Creating Multiple Streams of Income From Your Laptop, Tablet or Smart Phone

This month I’ve got something I think you’re going to love as it has huge potential to generate money quickly. And I shall start off by asking you this seemingly odd question:-

“WHAT HAVE A GROUP OF NUNS, A HOMELESS GUY AND THE LADY OWNER OF A CAKE SHOP GOT IN COMMON?”

No?

Well they have all received money online using something known as Crowd Funding – the relatively new online explosion in raising money that has taken the web by storm (more on those Nuns in a moment).

Originally a form of fundraising site for charitable and ‘good works’ – online crowd funding now enables you to raise money for your own projects – people have raised hundreds of thousands from this. The principal is simple:

Hello once more,

and another warm welcome to your latest edition of the Copy These ideas Newsletter.

Raise Money Through Small Contributions From A Large Number Of People

That might not mean too much to you yet and/or you might not realise how you can use it right now, but by the time you’ve finished this newsletter I think you’re going to get excited.

Allow me to explain. If you wanted to raise money from a ‘crowd’, up until recently just about your only option would have been to literally go to a crowded place and either beg with your hat held out or act out some street performance.

Street performers in places such as Covent Garden for years have had this down to a fine art – whipping up a crowd – getting them excited and then passing the hat around to get the crowd to essentially pay them for their entertainment.

Street comedians, juggling unicyclists, magicians, guys doing weird things with chain saws – whatever – all these street performers are working on the principal that if they just get a little bit of money from each member of a large crowd, and they do it several times, they can make a fair bit of money without really working too hard for it.

Charities have basically been using this same principle for a very long time. Wherever there’s a crowd you’ll find someone with a charity tin shaking it in front of you hoping you’ll give them a few pence.

And the point?

BECAUSE NOW IT’S POSSIBLE TO DO THE SAME WITHOUT EVEN LEAVING HOME…

Only you’ll be raising money for your own project or idea. Thanks to the internet you can set up a Crowdfunding Page easily on one of the many Specialist Crowdfunding Sites which now exist online and pull in the cash.

For example, when a homeless guy was spotted helping people push their cars out of snow, someone videoed this Good Samaritan and vowed to help him back. That video was posted online on one of these specialist sites and a crowdfunding appeal was launched.

Page 5: COPY THESE IDEAS - Andrew · PDF fileMARCH 2015 EDITION 3 THE COPY THESE IDEAS NEWSLETTER MARCH 2015 EDITION Creating Multiple Streams of Income From Your Laptop, Tablet or Smart Phone

MARCH 2015 EDITION 5

The result was that the homeless guy’s one simple act of helping others which was captured on video ended up going viral and so far over $23,000 has been raised.

Now it’s not millions of pounds of course but $23,000 to a homeless man must feel like he’s just won the lottery.

The person who videoed his act of kindness and posted it on one of those crowd funding sites originally set out to raise $7,500 for the homeless guy, but as word spread more and more people simply dipped their hands in their pockets and donated, resulting in them more than tripling the original target.

HERE’S SOME MORE EXAMPLES…

You may have seen on the News in the UK recently that a disabled man who was attacked outside his home in the North East, was helped when a member of the public, who he’d never met, decided to launch a crowdfunding project to raise money for him.

So far over £330,125 has been raised from this simple site.

When student Jiwon Lee went missing from her University in Columbia, last year, her brother set up a crowdfunding page to raise money to hire a private detective to help find her. He raised over $89,000.

OK, so I’m sure you can see how using these crowdfunding websites can help raise money and create awareness for good causes and to help people with emergency situations…

BUT YOU ARE PROBABLY WONDERING HOW’S THIS GOING TO HELP ME?

Well it can help you because these crowd funding sites are not simply used to raise awareness and generate donations for good causes, but they are being used to raise money by anyone who wants to, for their idea/business/project.

And it’s proving a very, very lucrative source of finance.

When Steve Smith decided to launch an online estate agency, designed to side-step the “exorbitant” fees charged by offline estate agents - essentially by charging a 0% rate of commission for properties listed on the site, with a fixed fee regardless of property size or value – he turned to crowd funding to raise money for the start up.

MARCH 2015 EDITION 7

From his original idea to give away 5% of his new business in return for £250,000 – he very

quickly beat that goal, raising £499,250 from 195 backers. Almost doubling his crowdfunding target.

