We use coordinate planes to find exact locations!

Origin

QuadrantHow to Use a Coordinate PlaneA Coordinate Pair is needed!

(x, y)

A coordinate pair tells the exact location on the coordinate plane.

The x position on the X-axis goes in the x place. The y position on the Y-axis goes in the y place.

*Mathematicians plot on the x-axis first.Signs of Numbers - GPS

means turn Left or turn Down on the number line/axis.

means turn Right or Up on the number line/axis.The signs of a number tell which way to go on the number line/axis, like a GPS gives directions!Signs of Numbers - GPS

means turn left or turn down on the number line/axis.

means turn right or up on the number line/axis.If given two numbers to plot at the same timeThe First number (x) is left or rightThe Second number (y) is up or downRead Points(Figure out the Coordinate Pair)1) Start at the origin.2) Count the lines left or right toward the point. The number of lines you count goes into the x place of the coordinate pair.(x, y) becomes (2, y)3) Now count the lines up or down toward the point. However many lines you count goes into the y place of the coordinate pair.(2, y) becomes (2, 3)

Find PointsIn which quadrant is A? is B? is C? is D?

Which point is (4, -5)?

1) Start at the origin.2) Look at the first number and count that many lines from the origin left or right. (Right if its a positive number; Left if its a negative number)3) Look at the second number and count that many lines from where you were up or down. (Up if its a positive number; Down if its a negative number)Its Point C!

ADCBPlot PointsPlot (-2, 3)

Start at the origin.

-2 is in the x place, so find -2 on the x-axis.(count the lines on the x-axis from zero)

3 is in the y place, so find 3 on the y-axis.(count the lines on the y-axis from zero)

Practice!Read: At what point is the Church located?Read: At what point is the Forest located?Find: What is located at (-5, -2)?Find: What is located at (4, -4)?Plot: (2, -2)Plot: (-4, 3)

The following was given in class for student notes.Class Hand OutsHow to Use a Coordinate PlaneA __________ _____ is needed!

(__, __)

A coordinate pair tells the exact ________ on the coordinate plane.

The x position on the ______ goes in the x place. The y position on the ______ goes in the y place.

*Mathematicians plot on the x-axis first.Signs of Numbers - GPS

means turn ____ or turn ____ on the number line/axis.

means turn ____ or turn ____ on the number line/axis.If given a coordinate pair to plot, read or find

The _____ number (x) is _____________.The ____number (y) is ____________.

1) Always start at the _________!

2) Follow the GPS of the X coordinate using the lines!

-2 means to turn _____ on the ___ axis.

3) Follow the GPS of the Y coordinate using the lines!

3 means to turn _____ on the ___ axis.

4) Place, Read or Find your point!

1) Always start at the _________!

2) Follow the GPS of the X coordinate using the lines!

6 means to turn _____ on the ___ axis.

3) Follow the GPS of the Y coordinate using the lines!

-3 means to turn _____ on the ___ axis.

4) Place, Read or Find your point! Now You Try!(6, -3)
