once. In terms of the productssold by Corus Service Centres, there have been two importantexamples of this since this booklet was last revised in 2004:

1. EN 10025 was one of the very earliest European standardscovering structural steels. It replaced, in large part BS 4360 in1990. The latest edition of this standard brings together anumber of types of structural steels - both flat rolled and longproducts, and in order to do this comprise six parts. It would beanticipated that for all but the most sophisticated direct millsupply situations, just parts 1 and 2 would be relevant to servicecentre activity, and that of their customers. (See also Section 2.1 following).

2. The standards covering hot dip galvanised products were alsoamongst the first to be published; cold forming grades in 1991(EN 10142) and structural grades in 1992 (EN 10147). Thesetwo standards have been subject to more change than most,culminating in a complete restructuring encompassing all hot dipcoated products - a pair of new product standards published in2004. Accordingly, following a transition period, these twostandards will be obsolete. The replacements are EN 10326covering structural steels, and EN 10327 covering steels suitablefor cold forming. To repeat, these two standards containtechnical delivery information relating to all the establishedmetallic hot dipped products currently on the market.

In this section, there have already been two references to 'steelnames'. As part of the important principle of Europeanharmonisation, sets of rules have been constructed to govern theway steel names are put together. These are set out in EN 10027-1:1992 and PD 6622:1998; the latter is a Published Documententitled 'Designation Systems for Steel - Additional Symbols', alsoreferred to as CR 10260.

The following points have been extracted from these documentswith the intention of providing an insight into the significance of theelements which go to make up the grades sold commonly by CorusService Centres. Key principles employed are:

1. There shall be one unique steel name for each steel.2. The symbols (letters and numbers) comprising the name shall be

written without any breaks.3. The complete designation of a steel product where quoted in

orders or similar contractual documents shall include, in additionto the steel name, a reference to the document which containsthe technical delivery conditions specified for the grade. Thus,EN 10025-2 S275JR is acceptable, whereas simply S275JR isnot.

Steel names are classified according either to their application andmechanical or physical properties (Group 1), or to their chemicalcomposition (Group 2). Within Group 1, there are eight sub groups,but within the context of the scope of this booklet, only two areencountered commonly.

Steel names - Group 1The two sub groups of significance in Group 1 are as follows:

Sub group 1

S = Structural steels

P = Steels for pressure purposes

L = Line pipe steels

E = Engineering steels

S275 and S355 are examples of this type.

Sub group 2D = flat products for cold forming, followed by one of the

following letters:

- C for cold rolled products,

- D for hot rolled products for direct cold forming, or

- X for products, the rolled condition of which is not specified.

These letters are followed in turn by two digits which characterisethe steel.

Examples of each of these are DC01, DD14 and DX53.

Widespread use is then made of additional symbols to describe theproduct in full. For the grades most likely to be encountered, the followingextracts from official publications are offered.

Additional symbols are divided into two groups; those relating tosteel, and those relating to ‘steel products’ which in the presentcontext essentially means coated products. The latter are separatedfrom preceding symbols by a plus sign (+). The first group is furthersub-divided in two - symbols in the first sub group can be used ontheir own, while those in the second sub group can be used only inconjunction with codes from the first sub group; this is illustratedreadily by reference to structural steels.

1.1 Structural steels

Group 1 additional symbols are:

1.2 Steels for pressure purposes

1.3 Flat products for cold forming

Only group 1 additional symbols apply in this case, but a wide rangeof symbols for ‘steel products’, i.e. coated products can apply as thefollowing demonstrates.

Additional symbols Additional symbolsfor steel: for steel products:

D = for hot dip coating +AS - aluminium silicon alloycoating (‘Aludip’)

EK = for conventional enamelling +AZ - aluminium zinc alloy(>50% Al ‘Aluzinc’)

ED = for direct-on enamelling +T - lead tin alloy (Terne)

+Z - zinc (galvanised)

+ZA - zinc aluminium alloy(>50% Zn ‘Galfan’)

+ZE - electrolytic zinc (‘Zintec’)

+ZF - hot dip zinc iron alloy(galvanneal)

+ZN - electrolytic zinc nickelalloy (‘Nizec’)

Steel names - Group 2The detail of Group 2 is more difficult to grasp, but it does containstainless steels, high speed tool steels and 'engineering bar'. Allthese sub groups are defined in terms of their chemical composition.In the steel service centre context, the remaining remarks areconfined to engineering bar, i.e. grades once covered by BS 970,and which now find near equivalents in EN 10083. Thus:

En3A is C22E which means 0.22% carbon average (i.e. carbon content multiplied by 100, and Esignifies a maximum sulphur content).

