The Intelligent Workplace Living Lab
& The Center for Building Performance and Diagnostics
The CBPD in the School of Architecture at Carnegie Mellon University works hand in hand with the Advanced Building Systems Integration Consortium (ABSIC) to undertake research, demonstration and policy activities driven to transform the built environment. The CBPD was the first NSF Industry- Industry University Cooperative Research Center dedicated to the building industry in the United States, and one of only
two in the history of the NSF IU/CRC.

Building Investment Decision Support tool
BIDS™ is a case-based cost-benefit analysis tool to support investments in advanced and innovative building systems that improve environmental quality, health and productivity in buildings. The CBPD continues to identify laboratory and field case studies demonstrating the relationship of high performance components, flexible infrastructures and systems integration to the range of economic, environmental and societal cost-benefit indices, with over 300 case studies in the tool by July 2007. http://cbpd.arc.cmu.edu/bids (password protected) and http://cbpd.arc.cmu.edu/ebids (public).

With the General Services Administration, the CBPD is completing before and after field evaluations of over 20 federal facilities nationwide, and the refinement of a POE toolkit that combines portable instrumentation with questionnaires and expert walkthrough to create robust baseline assessments of thermal, visual, acoustic, and air quality in the workplace. With GIS based data records, innovative data analysis tools from scatterplots to environmental “EKGs” for buildings, this toolkit and the GSA field studies are central to building the business case for high performance buildings.

Intelligent Workplace Energy Supply System (IWESS) & Smart Grids
The Intelligent Workplace Energy Supply System is an integrated set of technologies that merge renewable energies with energy cascades to provide power, cooling, heating, and ventilation for buildings. Graduate students and faculty evaluate, install, test, and evaluate technologies for integration in the Intelligent Workplace testbed, interfacing with the campus power, steam, and chilled water grids towards provide a healthy, productive, and comfortable environment for the occupants with 70% less primary energy.

The Building as Power Plant (BAPP)
The Building as Power Plant initiative integrates advanced energy-effective building technologies (ascending strategies) with innovative distributed energy generation systems (cascading strategies) to achieve zero carbon & net energy performance at the same time as individual productivity and health, organizational flexibility, and technological adaptability as an dynamic classroom, office and research laboratory building.
Through a series of workshops with leading professionals from around the world, the Center has developed design and engineering innovations for BAPP, and successfully written legislation and received over 2M in federal research funding towards a multi-university National Testbed effort.
