Committees / Sections Comments:

1. Perhaps more space for the amount of people in attendance - meetings were a bit cramped.2. Time frames on when the committee plans to have their work completed by.3. Good lively discussions.4. The first day of the safety meeting was a bit dissappointing with I-Effector having an open forum to basically pedaltheir product. I agree that the technology makes sense and should probably be explored, but I felt that these twoguys really had a different agenda and really tried to get out e-stop best practices guideline altered to benefit them.5. Being this was my first time attending the conference, I must say it was an eye opening experience to see howstandards come about. The Committee/Sections meetings are all very general and typically don't concentrate onsomething as our product, keyless bushings, but that's not to say that they aren't mentioned from time to time. Aportion of the pulley meeting focussed specifically on adding keyless bushings to the winged pulley spec.6. I didn't care for Fred Hayes and Bruce Main simply because I felt he was only interested in pushing risk assess-ment product. Fred really turned me off.7. Ask one Section Leader each year to report on their industry, challenges and conference goals.8. The schedule needs some serious work. My suggestion is to eliminate the continuation of the idler section in theafternoon (as chair person I can virtually guarantee we won't need it). Make sure that someone can attend the pulley,belt-book, idler, and accessory section meetings without conflict.9. Attendees need to be able to attend the belt book, pulley, idler and accessories committees. I know it makesscheduling difficult, but we should avoid scheduling these committees simultaneously.10. I was a first timer and I am just getting started, so I am not sure what things can be done to improve the sections.11. Really having a hard time figuring out why CEMA exists. It is not a standard, my competitors do not abide by itand when I do I price myself out of the market. CEMA is not compliant with building codes, MSHA or OSHA.12. The presentation put on during the first portion of the safety committee was lengthy and time limits should be setfor presentations.

Committees / Sections Comments, continued:13. The presentation in the safety committee may have been better if the presenters had some info available to review prior to theconference. I did not like that we were ask to make an endorsement of something we knew little about.14. The format, location, is perfect from my standpoint.15. I like the idea put forward of making the Tuesday schedule more fluid, i.e., having the pulley, idler and belt book meetings flow oneinto the other rather than having rigid, set times for them.16. Try and separate the belt book and idler/pulley committee times a little. the overall schedule was perfect.17. Unit book completed and reviewed. Sections meetings met my expectations - we accomplished a lot.18. Flexible scheduling for pulley, idler and belt book committees.19. Scheduling times between the idler, pulley, and belt book needs to be improved. As a group we moved the times a little (one hourfor each group) and it seemed to work well. Other than that I felt the sessions went fairly well.

What suggestions do you have which would make the Engineering Conference more meaningful to you and yourcompany?1. As a German owned company, we manufacture to a DIN standard and CEMA is a secondary standard. As we go forward, I wouldlike a healthy discussion on the reason for differentation of the two.2. Don't schedule the Risk Assessment "boys" again; use the opening session to tell us about how CEMA can grow membership, focus on generating more impact for our organization, and have follow up & follow through on these plans.3. More flexible Section Meeting times to permit attendance of more sessions.4. New topic for Opening Session.5. It would be better if held somewhere in the mid-west. Florida is so far to travel and this resort is very expensive. Total costs for thisconference may make this conference prohibitive for our company to send a representative. Also, would it be possible to shorten by aday - making a full day of meetings? However, it was great to get some sunshine and visit with all. Thanks for everything!6. I think we need to focus on different speakers and a different topic now. The risk assessment topic is nice and does make sense, but I think we are losing people and we need to get on with other business. I do not know the right topic, but I think it's important tomove on now. Lean seems to be a hot topic right now. Maybe we can get a company to talk about lean manufacturing and lean officetechniques. We routinely work with a local company called Tech-Solve that specializes in this. Maybe they would have an interest? Icould check if that topic makes sense.7. Have each attendee submit a 1 page form explaining more about their company and what they do. It will help to generate moreconversation outside of the "classroom".8. A speaker that introduces the neccessity of adopting global selling inititative and modify our equipment to conform. Every yearmore European and Asian competitors move into the USA market. Few USA companies market overseas so the USA materialhandling industry shrinks so we should get with it. I see this clearly in both Europe and Asia where I am trying to compete today.9. The Opening session speakers were the same as last year and gave almost an identical presentation. This could have had muchmore value to me than it did if the choice in speaker and material was different from last year.10. Sorry I don't have any at this time.11. Good job pulling it together. The event was well planned and meetings were good. Monday training looses value when it is samepresenter and similar topic year over year. I skipped it because in good conscience I didn't feel right submitting it for PE credits havingattended the session a prior year. MSHA has been changing and somone from them would be interesting for those on the bulk side.Maybe dated by next year but still relevent. Also, consider a location more centralized to the membership.12. The meeting was well organized, food was excellent, and the breakout meetings were beneficial. As a first timer I look forward tomore involvement with the group in the future.13. Better time management. There was lost time waiting between committee meetings. Could you have a general area (like tables)where companies could display their brochures if they wished to? I've been to TAPPI meetings and they allow it. It lets you learn whatother areas or product lines a company has to offer.14. None I can think of at this time.15. No more Infomercials!!! The speakers were excellent but the presentation should have been limited to B155.1 and B11 TR3 andnot be a software commercial. No problem with mentioning the availability of the software but the whole thing was geared to buyingthe software not applying the standards.16. I wouldn't change a thing. If you are going to add a companion/spouse program, we really don't think a spouse program isnecessary.17. I heard many comments on having the same speakers back is the easy way out. Many of us rely on fresh education for our PEcredits and feel CEMA Monday morning is an excellent venue for that. I would encourage you to search out fresh material coming fromnew speakers. Also, I still think that late June in Florida is tough. I'd rather meet in May again, OR come up to the midwest wherepeople could enjoy the lakes at a time when the weather is absolutely perfect up here.18. Last year, Dan reviewed more results of how the industry was doing as a whole. This was very interesting.19. It would be nice to rotate the location of the conference to a more temperate, central location occassionally to reduce travel costs.20. My impression from the meeting is that CEMA is unsure how to interact with international manufacturers of conveyor equipmentoperating/producing within the USA. As US manufacturers expand their presence in the global market, the technical focus will have toshift to a more international flavor and the designs will need to address international standards and metric units. In previous message,I remember that Continuing Education credits would be offered for attending the "Equipment Risk Assessment Engineering Workshop";is that going to happen?21. Continue to find industry relevent speakers. Fred & Bruce did a fine job presenting Risk Assessment and also representing PMMI.

