• At many universities publishing in a journal is a requirement for promotion and/or tenure. At Walden it helps promote the university and enhances credentials.

• For college and university administrators it is a way to contribute to the educational community.

• It can help when seeking a position elsewhere.

• You have worked very hard with your Walden students on KAMs and dissertations why not co-author

• Knowledge sharing.

Selectivity

Usually the selectivity of the journal counts for promotion as does numbers of articles published for tenure and/or promotion at many colleges and universities. At Walden it can demonstrate the quality of your research.

The lower the percentage published vs. what is received the more selective the journal

• Refereed = Reviewed by one or more reviewers either anonymously or not anonymously.

• Not Refereed = Usually up to the editor to decide whether to publish.

• Anonymous Review = Reviewers review without the name of the author (s) known.

Writing

• Pick your topic carefully making sure it fits with the journal

• Name of the manuscript should be descriptive of the contents

• Take the time to write a good abstract (it hooks the editory/reviewers)

• Think about a co-author (s)

• Give your manuscript to a trusted other for review and comment

• Write and re-write (make it perfect)

• Check grammar and spelling

• Use the APA manual

• Make it as easy as possible for the editor!

• Submit the manuscript in the format requested, I repeat…• Submit the manuscript in the format requested

• Make sure your cover sheet has your contact information unless stated otherwise

• Return all requested information to the editor pronto

• Information sheet

• Copywrite transfer

• Respond to all inquiries for clarification promptly

• Copywrite Transfer – Transfers right of the article to the publisher but the author has the right to use the article as a stand alone.

The editor will review your manuscript

• Appropriate for the Journal?

• Read the abstract

• Cursory look at adherence to style

• Look at reference list (How dated)

• Accept for review or reject

Do not be offended if the editor rejects your manuscript pending you doing something before it is accepted for review

After Submission

The author should

• Respond within a reasonable time to editor requests

• Be patient since reviews take time

• If the manuscript review is past the time specified contact the editor

Do not be surprised if you never hear from the journal again.

If rejected

• Heed the remarks of the reviewers

• Sometimes you will not receive any reviewer comments

• Do not take it personally, the reviewers do not know you if it was an anonymous review

• Do not complain to the editor ….. No whining

• If at all possible, make corrections and submit to another journal

• Persevere