When start up online community, Escape the City, went looking for cash they shunned the more traditional routes of venture capital and turned to crowd funding.

Starting out as a little side project in 2009, by 2012 the online community ‘for professionals looking to escape the corporate world’ had proved itself as a concept and was needing cash to fulfil its potential.

Crowdfunding pulled them in £600,000! When Derek Lamberton wanted to pull in cash for his small business, which creates city guides and maps – with titles such as ‘London’s best coffee’, ‘London’s Best Cocktail bars’ etc - to allow it to expand its range of products, he turned to crowdfunding website:-

www.seedrs.comHe raised over £58,000.

When Rob Hall had an idea for a mobile app that would offer last minute deals on restaurants, bars etc – with future possibilities in last minute offers for such things as hot air balloon rides, theatre seats and all manner of other last minute offer opportunities - he ran a small test

in the Bristol area which generated just £4,276 in revenues. But using crowdfunding to get

investment in his business, he managed to raise £156,574 from 196 investors.

Tom Ball came up with an idea for offering simple desk and meeting space rentals in various locations around the UK.

In just 42 days he had pulled in £1,000,012 using a simple crowdfunding page.

OVER ONE MILLION POUNDS IN 42 DAYS!

But crowd funding isn’t just for techie type projects or business related services.

TAKE CHEESE…

After working in a local deli, Michael Thomson thought he’d spotted a gap in the market for good quality cheese from Northern Ireland.

So he left the deli to learn more about artisan food making, to gain cheese-making experience and to build connections within the UK artisan cheese market for a few years.

During this time, Mike developed the idea of creating a new, engaged community of small-scale cheesemakers in Northern Ireland – starting with his own business.

Mike returned to Northern Ireland with a vision, but no money to setup his own cheese business. Cheesemaking has a very high startup cost to cover premises, equipment, specialist cold room and other working capital. He had approached farmers and

other businesses to see if anyone was interested in making cheese under his management, with no luck. He even tried banks, but without a house to use as collateral they weren’t interested in giving him a loan (which is common for many entrepreneurs).

He could have used one particular type of crowdfunding called Rewards-Based Crowdfunding, where in return for cash, you promise to give the donor some of your products or services.

Page 9: COPY THESE IDEAS - Andrew · PDF fileMARCH 2015 EDITION 3 THE COPY THESE IDEAS NEWSLETTER MARCH 2015 EDITION Creating Multiple Streams of Income From Your Laptop, Tablet or Smart Phone

MARCH 2015 EDITION 9

In Mike’s case this would have allowed him to receive financial backing from fellow cheese lovers, but he would have to give away his first batches of cheese and wouldn’t have enough cheese left to sell and actually grow his business.

So he decided to use Equity Crowdfunding, where you give away a little % of your business in return for a donation – a kind of online Dragons Den, but with loads of people putting in the money and no requirement to stand in front of the big-money dragons to make a pitch. The whole thing is done online.

‘Mike’s Fancy Cheese’ raised £80,000 IN JUST 28 DAYS starting from scratch.

Working from her garden shed. Pippa Murray, founder of Pip and Nut, which sells natural nut butter products such as Almond Butter, Coconut

Butter and Peanut butter, raised £120,000 for her fledgling business in just NINE days.

At the other end of the scale – who would have thought that solving a common problem – where to park the car – could provide a huge business success.

Justpark is an app business that is using crowdfunding right now as I’m writing this newsletter, to raise money. According to website crowdcube, they have so far (at the

time of writing) raised over £3 MILLION POUNDS!

And when an independent brewer in Scotland, Brewdog, decided to use crowdfunding to raise funds, it probably had no idea that it would have:-

WITHIN 6 MONTHS RAISED £4.25 MILLION

Now, Brewdog decided NOT to use one of the many crowdfunding sites out there, to raise their money. Instead they went to their customers and made them an offer via their own brewing website.

But most crowdfunding is done on trusted funding platform sites. In the case of business, sites like Seedrs.com and Crowdcube.com – or in the case of charities or personal projects, sites like gofundme.com.

Actually there’s a little video you can watch at www.gofundme.com if you click on the ‘How it Works’ tab which is worth viewing as it gives you a quick and easy snapshot of how such sites can raise money for you.