En14A is 28Mn6 which means 0.28% carbon average, with anaverage 1.5% manganese. (For manganese, a multiplier of x4 is used togenerate the code).

Notwithstanding the introduction of European standards, there aresome grades of steel which find widespread use in the UK, butwhich find no equivalent in Europe. To cater for this, there is to befound within the UK version of e.g. EN 10083-1 what is described asA non-conflicting national annex. The existence of this annex willnot last in perpetuity, but for the time being, it permits such gradesas 605M36 and 709M40 to remain in the catalogue.

Group 1 Group 2 additional symbols include: additional symbols are:

M = thermomechanically rolled H = high temperature

N = normalised, or normalised rolled L = low temperature

B = gas bottles R = room temperature

S = simple pressure vessels X = high and low temperature

Examples of the use of these symbols are provided by:

3.0 Certification

IntroductionIn the most recent editions of this stock range book, and for obviousgood reason much has been made of the transition from nationalspecifications to European standards. The distinction has beendrawn between product standards and tolerance standards. By wayof contrast, little has been made of the very considerable number ofEuropean standards which stand beside the two main groups, eachin a very important support role. Amongst these are those standardswhich define the procedures to be adopted for carrying out thevarious mechanical tests applied to confirm the product meets withthe ordered specification. Another such standard is the one whichgoverns the whole subject of certification. In the case of Europeanstandards this is EN 10204, which was first published in the UnitedKingdom in 1991 as BS EN 10204:1991 Metallic products - Types ofinspection documents.

DevelopmentsIn the intervening years, and in accordance with the existingrequirements to maintain the relevance of standards, reviews areconducted at intervals by the appropriate technical committees. Anissue of which due account has had to be taken is the emergencefrom Brussels of a number of directives targeted at specific marketsectors. Thus, as noted elsewhere in this book, EN 10025:2004addresses the issues raised by the EU Construction ProductsDirective. In the case of EN 10204:2004, a means is provided toconform with the Essential Requirements of the New ApproachDirective 97/23/EC of the European Parliament and the Council of29 May 1997 on the approximation of the laws of the MemberStates concerning pressure equipment.

The thinner gauges of hot rolled strip are produced on continuouswide strip mills. They are coiled up after rolling and when cold theyare cut up into sheets (< 3 mm) or plates (>/= 3 mm)

In terms of thickness, there is considerable overlap between theproducts of reversing mills and strip mills, but the latter benefits fromhaving the capability of rolling very much wider than a strip mill. Onthe other hand, the strip mill product is characterised by a bettersurface finish and improved control of thickness.

The range of materials available from a strip mill is almost limitless,but for general engineering applications and fabrication work, threeproducts are capable of meeting most common requirements:

EN 10111:1998 DD11 as HR4 ceases to be availableBS 1449-1.2:1991 HR4 - Drawing quality

EN 10025-2:2004 S275JR - Mild steel,Structural quality; guaranteed minimumyield stress: 275 MPa

EN 10025-2:2004 S355JR - HYS,Structural quality; guaranteed minimumyield stress: 355 MPa

While there is obvious flexibility in cutting up coils, certain standardsizes (mm) are commonly available:

The normal cut-off point for hot rolled products is around 1.5mmthick. Customers requiring thinner material should buy a coldreduced product. While this is more expensive it offers significantbenefits; the surface is far superior, as is the dimensional control,especially thickness. Nevertheless, in pure dimensional terms there isan area of overlap between hot rolled and cold reduced products ofapproximately 1.5mm, between about 1.5mm and 3.0mm.

However, it should be remembered that the strength of the coldreduced product will be significantly less than that of what appearsto be an equivalent hot rolled product.

Standard cold reduced products are manufactured to the Europeanstandard EN 10130, which replaced BS 1449.

General purpose ‘mild steel’ sheets to EN 10130, made to DC01 Am oiled, are available in a variety of standard sizes inthicknesses from 0.6 mm to 3.0 mm.

