Post-universitaire studiën in diverse buitenlandse laboratoria : Universiteit van Parijs (Prof. Gley), Universiteit van Lausannc (Prof. Arthus), Universiteit van

Wenen (Prof. Meyer), Universiteit van Londen (Prof. Starling) en als "advanced fellow of the Belgian­Amcrican Educational Foundation" aan Western Reserve Un.iversity, Cleveland, Ohio, U.S.A. (Prof. Wiggcrs). Voorzitter van de .,lntemational Union of Physiological Sciences" e11 van de "International Council ofPharmacologists". Voorzitter van het 20• Internationaal Kongres voor Fysiologie, Brussel 1956. Lid van de Kommissie van deskundigen van de Internationale Fannakopec van de W ercldorganisatie voor Gezondheid, en Lid van de Belgische Farmakopee­kommissie. Belast met de leiding van het J. F. Heymans-lnstituut voor Fannakadynamie der Rijksuniversiteit te Gent. Het wetenschappelijk onderzoek in dit Instituut is voomarnelijk gericht op de fysiologie en de farmakologie van de ademhaling, de bloedsomloop, de stof­wisseling en talrijke farmakologische problemen van diverse aard. Onder de voornaamste bijdragen tot de fysiologie en de farmakologie dienen vcrmeld : de ontdekking van de chemoreceptoren, gelegen in de vasculaire zones van de aorta en de sinus caroticus, evenals de bijdragen betreffende de reflck­torische regeling van de arteriële bloeddruk en de hypertensie. Een 700-tal publikatics betreffende deze talrijke problemen vcrschenen ge­durende de laatste 30 jaren. Een 70-tal Belgische studenten en afgestudeerden hebben wetenschappelijke navorsingen in het Instituut uitgevoerd. 36 van hen werden tot laureaat van de prijskamp voor Reisbeurzen der R egering of van de universitaire wedstrijden uitgeroepen. 12 van deze medewerkers werden tot geaggregeerde v:m het hoger onderwijs gepromoveerd. 11 van de huidige hoogleraren van de Faculteit Genceskunde van. de Rijksuniversiteit te Gent zijn oud-medewerkers van het Instituut, terwijl enkele anderen fungeren als professor aan andere Belgische universiteiten. Een 50-tal buitenlandse navorsers, uit verschillende landen en werelddelen deden hier eveneens wetenschappelijke onderzoekingen. Vcrscheidene van hen zijn thans professor in eigen land. De Nobelprijs voor Fysiologie en Geneeskunde werd in l939 aan Professor C. Heymans toegekend voor de ontdekking van de chemoreceptoren van de aorta en de sinus caroticus die op reflektorische wijze de ademhaling en de bloeds­omloop regden. Goormaghcigh. Norbert, Oscar, Jean. geboren te Oostende op 14 februari 1890, volbracht zijn middelbare studiën aan het Koninklijk Atheneurn in deze stad en zijn hogere aan de Universiteit te Gent. Hij promoveerde tot doctor in de genees-, hcd- en vcrloskunde op 18 juli 1913. Hij werd benoemd tot assistent bij de Verloskundige kliniek op 1 october 1913. Gedurende zijn hogere studiejaren deed hij reeds aan wetenschappelijk onder­zoek onder de leiding van Professor 0. Vander Stricht. Gedurende de oorlog 1914-18 en tot 1923 was hij werkzaam achtereen­volgens bij de Eerste Legerdivisie en de Militaire Hospitalen te Hoogstade en te Gene. Met de gegevens, verzameld gedu­rende deze periode, schreef hij een thesis over de pathologie der bijnier van de mens met dewelke hij de tird van ,.speciaal doctor in de patholo­gische anatomie" vcrwierf (31 mei 1922). Bij K.B. van 26 december 1922 werd hij rot docent aan de Rijksuniversi­teit benoemd met de volgende leer­opdracht : de pathologische anatomie en de macro- en microscopische demonstrnties in de pathologische anatomie. Hij werd benoemd tot buitengewoon .. hoogleraar bij K.B. van 19 januari 1929 en tot gewoon hoogleraar btj K.B. van 1 januari 1934. Hij was dekaan van de faculteit GCJ~ecsku~de gedurende het Academisch jaar 1935-36 en secretaris van de Acadcn~eraad m 1946-47. .. Bij besluit van de Regent van 19 augustus 1947 werd hij tot Rector v~n de Rijks­uruvcrsitcit aangesteld voor de jaren 1947-48, 1948-49, 1949-50. Ztjn rectorale redevoeringen waren gewijd aan problemen in vcrband met de voltooiing van het Academisch Ziekenhuis. Hij was Pro-rector gedurende het rectoraat van Professor Kluyskcns en opnieuw na het afsterven van deze Collega gedurende het rectora2t van Professor Gillis. ln deze hoedanigheid bleef hij aan de Beheercoounissie van het Universitair Vcrmogen verbonden.
