Nows the time to set amorning routineIts 9 a.m. Where are the
kids? Are they still sleepingafter yet another wonderfullate summer bedtime? Or
are they up but taking theirtime dressing and eating? Its a typical lazy summermorning. Isnt it wonderful?
But all too soon school willbe back in session and thekids need to be up, dressed, organized and out of thehouse in the early morning. If you want your mornings
to be relatively stress free, you will need to start think-ing about the school sched-ule about a week before thefirst day of school. Workingthe family back to earlierbedtimes is a process and justwont happen in one night.First, think how much
sleep your child needs. Ifhe has been staying up lateand then just sleeping untilhe awakens, how manyhours does he usually sleep? Now you know how muchhe needs. This may havechanged over the summerbecause he could be matur-ing and need a bit less sleepor the opposite can happen ifhes in a major growth spurt. The trickier question is
what time he needs to get upin the morning. How longdoes it take him to get out ofbed, fed and dressed? Somekids are very slow and needextra time, so take that intoconsideration. So now you have your
goals. You have determined abedtime and a wake-up time.Start by talking to the kids
and explaining the need to
set a bedtime. Make it a pro-cess, backing up the time inincrements. Its a good ideato arrange for some exerciseduring the afternoon so thatthe kids just may be tired abit earlier.Getting them up is another
challenge. They are used tololling about, so being toldto get up and get moving willnot be greeted with joy. Soplan a morning activity sothat there is actually a reasonto get out of bed. Haventmade it to Science World yetthis summer? This is a greatopportunity. If the kids loveshopping for back-to-school,make it a morning outing, maybe followed by lunch.By the first day of school
your kids will be on schedule.Children function best
when there is a routine.Even teens, who are particu-larly grumpy in the morning, benefit from a plan. As a mat-ter of fact, the more you hate
mornings, no matter whatyour age, the easier it can bewith a plan. Then you cansimply sleepwalk throughthe steps and at the end of itwalk out the door ready toface the day. There is no right routine,
only the one that works bestfor you. Many families find that
doing some preparation inthe evening is a lifesaver.Have breakfast ready to go,cereal and bowls on thetable, coffee ready at theflick of a switch, and juiceready to pour. The same works with
lunch. Having all the ingredi-ents ready to be put togetherfor lunch beats staring at thefridge trying to figure outwhat to prepare. School-agekids can make their ownlunch with some guidelinesabout the variety of foodsthey need. You can lay out clothing
the night before and havebackpacks filled and waitingat the door.Get yourself up a bit ear-
lier. Shower and dress inquiet and comfort before the
children are out of bed. Thefew minutes of lost sleep areworth it. You may even get tohave your coffee before youleave for work.Leave the TV turned off.Kids do not need to watch
TV before they head toschool. Its distracting andcauses them to want to sitand watch rather than getready for the day. I haveheard of some families whoplay rousing music in themorning to get everyonegoing. There are lots of little ways
to make mornings work foryou. Think about your fam-ily, think about the morningmoments that are pure helland then plan to avoid thosemoments. Involve the wholefamily in the plan and be pre-pared to make adjustments inthe first weeks of school. It wont be perfect. But,
you can decide that you aregoing to arrive at work in agood mood, ready to work, and your children are like-wise going to head to schoolin a good mood, ready tolearn.

