These kittens will be de-sexed in about four weeks and will then be available for adoption from the SPCA.

Continued from page 1By Sam Duff

The SPCA will see any-where between 1500 and 2000 kittens pass through its doors throughout the season, Kirsty says.

“They just come into heat,” she says. “Often it’s because of the amount of light that’s out there. So the longer the days then they will be out there more often – and, boy meets girl.”

Kirsty says there are cur-rently 170 kittens under SPCA care, although they are all with foster families. This will peak at about 300 kittens at any one time dur-ing the season, she says.

“We aim to have all our kittens and the majority of our animals out in foster care,” Kirsty says.

“We believe it’s better for them to be in a home envi-ronment before they get a permanent home.”

Kirsty says the SPCA is always looking for members of the public to foster kit-tens and other animals and people have a variety of situations.

“We match fostering to your own lifestyle.”

All fosterers need is a ve-hicle to pick-up the animals and a separate area in their home where the animals can live, Kirsty says.

Kirsty says her best advice

to cat owners is to make sure they have their little moggie de-sexed.

“Being a good pet owner involves getting your pet de-sexed,” Kirsty says.

There are other ways the public can help the SPCA look after the infl ux of kit-tens aside from fostering, including donating tinned kitten food and polar fl eece blankets, Kirsty says.

The 170 kittens currently in SPCA care are not yet ready to go up for adoption so there is a waiting list to adopt. That will change in the next two or three weeks as they get older and need to be homed, Kirsty says.

SPCA prepare for kitten season

Supporting children at ChristmasBy Sam Duff

A local businesswomen’s group and a children’s book-shop are teaming up to sup-port children during the festive season.

For the sixth year in a row the Altrusa Club of Welling-ton has erected a Chirstmas tree at the Kilbirnie Chil-dren’s Bookshop to support the children of women living at women’s refuge.

Patricia O’Donnell from the Altrusa Club of Wellington says visitors to the shop can pick a decoration and inside there is an age range and a gender.

The shopper can then buy an appropriate book, give it to the staff to wrap and it will be left under the tree to be

given to a child at women’s refuge.

“Last year we got so many books that we were able to send some to Northland,” Patricia says.

About 300 books were donated by the public last year, compared to 87 when it was done the fi rst year.

“People are very generous and understand that it goes to a child that probably has absolutely nothing.

“Usually a woman ends up in women’s refuge with just the clothes on her back.”

Patricia says the Whitby Brownies group and a group of students from St Cath-erine’s College helped to put the decorations together.

“It’s women helping wom-en,” Patricia says.

If an earthquake, hurricane or even a lightning storm hits then the residents of Berhampore and Newtown will soon be able to re-fer to their community emergency response plan to know what to do in the aftermath.

Three meetings have been held since September to bring parts of the two communities together to put together a community emergency response plan.

Anna Porter from the Newtown community centre says there has been a good response to the need for a plan.

“We have been looking at the challenges this area would feel following a disaster and from that we’re trying to determine how the community would respond to

those challenges,” she says.Jason Paul from the Wellington

Regional Emergency Manage-ment Offi ce (WREMO) says it is important to have different

stakeholders in the community, such as churches, schools and supermarkets, have input into the plan.

“We have been really pleased with the number of people that have come along,” he says.

Jason says about 50 people, rep-

resenting about 30 organisations, came to the fi rst meeting.

Claire Pettigrew, president of the Newtown Residents Association, says it is important the commu-nity have their say.

“We want to work with the entire community to make sure everybody is involved.”

She says the plan will be a liv-ing document so will regularly be changed and updated so that stakeholders stay up to date and in contact.

Anna says a fourth meeting will be held in December where a draft community emergency response plan for Berhampore and Newtown will be presented.

The next meeting for the emer-gency response plan will be held on December 9 at 6pm at the Newtown Park Function Rooms.

