At Coronado Playhouse we believe in the transforming power of theatre. With this year’s classic play, Much Ado About Nothing, we encourage audiences of all ages to engage with the beauty and wit of Shakespeare’s language, and let these words and scenarios resonate with the similarities we still experience today.

This work is made possible by the generous support of our patrons, donors, sponsors and a grant from the City of Coronado. We operate on approximately 40% earned and 60% contributed revenues. Your contributions help

us positively impact the lives of more than 13,000 people annually and enhance the cultural well-being and vitality of our community and ensure we can offer classic works for the stage at low (and in this case “no”) cost to audiences.

Thank you for visiting Coronado Playhouse! If you enjoy today’s performance-and we hope you will-please consider becoming a member of our family by becoming a donor and a season subscriber.

Katy Skyrud, Managing Theatre Director

No matter the era in which we play his words, Shakespeare’s pieces are as indelible yet ethereal as the existence of time and space. They often require a marriage of true minds: between actors and their words, between movement and music, between logic and emotion. In Much Ado, we have a veritable game of marriages: Which ones will fail? Which ones will succeed?

Will wit undo one of the Bard’s most beloved couples? Will jealousy tear another couple apart?

We live these relationships every day: Brothers who cannot see eye to eye, former lovers who rekindle their passions, young lovers who relish in those same passions, parents and children, good friends, bad ones... It’s a testament to Shakespeare’s legacy that he understood these notions all too well, and recorded them in his works, creating

Art That Imitates Life. The setting is also familiar to many: A warm welcome for

soldiers returning from war, a backyard barbecue party for neighborhood friends, a stunning summer season shedding light on all we see. In truth, most of Shakespeare’s early works could only be done in the sun, which seems fitting.

The actors have all brought a kind of magic to this production, a magic that has been cultivated and honed for this particular purpose: To delight you, the audience, into a state of laughter at the foibles of these characters not unlike ourselves, a connection between the life of these characters and our own, and hopefulness - hope for friendships longlasting, hope for family unbreakable, and most of all, hope for love ever-prevailing.

Without love, the story remains untold, and the magic would not exist.

Kit Fugrad, Director