Tips to avoid fraudulent online lendersThe Better Business Bureau
(BBB) serving MainlandBritish Columbia is caution-ing consumers to be carefulwhen using online lenders.BBB advises consumers to
research a company or web-sites reputation and read allthe fine print before givingyour personal information orsigning any agreements.Over the past three years,
BBB has received more than1,140 complaints acrossNorth America against onlinelenders. Many of those com-plaints allege fraud, includ-ing companies initiatingloans or withdrawing moneywithout permission, or call-ing to collect a debt thatwas never owed. Other com-plaints allege poor customerservice or unscrupulous col-lection tactics.BBB examined several
B.C.-based websites thatappeared to target Americancitizens for short-term orpayday loans of about $500.Two Vancouver-based com-
panies, Atlasmoneyonline.com, operated by First WestCoast Financial Services, and Easycashonlinestore.com, operated by CamosunFinancial, are owned by aMatthew Vickers. Both companies have F rat-
ings with the BBB for failureto respond to complaintsand U.S. government actionsagainst both companies. The BBB attempted to con-
tact both companies, but themail was returned.Complainants who have
filed with the BBB allege thatthe Atlasmoneyonline.comand Easycashonlinestore.com have over-billed theirbank accounts for more thanthe original amount due toan issue with the companysautomatic billing practices.Additionally, one
consumer alleges thatAtlasmoneyonline.com isaggressively pursuing collec-tions with them despite nothaving contacted the com-pany previously.Atlasmoneyonline.com had
a government action in theState of New Hampshire lastyear that stated the companymust pay a $10,000 admin-istrative fine to the State ofNew Hampshire BankingDepartment and $2,370 inconsumer restitution due totheir lending practices.Easycashonlinestore.com
was also found to be in viola-tion of California state lawand its payday lending trans-actions involving Californianresidents to be voided.BBB contacted the call
centre linked to both com-panies and verified that thecall centre answers callsfor seven payday lendingwebsites which all offer thesame rates and conditions forclients, but the call centre repwould not divulge the othernames of the websites.BBB found out that Vickers
also owns Coldcashtoday.com., which appears to bean inactive website and
MyQuikLoan.com.BBB attempted to contact
Vickers, but BBB received noresponse to both letters ande-mails sent. For those considering an
online payday lender, BBBoffers the following tips:Start with trust. Check
out the companys BBBBusiness Review to see itsrating, history of complaints
and other information andnever pay an up-front fee.Limit the amount you
borrow. Only borrow whatyou know you can pay offwith your first paycheck. Most companies will allowyou to rollover the balancefor weeks or months, buttack on fees the whole time. Know your rights. Is the
loan you are considering a
payday loan? Payday loansare small, short-term loans of$1,500 or less that must berepaid within 62 days. Thereare laws in B.C. regulatingthe payday lending industry, which is administered byConsumer Protection BC. Tosubmit a complaint, find alicensed payday lender or formore information, log on towww.paydayloanrightsbc.ca.
Read the fine print. Payclose attention to fees andconsequences of non-pay-ment. If you provide an assetas security like a car, whathappens to the asset if you donot pay? Keep your documenta-
tion. Many consumers saidthey started receiving callsfrom collections agenciesyears after they paid off a
payday loan. Some of thesecalls were simple errors;others were attempts to col-lect a debt that is not owed.Protect yourself by having
documentation that all loanswere paid in full. Know where to turn. If
you feel a lender has com-mitted fraud or taken advan-tage, file a complaint withBBB at www.mbc.bbb.org.

mon, it is easy to forget thatthese devices and their char-gers may create fire hazards. On June 8, a house fire
in North Grenville, Ont.involved a malfunctioningbattery charger that over-heated and caused over$200,000 in damage.A $450,000 house fire
in Kingston, Ont. in Marchresulted from using a batterycharger with the wrong kindof battery.A battery fire could hap-
pen if a device with a defect-ive battery is left unattendedand it overheats, said JackSmith, president of theCanada Safety Council, in apress release. Also, wireless devices
should be kept away fromanything that could catchfire, like a bed, pillows, orpapers. To safeguard your home
and personal safety, theCanada Safety Council hasthe following recommen-dations for the usage ofrechargeable batteries andbattery chargers. Locate your battery
recharging station in a safearea, such as a tabletop clearof any other objects nevernear anything flammable. Becareful not to overload anypower bars or outlets. Whenever possible,
recharge batteries while youare present in the home.Have a working smoke
detector in the room wherethe batteries are beingrecharged, and make sure afire extinguisher is nearby ifneeded. Shut off battery-powered
devices, such as laptops andtablet computers, when theyare not in use. Do not leave laptops,
tablets, cellphones or simi-lar devices unattended oncouches or beds, or in otherareas where they may over-heat and come into contactwith potentially flammable
materials. Ensure good aircirculation around devices atall times. Make a habit of remov-
ing old batteries from yourhome at least once or twice ayear. Check with your muni-cipality for hazardous wastecollection sites, or drop-offsites at retail stores. Check for battery
recalls on Health CanadasConsumer Products Safetywebsite, located at http://www.hc-sc.gc.ca/cps-spc/advisories-avis/index-eng.php Never put non-recharge-
able batteries in a batterycharger. Recharge recharge-able batteries using the cor-rect charger. When recharging batter-
ies, do not mix brands of bat-teries. For example, rechargeDuracell batteries togetherin one batch, and Energizerbatteries in another. Donot recharge Duracell andEnergizer batteries together. In your devices, do not
mix rechargeable and dispos-able batteries.
