Slices are spaced as closely together as half a millimeter and extend the length of the whole core section. The 3D volume can be viewed using a software application that animates the result, sequentially showing each slice. Additionally, static images show two perpendicular views along the core axis and one that unwraps an outer view of the core. Log traces show the rock bulk density and effective atomic number, with each point representing one slice. Total and spectral gamma logs further characterize the core. X-ray information is acquired using a multislice, helical CT scanner that rapidly acquires a tomo grap hic imag e of the rock . Th e scans can be o btai ned whil e th e ro ck i s in side an a lumi num or plastic liner, offering a quick look at the condition of the core before it is removed from the protection of the liner. The scanner operates in dual-energy mode at two X-ray energies to solve for the bulk density and the effective atomic number, which provides mineralogical information about the sample. This information is combined with a core gamma log to define rock classes using TerraTek HRA heterogeneous rock analysis services.
