The Canalside building in Wester Hailes will be the home of a new Connects service and will be used to offer a range of specialised day services to older people and people with dementia This is an exciting project as it will allow us to provide a vital service to the community while also being our first ever venture in the City of Edinburgh
Connects Canalside will support up to 22 people a day including weekends and evenings and provide services specifically for those aged 65 years and older Staff will work with people to identify what sort of activities they would like to do and provide this in small groups within a therapeutic environment
Cornerstonersquos first Centre of Excellence for older people and people with dementia
Activities will not be limited to within the building base and over time we will seek and develop relationships within local communities to provide a greater scope of services
All the services offered have the purpose of improving mental and physical health enhancing independence reducing carersrsquo stress and supporting people to maintain or improve their quality of life
The pictures above show the exterior of the building along with some of the current interior The ground floor where most of the services will be offered has 1797 sq ft of floor space spread across a lounge quiet room and activities room
Our Cornerstone Connects model was created to offer people with learning disabilities and complex needs the opportunity to learn new skills be active in the community and to enjoy a valued life Following on from its successful implementation in other parts of Scotland we have extended and developed the service to meet the needs of other communities

Andrea Brymer from the STV News Team presented Cornerstone with a cheque for pound2000 on the 14th of January to support the work of our Aberdeen Childrenrsquos Services
The STV Appeal is committed to making a difference in the lives of children and young people living in poverty in Scotland Across the country 220000 children live in poverty and figures from the Campaign to End Child Poverty show that in the city of Aberdeen itrsquos actually 181 of children Cornerstone is one of the projects the STV Appeal is supporting in the city of Aberdeen
We now support 105 children and young people across the region by providing assistance in family homes weekend and after-school fun clubs and holiday play schemes The money from STV will be used for transport for outings at our holiday play scheme in Aberdeen Because of the needs of the children who attend the play scheme we require a bus which can take a number of wheelchairs - something which is more expensive than standard coach hire This money will allow us to organise more trips to places which the children may never have visited before
STV supports Cornerstone Childrenrsquos Services
The winners of the CNR Innovation award at our Star Awards in September 2014 Connects Galashiels have been busy since their opening last spring Specialising in a range of activities including woodwork and cooking the service are generating a lot of attention for the fantastic creations being produced from a range of resources On a recent visit we were wowed by the 3D and mixed media art that was on show
The service are now working on growing their own resources and have begun revitalising a derelict garden that will hopefully be able to supply the service with a range of vegetables and herbs for their cookery classes

When word got out that our Aberdeen based IF group were holding a pop-up charity shop to help raise pound25000 for a minibus they soon found themselves inundated with donations
For a week between 9-13th March people we support along with volunteers from the community helped with the running of the pop-up charity shop in George Street Aberdeen The help was greatly needed and appreciated as hundreds of customers streamed through the store to support the fundraising and to grab a bargain Various products were on offer from clothing home entertainment cooking
utensils and a selection of clothes belonging to a well-known North-east voice coach to the stars
Methlick-born Yvie Burnett who works on the BBCrsquos The Voice donated trousers tops and dresses to support the shop The dresses generated a lot of attention and through sealed envelope bidding were given a new home to a generous individual who would like to remain anonymous
The pop-up shop managed to generate pound2135 towards the minibus fund - pushing the IF grouprsquos current total to over pound17500
To reach this point the group have run numerous other fundraising activities including coffee mornings sponsored walks fayres car boot sales as well as receiving generous donations
With the final total so near the group are getting really excited and are planning the next few fundraising activities Follow us on Facebook for updates on their fundraising events If you would like to support the IF grouprsquos fundraising please use the button above to make a donation