Page 11: COPY THESE IDEAS - Andrew · PDF fileMARCH 2015 EDITION 3 THE COPY THESE IDEAS NEWSLETTER MARCH 2015 EDITION Creating Multiple Streams of Income From Your Laptop, Tablet or Smart Phone

MARCH 2015 EDITION 11

In fact over 180 CrowdFunding websites have sprung up inthe UK alone in the last 4 years. Over 9 MILLION PEOPLE in the UK have already invested in over 650,000 projects countrywide and London is now the world capital in the number of successfully completed crowdfunding campaigns.

In fact, CrowdFunding has gone from something unusual and a bit quirky to mainstream and is:-

NOW RAISING £100‘S OF MILLIONS OF POUNDS EVERY YEAR IN THE UK!

SO HOW DOES IT WORK?

Well let’s look at a real life example. Emilie Holmes had been working in advertising for three and a half years while nurturing her passion for quality tea. In 2012, she decided to launch her tea business

“I had two thirds of my budget, but I didn’t know how to make up the shortfall,” she explains.

The crowdfunding platform Kickstarter offered her a way to fund her idea of converting her 1974 Citroen van into a custom-made tea bar.

Page 12: COPY THESE IDEAS - Andrew · PDF fileMARCH 2015 EDITION 3 THE COPY THESE IDEAS NEWSLETTER MARCH 2015 EDITION Creating Multiple Streams of Income From Your Laptop, Tablet or Smart Phone

COPY THESE IDEAS NEWSLETTER12

Kickstarter is a rewards-based platform, so fans of a business idea bid in exchange for rewards related to the project.

Backers offering £15 were promised a bag of Good and Proper Tea while backers who offered her a generous £1,000 resulted in free hire of Holmes’s tea van and free tea for up to 100 guests.

Holmes’ Kickstarter page included a detailed summary of her idea, a target pledge, an explanation of what the money was for and a short video that showcased her enthusiasm and plan.

You can check the video out here:-

MARCH 2015 EDITION 13

Holmes’s video was around three minutes long – short enough to keep viewers’ attention – and she thinks the music she picked for it had a big impact. “I used Fleetwood Mac – everyone loves Fleetwood Mac,” she says.

She advises other pitchers to be in their video. “Backers were supporting me as they could see I was passionate,” she explains.

The only way for a video to be effective is to make sure it’s seen and shared by lots of people. Humour is a big motivator for this, says Holmes. She received pledges from 376 people. Her target was £10,000 and she has raised £14,682 at the time of writing.

Another example, comes from two friends, Ben Hamilton and Ed Ford who came up with an idea for The Bloody Oyster – essentially a double decker bus serving cocktails, including Bloody Marys, and oysters.

Fans of cocktails and seafood, the pair wanted to bring them to a mass audience. “The more we looked into it, the more enthused we were,” says Hamilton.

“I have a business mind and I knew we needed to raise some money.”

The pair invested their own cash, but it fell short of converting a double-decker.

Page 14: COPY THESE IDEAS - Andrew · PDF fileMARCH 2015 EDITION 3 THE COPY THESE IDEAS NEWSLETTER MARCH 2015 EDITION Creating Multiple Streams of Income From Your Laptop, Tablet or Smart Phone

COPY THESE IDEAS NEWSLETTER14

After a string of successful pop-up events of their oyster and cocktail stall, the pair launched a campaign to renovate a bus.

They chose to use a site called ZEQUS, which like Kickstarter, offers different levels of reward in return for different levels of pledges. The Bloody Oyster pitch offered 11 different pledge options ranging from £20 to £1,500, the rewards starting with an invitation to the bus launch event to a private hire of the bus and catering for up to 40 guests.

As an added incentive, the first 100 backers were added to a draw for an all-inclusive holiday in Morocco.

Check out their video on:-

http://www.zequs.com/campaign/the-bloody-oyster

The two partners raised more than £22,000 on the platform, outdoing their £20,000 target. This allowed them to kit out a bus and they secured a residency on the Southbank in London. Since then, both Hamilton and Ford have quit their jobs and are pursuing their venturefull-time.

MARCH 2015 EDITION 15

As you can see, if you have a particular idea for a business and need some funding for your start up - even if you simply want to raise money for a good cause, to help someone in need of financial support - a simple answer is:-

CROWDFUNDING!SO ARE THERE ANY DRAWBACKS?

Not really, in fact just about the only problem is that there are so many crowd funding sites out there and so much information on each of them that its really difficult to know where and when to start.

