Copplestone Primary School Newsletter [email protected] Edition 21 13 th September 2019 Message from Head of School: A warm welcome back to the start of an exciting new school year! The children have settled very well into their new classes and are already displaying a great approach to their learning, new topics and new teachers. We welcome our new children and their families to Rainbow class and also our new teacher Miss Davies. We are particularly proud of our new year 6 class who are consistently demonstrating their maturity and being great role models to the rest of the school. They have quickly embraced their new responsibilities as prefects and supporting the younger children. In assembly this week we also awarded many different children with their new roles – see photos below. We are delighted to have so many pupils in leadership roles: prefects, librarians, house captains, school council and eco team. It is important that children have these opportunities to help develop their confidence and have their views taken seriously in school. I have included information in the newsletter about a new event this year to celebrate harvest time. On 2 nd October we are holding a Grandparents coffee morning for the children to host their family and enjoy a drink and a chat or a board game. Further details will be shared in a letter soon. We are looking forward to showcasing our school during an Open Morning for prospective new families. Of course you are all welcome to attend, but this will take the form of a guided tour rather than a ‘stay and learn’ event in your own child’s class. We hope to share our welcoming and happy school with the wider community and new families that may move to the area. Finally, may I take this opportunity to wish you all a ‘Happy New School Year’. The staff and I look forward to working together with you to have another successful year at Copplestone. Warm regards, Mrs Mackey Spotlight: This week the spotlight falls on our new Rainbow class who have started at school with enthusiasm this week!

‘Keep safe inside’: We have talked to the children this week about ‘keeping safe inside’ in the event of an emergency outside. This could be for example: smoke in the area, a bee swarm, an intruder or stray dog on site. Should we need to take the children indoors quickly an air horn will be sounded and the children will be escorted to their classroom where they will sit calmly down with a member of staff. Children already in the Studio will remain there. We have sounded the air horn briefly in assembly so that they know what to expect. We have explained it in age appropriate terms so as not to cause anxiety amongst the children and you may wish to discuss this further at home.

Harvest Celebration and Grandparents coffee morning (2nd October): Various suggestions have been put forward and we have decided to support Crediton Food Bank again this year. A list of what they currently need will be coming out soon. Some people wanted to provide fresh produce from our farming community, but we have discovered that this cannot be used in the way we had intended. However, should you wish to donate a fresh cake or fruit bowl then this can be shared at our new Grandparents coffee morning event. Grandparents (or older special family member) can join the children for a drink and chat and perhaps enjoy a board game. In order to accommodate everyone we will be holding two sittings, organised by alphabetical order of the children’s surnames. A letter will shortly be coming home to ascertain numbers. The sittings will be: A-M 9.30am to 10.25am, N-Z 10.30am to 11.25am I hope that this will become a lovely annual event to celebrate harvest and to be grateful for all that we have.

Purple Class Residential Payments: Polite reminder that full and final payment was due on Thursday 6th September. If you still have monies outstanding, could you please arrange for payment to be made as soon as possible. Thank you.

School Uniform: Thank you for ensuring your child is in the correct uniform. The children look so smart and are really proud of their new uniforms. Please label all items, especially cardigans and jumpers as a few have already been misplaced this week. A polite reminder that the children should be wearing shoes, not boots, thank you. The uniform information is available on our website. https://www.copplestone-primary.devon.sch.uk/assets/documents/School-Uniform-and-Expectations-2019-2020.pdf

UNICEF – We are a Rights Respecting School We will soon be starting to work with the children on our Rights Respecting Schools journey. The school council will be taking this on as their new project. This half term our focus will be on Article 28 – Every child has the right to an education and Article 29 – Education must develop every child’s personality, talents and abilities to the full.

Pre-School: The children have all settled in really well and are enjoying our Space Theme. We have made rockets out of bottles and painted Planets which has been great fun. We have been reading books called Blast Off and Aliens Love Underpants which the children have listened to and enjoyed.

Summer Reading Challenge - Crediton library: Following an assembly at school to launch the reading challenge we had a number of pupils determined to get reading! Out of all the local schools we are proud to say that we came second, which is excellent considering the size of our school. The library have called

us "the success story of the summer" as nearly all our children who entered managed to complete it. Over 20% of our pupils took the challenge compared to 5% last summer - well done to everyone who took part. Thank you to the Miss Blake and Mark from the library for motivating the children.