These standard sheet sizes (mm) are:

Standard thicknesses (mm), with corresponding mass per unit areavalues (kg/m2) are shown in the following table:

4.7 Mild steel hot dip galvanised sheets

A range of standard sizes of hot dip galvanised sheet is available,manufactured to EN 10327:2004. It should be noted BS 2989 andall versions of EN 10142 are obsolete. Thus the designations Z2 andFeP02G are also obsolete. Instead, reference should be made toDX51D+Z275-N-A-C. This is now the correct designation for theproduct which used to be known as Z2, with a 275 gram/metre2 zinccoating, including both surfaces exhibiting a spangle finish, whichhas been chromated to protect it from the formation of white rust.

It should be added that the availability of bright spangle galvanisedsheets is likely to diminish, as the switch to “minimised” spangle andsmooth continues. This is for environmental reasons; the spangle ispromoted by the addition of lead, or latterly antimony to the zincbath. Both elements are toxic.

Standard sheet sizes (mm) commonly available are:

Standard thicknesses (mm) with the corresponding mass per unitarea values (kg/m2) are shown in the table below. It should be notedthat in measuring the thickness of these products, it is the combinedthickness of steel substrate plus zinc which is quoted - not thesubstrate on its own.

2000 2500

Durbar is a non-slip raised pattern floor plate of integral manufacture,i.e. the pattern is rolled in - not welded. The studs are distributed togive maximum slip resistance from any angle whilst ensuring a freedraining surface.

The nominal gauge of Durbar is the thickness of the plain plateexclusive of pattern. The stud height varies with the plate dimensionsand grade, being typically within the overall range 1.5 - 2.2mm.

Durbar is available commonly in commercial quality material (HR15),as EN 10025-2 S275JR or as Lloyds Grade ‘A’, in thicknesses downto 3.0mm. Other qualities may be available, but for strongermaterials, the minimum thickness is 4.5mm. If it is intended to postgalvanise the product, this must be specified at the time of enquiryand order.

Celsius® SHS• Formed at normalising

temperature• High sectional properties• Fine grain structure• Uniform mechanical properties• Weldable in corner regions

• Higher compression capacity• Negligible residual stress• Tighter corner profile• Suitability for galvanising• Fire resistance capability• Proven dynamic performance

Celsius® hot finished structural hollow sections are produced in twostandard grades, Celsius® 275 and Celsius® 355, which fully complywith EN 10210 S275J2H and EN 10210 S355J2H respectively. Both grades have a Charpy impact minimum average energy of 27J at -20˚C.

All Celsius® hot finished structural hollow sections have an improvedcorner profile of 2T maximum.

Celsius® SHS SpecificationCorus Tubes manufactures its Celsius® SHS in accordance with theEuropean Standard for hot finished structural hollow sections EN10210, with the technical delivery requirements of EN 10210-1:1994and the dimensions and tolerances to EN 10210-2:1997 plus animproved corner profile of 2T maximum. Celsius® 275 and Celsius® 355 are supplied as standard to quality J2 making themsuitable for all internal and external applications to BS 5950-1:2000.

Celsius® hot finished structural hollow sections are produced byElectric Weld (EW) process in sizes up to and including 508mmoutside diameter, 400 x 400mm square and 500 x 300mmrectangular. Details of the regular and non regular production sizes,thickness and grades are shown on pages 58 and 59.

A range of Jumbo RHS up to 800 x 800 x 60 are also available asgiven on page 76.

Sizes, thicknesses and grades other than those shown in thispublication may be available on request.

Inspection and TestingCelsius® hot finished structural hollow sections are submitted tospecific inspection and testing, and supplied with an inspectioncertificate to EN 10204 type 3.1.B.

DesignationCelsius® hot finished structural hollow sections are designated bytheir outside dimensions and thickness in millimetres followed by theproduct standard† and the material grade.

Examples:(a) circular hollow section:

Celsius® 275 114.3 x 6.3 (b) rectangular hollow section:

Celsius® 355 100 x 50 x 5.0

Note †Due to the fact that steel designations are the same across differentproduct types it is essential, when specifying or ordering hot finishedhollow sections that all references should include the Celsius® brandname. Use of the grade reference (e.g 355) alone may result inproducts with lower structural capacity being used.