And of course, how to do it in a way to make sure you raise the money you’re looking for.

I’ve been searching around for the best solution to this and am very pleased to say that I have found something absolutely ideal which I can wholly recommend. It comes in the form of a BRAND NEW UK DVD SET which will save you not just a lot of time, but it will enable you to start a successful crowd funding campaign extremely quickly – one that can raise the kind of money you want.

You can find more information on it at the following website:-

www.crowd-funding-course.co.uk

COPY THESE IDEAS NEWSLETTER16

I won’t waste time going through everything you’ll learn on the DVDs since you can glean all that information out at the above website. However, what I like about this DVD set is that it has been put together by an expert in raising money using these sites – an expert in crowdfunding.

And if you’ve read my book Copy This Idea, you’ll know that I believe the easiest way to achieve the results you’re after, is to either have a coach, or mentor or copy an ‘expert’.

Someone who knows the short cuts. Following a mentor is a no brainer really and has been responsible for me making millions of pounds myself.

So my advice is that you take a look at this DVD set – listen to the expert – let him show you how crowd funding really works, how to go from where you are now to running a successful crowdfunding campaign and raising all the money you could possibly need for your project.

You’ll be taken through it all, step by step as you’re shown how to decide on your project/niche … how to tell your story … deciding on what to offer as rewards/pledges for the people who donate…

In short, you’ll be taken through the whole process of launching a crowdfunding campaign from pre-launch to the actual launch day. You’ll see how to maintain interest throughout the campaign and how to fulfil what you have promised.

The DVDs have loads of case studies and great step by step insights into how best to use crowdfunding to pull in the amount of money you require. Its actually fascinating how this all works, and how easy it is to do if you do it right.

YOU CAN LITERALLY RAISE TENS OF THOUSANDS OF POUNDS IN DAYS...

Let’s put it this way, if a small start-up bicycle business in Frome, Somerset can use crowdfunding to pull in:-

£40,000 IN JUST 6 DAYS…with pledges of between £20 and £1,000 in return for all sorts of goodies such as special T-shirts and places on frame building courses, you can probably come up with a good sound business idea or fundraising idea for charity yourself. Especially after you’ve watched those DVDs.

Page 17: COPY THESE IDEAS - Andrew · PDF fileMARCH 2015 EDITION 3 THE COPY THESE IDEAS NEWSLETTER MARCH 2015 EDITION Creating Multiple Streams of Income From Your Laptop, Tablet or Smart Phone

MARCH 2015 EDITION 17

Remember, you can find more information and pick up your set of DVDs at the following website:-

www.crowd-funding-course.co.uk

FINALLY, REMEMBER THOSE NUNS I MENTIONED AT THE BEGINNING?

When a fraternity of Chicago nuns, The sisters of Notre Dame, desperately needed help to replace their heating boilers after they broke down, they needed to raise over $40,000 to get them back up and running.

A local teacher decided to help and launched a Gofundme campaign to help. Raising over

$155,000, the project demonstrates just how crowdfunding can be used to pull money together fast.

And the reason it was so successful so quickly was I am sure in no small part thanks to this great video – and especially the title:-

Page 18: COPY THESE IDEAS - Andrew · PDF fileMARCH 2015 EDITION 3 THE COPY THESE IDEAS NEWSLETTER MARCH 2015 EDITION Creating Multiple Streams of Income From Your Laptop, Tablet or Smart Phone

COPY THESE IDEAS NEWSLETTER18

CHICAGO NUNS NEED HEAT

It’s the kind of ‘edge’ that can make a huge amount of difference to the amount you raise and the speed at which you raise it. The kind of edge you’ll get from those DVDs.

So get a set, sit back relax, enjoy watching them and get ready to create a project which raises all the money you could want to start a successful business.

It doesn’t matter if you don’t know what you’ll need crowd funding for, if you haven’t got an idea to run with even, because the ideas will come thick and fast as you are going through these DVDs and looking at all the amazing case studies. It really sparks the imagination and opens up a whole world of possibilities I am sure even right now you have no idea exist.

Let me know how you get on, I’d love to hear from you. I’ve already come up with loads of ideas which I had never even entertained before and I have to say I am very, very excited.

And on those words, I shall bid you farewell for another month.

ENJOY YOUR JOURNEY TO ALL THE MONEY YOU COULD NEED….

UNTIL NEXT MONTH!
