HOLIDAY WASTE BY THE NUMBERSThe holiday season generates a lot of waste, and many thingscontribute to this excess of trash this time of year. • Thousands of paper and plastic shopping bags end up in land-fills after the holiday season. Reusable cloth bags can limit theamount of bags tossed away, and users of plastic bags can re-cycle those bags at appropriate receptacles.• Four million tons of waste is attributed to shopping bags andwrapping paper. Recycling paper or looking for reusable items inwhich to wrap gifts can cut down on paper waste.• Approximately 33 million live trees are cut down and sold inNorth America each year for Christmas. If you use a live tree, besure to recycle it so it can be turned into mulch instead of beingsent to a landfill. Otherwise, consider buying a potted tree andplanting it after the holidays.• Nearly 2.65 billion Christmas cards are sold and exchangedeach year in the United States alone. This many cards can fill afootball field 10 stories high. One less card sent per person cansave roughly 50,000 cubic yards of paper. Electronic greetingsare another way to save paper.• If everyone in Canada wrapped just three gifts in reused paperor gift bags, it would save enough paper to cover 45,000 hockeyrinks.

HINTS FOR HOMEBUYERSHomebuyers, Beware Before Buying(NAPSI)—For many, finding and buying the right home is still a big partof the American dream. However, that dream home can turn into a nightmare when hiddencosts from weather and other types of damage start adding up.Itʼs not uncommon for consumers to find out about these hidden costsrather late in the process. Thatʼs because until now, buyers had to waituntil just before closing to receive a “sellerʼs disclosure.”This is a document that reveals details about the house the buyers planto purchase. At that point, itʼs likely that a prospective buyer has alreadypaid thousands of dollars for legal fees, inspections, deposits and titlefees and may be reluctant to back out of the deal.Fortunately, there is a resource that buyers can call on earlier in theprocess. Real estate tycoon and “Shark Tank” host Barbara Corcoransuggests going online to find property history and insurance claims ona home. An Insurance Claims report can give homebuyers and Realtorsinformation that was previously only available to homeowners. For instance, a company called Housefax offers online reports that pro-vide a comprehensive history of a home, including building permits;mortgage information; insurance claims; fire, flood, hail and cata-strophic history; and other residential property details. For more information, contact Housefax at www.housefax.com.

PREPARING YOUR CAR FOR ROUGH WEATHER AHEAD(NAPSI)—Your car can really take a beating from cold, wet weather, so it makes senseto take a few precautions.
These tips can help you prepare:
1. Take care of the outside: Check essential safety components such as your tires, head-lights and windshield wipers. Make sure tires are inflated to the correct pressure andhave enough tread, that your headlights are bright and that your wipers are in good work-ing condition.
2. Make sure you have the right tire: If you do most of your driving in moderate climates,all-season tires are a good bet for handling dry and wet conditions equally and offeringsome snow performance. For example, the MICHELIN Premier A/S tire with EverGripfeatures an evolving tread design and high-traction rubber compound to deliver excep-tional levels of wet grip, providing enhanced safety even as the tires wear down. If, how-ever, youʼll be driving where the temperatures are consistently below 44 degreesFahrenheit, you may want to consider switching to winter tires, such as the MICHELINX-Ice Xi3, to better manage ice and snow.
3. Take care of the inside: Test all the necessary equipment, including your heater anddefroster. Check and change, if necessary, all fluids, especially the antifreeze and washerfluid. A cold snap may also be a time your battery shows signs it needs replacing. Youcan get it checked, free, at many auto parts stores.
4. Have a winter-ready kit in the trunk: Be sure you know where your ice scraper or snowbrush can be found. Itʼs not a bad idea to have an extra set of gloves in the trunk, aswell as a shovel, ice melt and jumper cables. Consider adding snow chains to your kit.MICHELIN Easy Grip composite snow chains are a lighter alternative to traditional metalchains, with fibers that grip snow and steel clips that are capable of digging into ice.
Itʼs also worth it to get your tires and car checked by a professional to make sure every-thing is in working order. With a little preparation, you wonʼt get caught when the weatherturns.
