Climate change mitigation

Renewable energy reforestation Organic agriculture

Page 5: Cooperation with Church of Scotland on Environmental Issues

We extend renewable energy, Especially in vulnerable rural areas in western China. Through these projects, people’s expenditure on fuel decreased, while the community’s adaptability to climate change enforced. Solar stoves, biogas system and other renewable energy not only reduce greenhouse gas emission, but also reduce indoor air pollution.

Renewable Energy

Photovoltaic Power Systems were provided for Tibetan People without electricity in the three big rivers source area. The system make them accessible to modern electricity service and improved their life.

Reforestation

Implement reforestation work, especially in the upper reaches of large river. That not only increase carbon sink, but also can contribute to combat soil erosion.

We also extend organic agriculture,which can reduce N2O emission by decrease of inorganic fertilizer

Climate Change Adaptation

Conduct work on disaster prevention and disaster reduction, switch our efforts to disaster prevention and rehabilitation, and enhance community’s adaptability to face extreme climate events;

We built drinking water systems for people in remote areas who have difficulty in safety water access, that can satisfy community people’s basic needs;

Natural Resource

Reduce human and livestock’s pressure on natural resources, and restore ecological balance. Increase people feed livestock in pens instead of herding, and plant grass that will reduce pressure on grassland and maintain its productivity.

Apply community based natural resources management. Community members can participate in the process of management and decision making in order to protect their own interests, and make use of natural resources sustainable. That can make balance between community development and natural resources protection and enhance local community’s ability to adapt climate change.

Agriculture and Food Safety

Protect agricultural genetic resources, maintain traditional agricultural

knowledge, and increase agriculture’s adaptability to climate change;

Extend ecological agricultural production system, increase fertilizer efficiency, especially Nitrogen fertilizer efficiency. Use more organic fertilizer, and improve crop specially rice management system. Through these measures, N2O 、 CH4 emission from agricultural will decrease.

Ⅱ How young people from the Boys Brigade be involved with Amity in our work

There are many ways of being involved with Amity.

DonationYou might like to become a donor. With the fund you donate ,we can do more to protect the planet and improve the life of the vulnerable.Feed pigs or built biogas systems with farmersUsually, biogas should be feed by pig dung. You can see how the pig raised

and how the biogas system worked. You can experience the life of farmers. Cook meal or boil water using solar stoves or biogas systemsIt is s amazing experience to cook meals with solar stoves or biogas system. You can eat local food that cooked by your own.

Plant treesWith trees you planted ,you can erase your carbon footprint.

Teach target children EnglishPeople live in areas relatively backward and have little knowledge aboutoutside world. It is a better to learn English well for them to improve their life. Volunteers whose mother tongue is English can help them.

Review our projects and Share knowledgeVisit our project site, communicate with the beneficiaries and our local partner. Improve our work and cooperation through sharing and mutual learning.