ldquoCome on Lap one over Two to gordquo My coach shouted from the side of the road When I hit the long hill for the second time around I cranked into it with everything I had Spectators rang cowbells and cheered loudly on the first corner up the hill I thought how nice it was of them to cheer so enthusiastically for a Brithellipbut then a wheel nudged alongside me quickly gaining ground My Swiss competitor powered on by Ah the cheers are for her I realised
As I watched her advance up the road towards the Italian I felt some of my strength disappear into the roadhellipinto the tarmac that she seemed to accelerate over so quickly lsquoHow can she be so strongrsquo I thought which soon distorted into lsquoHow am I so weakrsquo my negative thoughts stealing yet more power from my arms I kept pedaling hard or so I thought but I just couldnrsquot gain any ground The race result I was way off ndash the Swiss and Italian riders were up on the podium that day The
moment my mind switched into focusing on my own weakness the race was lost for me
ldquoYoursquore just tired from racing last weekendrdquo my coach coached me ldquoDonrsquot worry about it You know yoursquore strongrdquo I appreciated his positivity but despite his encouragement I was already slipping back into lsquolast yearrsquos attitudersquo The World Champion was a Goddess (she always looked immaculate in white lyrca no specks of oil not like me with grease stains everywhere) She was stronger than I could ever be I was just a tourist trying to break into this game that I was never really going to be any good at Irsquod trained hard and I still couldnrsquot pull out the results Who was I to think I could be a Paralympian
My big learning from that racehellip
lsquoYour thoughts create your attitude Pay attention to themrsquo
A sports psychologist asked our team what percentage of our performance we would assign to mental attitude versus physical form ldquo80 physical 20 mentalrdquo someone called out and for a while I wondered what the lsquoanswerrsquo was Apparently Ranulph Fiennes attributes his success in climbing Mount Everest at age 65 to being 90 positive mental attitude and 10 physical ability There is of course no right answer ndash it must be different for each of us and vary from day to day There is no doubt though that if we go into any situation thinking wersquore the lsquounderdogrsquo we probably will be Maintaining a positive mental attitude at all times is a vital ingredient of success Here is a short story from one of my races in 2011 the year I was hoping to qualify to represent GB at the Paralympics in London 2012
Getting in a good mental zone for performanceKaren Darke
Impossible
To keep a positive mental attitude I find it helpful to notice any repeating thoughts and consider lsquoIs this a useful thought to have or notrsquo and lsquoHow much control do I have over thisrsquo I try only to hold onto thoughts that are
Useful ndash the thought is helping in some way (many negative thoughts are helpful too if turned on their head)
Controllable ndash I drop the thoughts about things I have no influence over and focus on what I can do to improve or help a situation
No matter the cause of our success or failure in any given situation we generally have a strong need to understand and explain what is going on in our world We attribute reasons for the outcome and how we attribute our success or failure has a strong influence over how we behave next If we
believe the result is out of our control or due to some lsquoexternalrsquo factor then itrsquos harder mentally to do anything about it We disempower ourselves thinking like this
In 2014 I met an inspirational Spanish guy Jose Manuel Lopez who had just completed a race called lsquoImpossiblersquo (an ironman challenge everyday for a month That is 48km swim 180km cycle and 42km run every day) Hersquod then decided to carry on and see how many he could do in a year creating lsquoImpossible365rsquo He was aiming for 100 a World Record by a long way Not only that but he seemed quite normal and nice had a family and a full time job as a psychiatric nurse squeezing some charitable work helping homeless people into his spare time I felt so inspired that I agreed to join him for the last ironman challenge of his year In my lsquonegativersquo moments I wondered lsquohellipWhat was I thinking I rely on my
shoulders Could they take such abusersquo It turned out to be his 90th challenge I was intrigued to learn from him about what mental strategies he used to get through such an incredible feat
Somehow the idea grew arms and legs and led to the making of lsquoIMPOSSIBLErsquo a documentary about overcoming challenges that seem lsquoimpossiblersquo The film examines how we psychologically tackle apparently insurmountable challenges through the eyes of some renowned adventurers and athletes The backdrop to the film is the ironman challenge I undertook alongside Jose Manuelrsquos Guinness record-breaking effort This is punctuated with interviews and insights about motivation and resilience to keep going towards far-reaching goals with the Worldrsquos Greatest Living Explorer Ranulph Fiennes multiple World Ironman Champion Chrissie Wellington founder of Climbers Against Cancer John Ellison and respected sports psychiatrist Prof Steve Peters What a team to learn from
The film was launched at the Sheffield Adventure Film Festival on Friday 20th March 2015 and wersquore looking into ways to make it more widely available Irsquom sure it will hopefully give many more useful insights into getting into a good mental zone for making the lsquoimpossible possiblersquoMeanwhile here are a few quick tips that helped me through the ironman challenge (and other challenges in life )
GOOD LUCK (not that luck has anything to do with it itrsquos all in your head)

Cooking is just one of the many activities a role with Cornerstone can include
Canalside is one of two new Connects services being worked on in 2015 Our other new service is in West-Dunbartonshire andcan be read about on page 8