Thank you for supporting your local pharmacy andwe wish you a Merry Christmas

HistoryIn 1888 John Castle opened his own chemist after working for Mr Richard Ayres (one of the fi rst apothecaries and botanic chemists in the capital), and passing his fi nal pharmacy examinations.

John and his brothers, Fred and George, became chemists and subsequently fi ve of John’s seven children also became chemists, each opening a chemist store around Wellington. Eventually there were fi ve pharmacies in the Castle group.

Between 1920–1950 Mona Castle kept scales at the chemist for weighing local Newtown babies.

Ray and Santi Bhikha owned and operated the pharmacy from 1979 to 2013. In 2013 they sold the pharmacy to Shahlaa Al Salih. Ray and Santi continue to play important roles in running the pharmacy today.

When you visit the shop, you will notice we have retained the Victorian interiors. We invite you to step into the pharmacy to experience the warm ambience and décor.

A group of budding historians from Lyall Bay School have been trawling through the archives for a project on milk in school.

Milk was provided free to most New Zealand school children be-tween 1937 and 1967 under a gov-ernment programme.

In 2013 Fonterra started a Milk for Schools programme which works alongside 72 per cent of New Zealand schools to give free milk to 170,000 kids a day.

Anita Pownall, 10, says the group looked at two sides of the pro-gramme, the early version and the

new one. What made it more interesting

was that Lyall Bay School was the fi rst Wellington school to be part of the Fonterra Milk for Schools programme, Anita says.

The work the students produced has been uploaded to the Living Heritage website, a history resource put together by youngsters from New Zealand and the pacifi c.

Asha Pulepule, 9, says the children all fi nished the project with plenty of knowledge about milk in schools.

“When we fi rst started looking at it, it wasn’t that interesting but then we dug deeper,” Asha says.

Maya Hatchwell, 10, says she

enjoyed learning about why the pro-gramme originally ended in 1967.

“It stopped because people were getting sick,” she says. “The milk was left out in the sun and it got dis-gusting so people would throw-up.”

Eva Gibson, 10, says parents have to sign permission slips these days before students at Lyall Bay School can have milk.

“I like the way it’s really cold and sometimes it’s nice on a hot day.”

The students interviewed older teachers who could remember milk in schools from their younger days.

Their fi ndings were presented at a technology expo and are available at www.livingheritage.org.nz

A Mornington intersection is an accident waiting to hap-pening for walkers, according to a group of locals who are encouraging the council to fi x the problem.

Local man Caleb Carnie says a crossing is needed to connect Mornington to MacAlister Park just before the Britomart Street meets Farnham Street.

Walkers doing the Te Araroa National Walkway and the City to Sea walkway have to cross just before the intersection to Mornington and it is incredibly dangerous, Caleb says.

“It’s not a top priority yet because nobody has died,” he

says. “I have seen people down there who have a pram and a dog, what a nightmare.”

The intersection is partly blind for pedestrians looking to see if there are any vehicles coming.

Cars also often speed through the intersection, Caleb says. “It’s super busy.”

Caleb says in an ideal world it would be nice to have the entire crossing area redesigned with pedestrians in mind.

“What we would like is a pedestrian crossing with curve drops,” he says.

A raised platform in the centre of the road, signs and speed bumps are ideas that residents have discussed.

The road is very busy and

many kids try to cross it when there are sports on at MacAl-ister Park and after school, Matthew says.

“Kids are crossing there con-stantly.”

Ellen Blake, from Living Streets Aotearoa, says people cannot currently safely cross the road.

She says a pedestrian crossing may not be the best solution as it may just giving pedestrians a false sense of security without it actually being any safer.

Caleb and other residents organised a petition, which attracted 72 signatures, and has been given to the Transport and Urban Development committee at the council to review.

The Wellington Timebank, where members swap time and skills for credits, has signed up its 500th member after three years in operation.

Last week Berhampore resident Eric Krassoi Peach became the 500th member of the Wellington branch.

