SUPERIOR, ARIZONACHAMBER OF COMMERCE
Chamber Chat
Our mission is to promote business, the Town, and the quality of life in Superior and surrounding areas. After a year and a half of working on the building, the Chamber has
opened its doors at 165 W Main St. Many of you remember it as the furniture store. One of the original owners was Lucy Wing’s father. He operated a grocery store and Lucy remembers all the kids had to pitch in and work. Lucy is now the owner of the Jade Grill on Hwy 60. ( If you haven’t eaten there you’re missing out on some excellent and fresh food.) The Chamber has renovated the building and invites everyone to an open house on August 15th, from 4 to 7. The front offi ce is now open as the Visitor’s Center. Maps, brochures, trail information and state wide travel guides are there. Stop by between 9 and 4, Monday through Friday. Great news from the Cobre Valley Clinic on Hwy 60. Now open on
Saturdays from 10 am to 5 pm. Walk-ins are welcome. The expanded hours make it easy for those who work during the week. The Prickly Pear Festival is just around the corner. August 23rd is
the date, the Chamber Building and Sr Center is the place and it’s all about prickly pears. Local restaurants will dish out some terrifi c specials, demos on how to pick, juice and cook with them will take place and an early morning guided hike is scheduled. FREE admission. Oh! We can’t forget the pancake breakfast, sponsored by our Fire Dept. at Porters. You guessed it! Prickly Pear syrup is on the menu!

LETTER TO THE EDITOR
I constantly hear how bad the Obama Administration is because of all of the scandals and I certainly agree that for-mer President Jimmy Carter’s legacy as the worse President in history is in jeopardy but I don’t think that’s the real sto-ry here. I think the real story is that we accept scandals so easily and believe this kind of behavior is normal. Let me briefly explain what I mean by recounting an incident that happened to me in recent months. This story is true and from my forty-four years of experience in education I think it is more common than one might think.
In March I resigned, as Busi-ness Manager, from the Cobre Valley Institute of Technology which serves Globe, Miami,
Hayden, Superior, and San Carlos. I told the Govern-ing Board that I would not compromise my credibility by continuing to work in the School District. (Strangely, they never asked what I meant by that statement.) There were a number of is-sues that brought me to this point but one in particular crossed a line I could not tol-erate. An employee was paid $2,121.00 out of a Federal Program for supposedly over-seeing the implementation of a grant for three of our mem-ber Districts. The problem was that this employee was not entitled to this money and the Superintendent knew that prior to approving payment. The following information should clarify this point.
The employee’s regular job description already covered overseeing Federal Projects. This meant that the employee was paid twice to do the same job.
There was nothing in the Federal Project that au-thorized the payment this employee.
The Superintendent, Pete Guzman, was told repeat-edly, by me, not to make the payment because it was not a legal expense and he autho-rized the payment anyway.
Outside Auditors deter-mined that the payment was an “ineligible expendi-ture” and stated in the exit report that the stipend may have to be paid back to the State. They also said that the employee’s documentation
Leading by Example?of work performed was “not complete and approved”.
I made a request to the Board President to place this item on the agenda because the Superintendent, Pete Guzman, refused my request. To his credit the Board President put the item on the agenda.
At a regular meeting of the Governing Board they refused to do anything about the situation and simply killed the matter by voting on the Superintendent’s recommen-dation to table the issue.
The Department of Educa-tion has been looking into the incident for some time but there has been no indica-tion that they want to get involved. Their position is that the amount is too small to worry about. They don’t
seem to be too concerned with the moral or legal impli-cations. The last I heard from the Arizona Department of Education is that they can’t find any information on the Audit. I’m not joking.
Throughout this entire or-deal I was made to feel that I was the problem. I was given the impression that I was making a big deal out of noth-ing and it would all go away if I would just shut my mouth. It was clear that if I wanted to continue to be a part of the fraternity then I needed to get in line with the Superinten-dent and Board. I was told that this was a distraction from all the good things that we were doing. In short the, “end justified the means “.
Is all of this a bit strange or I am going crazy? These folks
are your neighbors, friends, and relatives. They are just like you and I, except they chose to condone something they knew was wrong. There was not one good reason for them to allow this to happen! Doing the right thing would have been so easy but for some reason they decided to ignore the problem. How can they have so little regard for the truth? How can they be so much like the Obama Administration? /s/ Neil Barwick
Editor’s Note: Allegations in this letter are being ac-tively researched by Copper Area News. The results will be published at a later date. If you have something to contribute, please contact us at [email protected].

Jim Shepherd to lead a nature walk at the Arboretum.
Discover the many natural wonders of the Boyce Thompson Arboretum. Bring your family, your binoculars, your questions,
and readiness to marvel. What bird has foot-long wing feathers? How old is a 6-foot high Saguaro? Can
Arboretum Nature Walk set for Sundaya lizard be ornate? Can you name three, edible desert plants that are at their peak in mid-July? What is animal ‘scat’ and what stories can ittell? Learn the answers to these and many other questions at Boyce Thompson Arboretum on Sunday July 20, on a 7 a.m. - 9 a.m. general tour of the main trail, guided by Arizona State Parks Volunteer Jim Shepherd. A 38-year resident of Arizona and lifelong naturalist, Jim, almost a Sonoran desert native, hastraveled the length and breadth of Arizona in search of flora and fauna. He served with the Arizona Game & Fish Department several years ago, as a Boy Scout volunteer, and recently joined Desert Fly Casters. Jim’s passion for nature and the outdoors is keen and one he is eager to share. In addition to his love of the outdoors, he enjoys writing, volunteering in his church, and having fun with his three grown sons. Most weekend nature walks are included with daily admission of $10 for adults, $5 for ages 5-12; annual memberships start
at $50 for a couple, and that includes a pair of one-time-use guest passes to bring friends or family. Read morre about Arboretum events at ag.arizona.edu/bta Parents of children age 6–12, if your child would enjoy a learning exercise during your visit, and a chance to earn a Junior Ranger badge upon departure, ask about the Junior Ranger program. At Boyce Thompson Arboretum and most other Arizona State Parks, kids can request a printed sheet with activities and facts to learn about the park during their walk around thetrails. When they return a completed sheet at the gift shop, they can earn their own Junior Ranger badge. Activities and attractions at each AZ State Park are different; each park’s junior ranger program offers new reasons for families to explore, learn together, and get outside to seejust what’s so grand about our Grand Canyon State. 1 Kings 8:56 reads like this: “Praise to the
LORD, who has given rest to His people Israel just as He promised. Not one word has failed of all the good promises He gave through His servant Moses.” Numbers 23:19 agrees by telling us that God does not lie. What He speaks and prom-ises will always happen. You can count on it. Unlike many of our human leaders, God always speaks and does the truth. When He promises you something – it will always happen. Maybe not on the timeline we expect, but it will occur at the exact, correct place in time. Everything God said or wrote in the Bible is for the pur-pose of giving us hope. Only the truth can produce hope. Hope secures tomorrow and brings us a bright future. Thank the Lord for completing the promises He has given you. It only proves how much He loves each and every one of us. Trust Him to answer your prayers; He will do it!
