RAMANUJAN'S APPICATION FOR THE POST OF CLERK

● "Sir,● I understood there is a clerkship vacant in

your office and I beg to apply for the same. I have passed the matriculation and studied upto F.A. but was prevented from persuing my studies further owing to several circumstances.I have however devoting all my time to mathematics and developing the subject. I am comfident ,I can do justice to my work if Iam appointed to the post.I therefore beg to request that you will be good enough to confer the appointment on me. ”

CONTACTING BRITISH MATHEMATICIANS

● In 1913, Ramanujan contacted british mathematician M.J. Hill. Hill not accepted his work

● Then Ramanujan wrote to leading mathematician in cambridge G.H. Hardy. G.H. Hardy struck by Ramanujan;s results and commented

● “Thearoms have completaly dystroyed me.I have never seen in the least like them before,Rmanujan's thorem must be true if they are wrong then no one have imagination li the world to invent them.”

● G.H. Hardy invited Ramanujan to Cambridge● Ramaujan's moter resisted ramanujan to go but

later agreed

LIFE IN LONDON● Rechead in London in March 1913● Began working with Hardy. Hardy alway says● “He is comparable only with Jacobi or Euler”● Spent nearly 5 years in Cambridge● Ramanujan and Hardy was highly contracting

personalities● In 1916 , Ramanujan awarded B.Sc. Degree by

cambridge for work on highly composite numbers● In 1917 , Ramanujan get elected to london

mathematical society● In 1918 , Ramanujan was awarded F.R.S.. 2 nd Indian● In 1998 , he aiso awarded fellow of trinity collage ,

Cambridge. 1 st indian

ILLNESSS AND DEATH● Dignosed with tuberculosis and vitamin

deficiency● Climate and weather at cambridge was not

suitable to him● Also developed Hepatic Amobiasis

RAMANUJAN'S NOTEBOOK● Rananujan recorded his results in 4 notebooks.

The most of his theorem are unproven● 1 st notebook : 351 pages , 16 organised

chapters ● 2 nd notebook : 256 pages , 21 chapters● 3 rd notebook : 33 unorganised pages ● 4 th notebook called Ramanujan's lost notebook

contain 87 organised pages

PERSONALITTY AND SPIRITUAL LIFE

● Person of somewhat shy● Dignifide man with pleasant manners● Not so expressive● Credited his success to family goddes

'Mahalakshami' . Looked to her for inspiration in his work . He dreamed of mahalakshami and get solution to complex mathematical problems before unfolding his eyes.

● Often said : “An equation for me has no meaning until it express a thought of God”