Coordinator Hannah Mack-intosh says timebanking is an international concept started in the United States in the 1980s.

The fi rst New Zealand commu-nity to launch their own Timebank was Lyttelton about nine years ago, Hannah says.

“It’s important for people to know each other at a local level,” she says.

In Lyttelton the Timebank became particularly helpful following the Christchurch earthquakes when locals could trade their skills with each other.

Eric is a keen bee keeper and has a background in policy work, both skills he will look to offer through the time bank.

In return Eric says he will be keeping an eye out for anybody with a knowledge of nutrition or other languages to trade in his credits for.

“The Timebank gives you the opportunity to connect with other like-minded individuals and help people out,” Eric says.

“I’ve offered to show people

around the hive and come around with me.”

Hannah says it is exciting to see that the excitement that existed when the Timebank started is still there.

In the future she says she would like to see it grow further into the northern and western suburbs as it is based in Newtown.

There is a new hub in the northern suburbs for people to get involved, she says.

“We’re after everyone,” Hannah says. “There’s no one type of person that we’re looking for.”

RetractionOn the front page of last week’s Cook Strait News Island Bay residents were asked how they think Andrew Little will do as the new leader of the Labour Party.Local resident Crissie’s comment was confused with that of another resident who was interviewed at the same time.Crissie’s correct answer is as follows: “I do not know him at all, but I hope he has charisma and is a strong leader because that's what Labour needs right now.”The Cook Strait News sincerely apologises for any distress caused by this error.

LETTERS to the editor

New and exciting changes are in store at Kilbirnie’s Bay-court Pharmacy.

Owner Ali Amzad, who has been the force behind the store since 1998, is moving on and a recognisable face to customers is stepping into his place.

Kilbirnie resident Androul-la Kotrotsos, who worked for Ali at Baycourt about 10 years ago, says she is excited to step back behind the counter.

Androulla has been work-ing in pharmacy behind the

scenes since leaving Bay-court and is looking forward to helping customers once more.

“I’m looking forward to get-ting back into the communi-ty,” she says.

Androulla says she has new and exciting plans for the pharmacy so watch this space.

“All the friendly staff will be staying on,” she says. “We are looking forward to introduc-ing a range of new pharmacy services.”

Ali says he will miss the loyal

customers that have support-ed him throughout the years at Baycourt.

Dear Ed, Jeypore Street playground should be saved.

Children's voices are rarely heard in policy consultation, such as that surrounding the suburban reserves management plan, so extra care should be taken to consider their needs.

A playground in Island Bay does not replace a

playground in Berhampore. Demolishing it and tell-

ing parents to hike half a kilometre is not justifi ed.

It's been suggested that it would take just 10 minutes.

It's ridiculous to think that – kids walk slowly, stop-ping to look at everything.

Often they suddenly need the toilet and you have to return home – or you've forgotten sunscreen/hat/

nibbles. If we want to encourage

walking over car use, local playgrounds like Jeypore St should be encouraged, not demolished.

A playground in a com-munity builds up that com-munity.

Prioritise children and keep the playground.

Save the playground

Dear Ed, I was chuffed to learn of such a memo-rial to the late Mrs (not Ms!) Gill (Nov. 10), who served as an Eastern Ward councillor for many years.

I've lived in it since the Wellington City Council adopted the ward sys-tem; and I lived for many years in Hataitai while we still voted at large for the whole City Council.

She was a decent wom-an!

She once told me she

was impliedly called a mug by some of the other City Councillors because she personally did things for her constituents in-stead of leaving it all to others.

This confi rms my view that a good many of those Councillors have merely sought the generous sal-ary, and think they need only sit on their arse and do sweet bugger-all.

Except, of course, when an election is looming -

they have to make a show of being ‘caring’!

As Mrs Gill was a decent woman, she was properly married, too.

I told one Councillor that, as he was brazenly living in sin, I wouldn't again vote for him unless/until he made an honest woman of his ‘partner’, as he called his mistress.

