Cooperative Education Program 2010-2011 Annual Report
Damian Wallner, civil engineering co-op representing Union Pacific Railroad at a pre-bid showing, stands 90 feet above the Illinois River on a lift span bridge.
INSIDE: 1. Introduction 2. Assignments by Major 3. Companies Hiring Co-ops 4. Assignments by State 5. Salary and Benefits 6. Graduates with Co-ops 7. International Student Assignments 8. Companies Hiring Summer Interns 9. Summer Interns by Major 10. Comparative Data
The information contained in this report is a reflection of extensive data, from Summer 2010 through Spring 2011 pertaining to students who participated in the Cooperative Education Program. Information regarding salary and employers that hire our students is presented. Data is stated to reflect not only majors, but the year that students are participating, such as sophomore, junior, senior, or grad student. Specific data related to the participation of international students is also contained in this report. On a bright note, overall enrollment in the co-op program is up 25% this year when compared with 2009-2010 enrollment numbers! From our perspective, this is an indication that the economy (national and global) is improving and our students are once again in demand. Increases in recruiting activity give rise to hope that co-op and internship opportunities will continue to increase in the coming year. Another bright note is the fact that the average hourly salary for all majors showed a slight (1%) overall increase compared to last year. However, of the four engineering disciplines that had the highest number of students participating, one (civil engineering) showed a continuing decrease of $13.58/hour in 2008-09 to $13.40 in 2009-10, to $13.27 in 2010-11. Chemical engineers experienced the largest increase, going from $18.67/hour in 2009-10 to $19.57 in 2010-11, a 4.5% increase. Mechanical engineers went from $17.45/hour in 2009-10 to $18.23, a 4.2% increase. And, electrical engineers went from $19.07 in 2009-10 to $19.66, an increase of 3%. Cooperative Education and internships continue to be valuable real-world work experiences for students and an important recruiting strategy for employers. Our students worked in 23 different states this past year. As recently as the 1999-2000 school year, 43% of
co-ops worked in Michigan, 24% in Wisconsin, and 11% in Minnesota. The remaining students (22%) worked in 23 other states. This past year, (32%) worked in Michigan, (40%) worked in Wisconsin, (4%) worked in Minnesota, and (6%) worked in Illinois. The remaining students (18%) worked in 19 other states. Interesting to note, nine students (3%) took jobs in California, attesting to the fact that Michigan Tech students have a willingness to go to where the jobs exist A small bit of information contained in this report has been obtained pertaining to students who worked on internship status during the Summer of 2010. Since students do not have to register their internships with the University, the information in this table is not complete as it only shows the names of 64 companies. However, this data does help to support the assumption that many more of our students are obtaining valuable real world work experience in their majors before they graduate, in the form of internships as opposed to co-op. A goal for the coming year is to utilize a function within NACElink to gather information regarding students and their summer internships. As a survey showed two years ago, this effort will demonstrate that literally hundreds of Michigan Tech students understand the importance and value of pre-professional work experience. The past few years have seen serious economic challenges throughout the world. Many individuals and organizations are to be congratulated and thanked for the success of the Cooperative Education Program at Michigan Technological University. Employers, faculty, volunteers, and Career Services staff members have provided outstanding support to the program; allowing students to engage with terrific opportunities. Thank you to all!
