Important Upcoming Dates!

Our Improvement Agenda for 2020

Coolabunia State School’s improvement areas are:

Improved reading outcomes for all students Improved writing outcomes for all students Improved resilience and engagement with learning for all students

This will be achieved through the drivers of consistency of practice and student engagement.

Thinking Place Processes At times, students can be involved in incidents both in the classroom and the playground that require them to have some time to reflect on the choices that they have made. This process is designed to help students consider the result of their choices and how the outcome could have differed had they reacted in another way. Through this reflective thought, students are supported to develop a sense of responsibility and ownership for their behaviour and reactions. After all, no one can control our behaviour and our choices, we are the only ones who have that control. During this time of reflection, teachers will begin to use the language and strategies that we are learning in Pause. Students will also complete a reflection sheet and this will come home with them. We ask that you acknowledge the receipt of this sheet by signing and returning to school as soon as possible. The purpose of sending home the reflection sheet is dual. Firstly, it ensures open communication between school and home. Secondly, it provides you with an opportunity to also support your child in a process of reflective thought. A consistent and united approach from both the school and home environment will strengthen the support that is wrapped around students to accept responsibility, take ownership, reflect on their choices and build their ability to react to situations in appropriate ways. Pause Program This week students further developed their understanding of the brain, its’ different parts and the job that these parts do. This was achieved by looking at the brain as a house – with an upstairs and a downstairs which houses different characters. Our brains work best when the upstairs and the downstairs work together. If our Amygdala (guard dog) senses danger he will flip our lid. This is not what we want, so we are responsible for restoring our brain back to normal. If our brain is in its normal balanced state, the stairs connecting the up and down areas can allow many messages to be carried between the house’s characters. This helps us make good choices, make friends and get along with other people. Sometimes in the downstairs brain, Lookout Luke thinks he spots some danger, he tells Alerting Allie and she sends signals to you to let you know that something might be happening. If you don’t listen to the signals and respond by using a Pause behaviour, Big Bossy Bruce has sounded the alarm, telling your body to be prepared for danger. He is so bossy that he shouts, “the downstairs brain is taking over now, the upstairs gang can work properly again when we are out of danger.” The downstairs gang flips the lid on the upstairs brain. This means that the stairs that normally allow the upstairs and downstairs to work together are no longer connected. This is when you have an emotional reaction. The reaction could be either - Fighting

Fred, Flying Felicity or Frozen Fiona.

Having the knowledge of the Brain House is very valuable for students as it gives them a language and a visual representation about what is happening in the brain and body when they are having “big feelings”. It assists with being able to name and describe the emotions felt from the Amygdala as well as the different jobs of the Prefrontal Cortex. It supports them to know when to Pause and implement the Pause strategies.

Ultimately, it assists students to take responsibility and ownership of what is happening in their brain and their reactions to situations.

Staffing Update

This week, families of students in Year 1, 2 and 3 were notified that Mrs McGilvray has accepted a transfer to Nanango State School. This transfer

took effect as of Wednesday. However, Mrs McGilvray will remain at Coolabunia State School while a replacement is confirmed. I am currently

working with my colleagues in HR to finalise staffing arrangements. I understand the importance of ensuring certainty and stability for our students in

Years 1, 2 and 3 and I hope to be able to communicate a decision to you shortly. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Tanya for her years of

teaching at Coolabunia State School and wish her all the very best for her move to Nanango State School.

Classroom news

Coolabunia students are thoughtful and generous. From time to time, when they have 10 stickers on their credit card, instead of choosing something

for themselves from the 4/5 prize box, they choose to help a poor family overseas. This week four students from year 4/5 chose to send a chicken to a

needy family. These chickens can make a very big difference to the lives of the poor family because it means they can breed chickens and eat

nutritious eggs. It's a simple thing, but it can make a BIG difference. Good work, boys!

Please like our official Coolabunia State

School Facebook site for announcements,

information and updates on how our

students are going!