Oddly, I haven't heard from him lately!

H Westfold, Miramar

Mrs Gill was a decent woman

Dear Ed, we (Miramar Playcentre) celebrated our 30th anniversary with a pot luck dinner and on the November 2 we had a free, family fun day.

We couldn't have done so without the support of local businesses.

We would like to thank the following businesses for their support.

Miramar Unichem Phar-macy provided the petting zoo, Strathmore Butcher

gave us 15 kilos of tasty sausages, Miramar New World $250, Z Broadway bouncy castle, David and Maria's Carpet Warehouse provided face painters.

Other businesses pro-vided items and vouchers or food, Eleni's hair design, Elysian, Mediterranean foods Miramar, Souvlaki at acropolis, Strathmore Bak-ery, Strathmore Local, Gas works, Domino's, Subway, La Boca Loca, The Ware-

house, Noel Leemings, The Bike Barn, Miramar Fruit Supply, Chocolate Frog, The Roxi, Interislander, Alamir and Joes Cook.

Strathmore Commu-nity base, Friends of Ka-hurangi, Cancer Society and Bunnings, we also thank you for your support.

Tania Cotidis, Organiser On behalf of Miramar Playcentre.

Thanking the community

Dear Ed, as one of the owners of the section on Ira St where the heritage brick wall is located (No-vember 17), I was curious to read your front page article concerning its preservation.

It is a shame that your journalistic interest in the issue didn't extend to contacting the owners and asking for their side of the story.

We are a young family and have split this section with another

young family in order to build our fi rst homes – something we are very excited about.

We like the Brickworks wall, and support keeping it as intact as possible within this framework; on balance of the wider issues at stake, we think some incursions are warranted in order to allow for better housing in the city.

Managing the quality of these in-cursions, or alternative solutions to

access, is the remit of the council. It is their role to assess whether

development is carried out consid-erately, and in this case we think they have done that job.

We're not trying to make a buck lining Ira Street's frontage with garages, we're trying to live sensi-tively in a city we love.

Tim Gittos, Miramar (abridged)

CONCERNED: Chair of the Miramar Maupuia Progres-sive Association Robin Boldarin and heritage research consultant Gary Tonks are concerned about the council allowing developers to cut into the old Gasco Brick Works wall. PHOTO CREDIT: Sam Duff

What is your favourite thing on telly?

What tops your Christmas wish list

What gives you a cheeky grin?

Who inspired you growing up? What would your

What is one thing Cook Strait News readers would be surprised to know about you?

Who would you least like to have a meal with?

My Dad owns a pie factory. Damn good pies actually. Check out Pats Pan-try Pies everyone!

What is one thing Cook Strait Newsreaders would be surprised to know about you?

I was really inspired by my Grandad, who lived an alternative lifestyle as a permanent wwoofer at the Mana Retreat Centre in the coromandel. His foot-print was super light on the planet as he man-aged the gardens for the centre.

It’s a tough call between John Banks or John Key.

Accidentally (on purpose) dropping my piece of bread into the cheese fondue mixture (when traditional Swiss rules apply).

I haven’t owned a TV for years (feel really out of the loop sometimes!), but I loved The Wire when it came out.

I would love to do the Trans-Siberian Railway and go stay in a ger camp in Mongolia.

A at screen TV, an iPhone 10 and an unlimited shopping spree at Glassons (or for people to not buy into the madness of Christmas consumerism).

What would your last meal on earth be?

Popular Berhampore eatery Caffe Italia, now run by Wayne and Irma Petersen, has stepped away from tra-ditional Italian food and is now offering classic kiwi fare.

