The main objeaive of 0re study was to determine the artificial substrate preference for
macroinvertebrate colonization and its relationship with the water quality in the Chao
from January to July 2002. Benthics were collected in baskeb separately filled with
ceramic, foam, PVC and stone. The colonized benthics were collected monthly
identified. The pH, temperature, velocity, fansparency, turbidity, dissolved oxygen @O),
oxygen demand (BOD), nitrate, total phosphorus (TP), depth and salinity were collected weekly
determined. Data analysis was caried out by using the Spearman's rank Correlation.
Most water quality samples met the class 3 of the water quality standard except for DO,
nitrate in some months. The level of salinity was not observed firoughout this study. Three phyla
macroinvertebrates: Annelid4 Arthropoda and Mollusca comprised 8 classes, l8 orden, and 39
The to● I nttber ofindividuals ofbenthic macro抽 ertebrates was 43,716 individuals/m〕.The
density and taxa richness of benthic macroinvertebrates were both found in the 4d month (April
May) and the lowest density and taxa richness were both found in the l"' month (January-February).
highest and lowest density and taxa richness were 8,300, 5551 ind/m2 and 26, 17 respectively. The
divers, indeX Of benthL macrOinvertebrates was 146 in the 6・ month cune‐Jul,and
was 0.91 in the l" month. PVC strowed th€ highest efficient substrate in terms of density
(29,5214 ind/m) and stone showed the highest efficient substrate in terms of taxa
and divenity index (1.39). Gammaridae was a dominant familn with a density of 14,885
and followed by 10,064 ind/m203.020/Op of Hymenosomidae. Both of them were
on PVC
From the statistical analysis,山 e detennination of the signincant relationship between
and water quality found that Gammaridae had a positive corelation with turbidity