“Our cabinet food offering constantly changes, however, our most popular items have become permanent fi xtures

in the cabinet, such as our Cajun chicken and cream cheese fi lo.”To cater for growing demand at the

café, Wayne says they have decided to introduce a buffet dinner option which starts in mid-December.Everything from mouth-watering BBQ

pork ribs to butter chicken and roasts will be on offer, Wayne says.“Within the next few weeks we will

also be adding new blackboard options, with items like open steak or chicken sandwiches, steak nachos, citrus and shaved pan fried ginger chicken salad and various toasted club sandwiches.”The café is attached to the ever-

popular South Wellington Seido Karate

dojo and Wayne says the two busi-nesses work hand-in-hand.“The concept has always been Karate

with the café. One compliments the other.”Both the café and the dojo are open seven days a week.

“Since our takeover of the cafe we have been focussing on offering our customers freshly made items,” Wayne says.

Hello, my name is Patch and I am a domestic cat with a hint of British blue.

I am fi ve years old, I love to roam around my neighbourhood and visit everyone’s gar-dens, although my mum does not like this!

When I am not roaming around I love to play with my catnip mouse toy.

My favourite place to sleep would have to be lying on a bed with the sun shining on me.

The best part of the day is late evening when I get a lot of affection and love and when I get to sit in my mum’s shoes!

November 22 – December 21Hello baby Sagittarius! Independent and outgoing this social little gem thrives when surrounded by children their own age. They are open minded, free spirited, love to play outside and adore pets and stuffed animals. These little pleaser’s love to learn, so gear them up with lots of books and don’t be surprised if they talk early and use big words. They are the zodiacs travelers and wild child and love to explore. Summed up, this little precious is playful, optimistic, fair, straight to the point and generous. Sagittarius is the sign of the truth-teller so never lie to them or you will lose their respect!

Monday December 1, 2014

Every day our roving reporter Sam Duff breaks news and meets locals throughout the Eastern and Southern suburbs, from Lyall Bay beach to the cafes of Newtown. Each week he shares a few tales from his travels.

From the Reporter’s desk

With Round the Bays just around the corner, myself and a friend, Hannah, have set ourselves the challenge of running a half-marathon.

I am puffed having just typed that sentence, so between now and February we have some serious training to do.

We kicked-off last week with a six kilometre run around the

bays, it was a beautiful day and the views were (obviously) not too shabby.

I went to work the next day and felt on top of the world.

With a busy job and the distrac-tions of everyday life it has been easy to slip away from exercising every day. I tend to forget how much better it makes me feel on a day to day basis.

So training starts now – running some days, swimming others and maybe a bit of yoga for something different.

With Christmas coming up and all the food and alcohol it involves, it will be interesting to see how long this pre-New Year’s resolution actually lasts.

A half-marathon cannot be that hard right?

Meet Patch...

Celebrating the unspoken heroes

By Sam Duff

A Newtown karate and martial arts academy have seven new black belts in their midst.

Graham Lelliott, a top international karate expert, last week visited Kenpo Karate Wellington/Family Martial Arts Academy and graded seven members as new black-belts.

Kenpo karate is a self-defence form of the sport which relies on the movements of the body.

Among those graduating to black-belt was Rongotai College student Ryan Aranyi, 17, who has been doing karate for about nine years.

“It was quite a relief (getting to black-belt) and it was also quite sad,” he says. “I didn’t know what to do after that.”

“But now I can see myself going for-ward with karate and possibly opening up a dojo.

“It’s been a great experience.”Ryan says he enjoys karate because he

feels comfortable in potentially unsafe situations.

“If I was confronted by anyone I would feel comfortable within myself.”

Karate has also helped him focus on school work, he says.

Fellow new black-belt Aleisha Amohia, 16, says she trains about twice a week and will continue to do so.

Having worked for so long on getting to black-belt she says she did not know how to feel when she fi nally got there.

“It’s something you can be totally proud of yourself for because you have put in the work,” Aleisha says.

Instructor Sean Fitzpatrick says there was a big lump in his throat as seven of his students got to black-belt.

“You have a hard time keeping the emotions back,” he says.

Sean says all his students takes part in karate for different reasons but many of them enjoy the practical self-defence aspect.