MINUTES OF THE CEMA ENGINEERING CONFERENCE

SAFETY COMMITTEE MEETING Monday, June 29, 2009 – 1:30 PM

The meeting was called to order at 1:30 PM at the LaPlaya Hotel, Naples Florida by the Chair, Phil Kaffenberger. The roll call is at the end of these minutes.

Individual Topics Covered are described below. RISK ASSESSMENT PROGRAM

The risk assessment program was presented by Fred Hayes, PMMI and Bruce Maines, Design Safety Engineering for a second time with focus on reviewing B155. PMMI strongly recommended CEMA membership adopt B155 as a first step toward compliance with international safety regulations. A show of hands indicated only two out of all the CEMA membership companies approximately 50 members present are currently referencing B155. We were further advised if we build equipment conforming to Euro Codes to supply internationally and do not build to the same spec in USA, in the event of an accident our liability is definitely increased. However when the question was asked should CEMA adopt the PMMI Risk Assessment Basics, evidence of consensus was lacking.

Three Standards were cited by the presenters as governing documents:

ASME B155.1 ASME B11 GSR ASME B11 TR3 - 2000

Other relevant documents related to ergonomics were cited: B11 TR1, OSHA 3067

In order to continue the process PMMI volunteered to invite CEMA to request that references to conveyor and sortation be added to B155. Phil Hannigan will consult with CEMA legal concerning CEMA endorsing “risk assessment”. PMMI volunteered to provide “risk assessment training to the CEMA membership. The committee decided to empower Bob Reinfried, CEMA's Representative to the ASME B20 Committee, to request the B20 committee to decide a course of action regarding risk assessment.

BULK BELT SAFETY VIDEO

Todd Swinderman reported that he has written a script and intends review the bulk poster labels or alternatives and use the poster to structure the presentation similar to unit handling safety video. However due to a lack of media expertise or resource Todd is unable to proceed. Jim Wilson, Kinder Morgan volunteered to Check with his management concerning providing media services including filming at project sites.

AREA GUARDING

The work group had no draft document for the committee to review so this best practices effort has been suspended pending receipt of a draft.

Background

A work group headed by Joe Bryan had been formed to determine the direction and content of a proposed area guarding best practices document. The question concerning the scope of this document was discussed. The early investigation of work group discovered very little of the more complicated area guarding applications or safety devices were actually related to conveyors. The team was reformulated to include members with experience using area guarding as related to robotic cells, transfer cars, safety mats, light curtains, specially keyed barriers and palletizer/ depalletizer interfaces.

WHEN TO USE EMERGENCY STOPS ON 24V POWERED ROLLER SYSTEMS

Gary Giuliano reported that Intelligrated had assigned a team to study the whole issue of powered roller safety in the light of more powerful gearing is being used in 24V motor rollers including E-stop and will report their findings next year.

Background:

The question arose last year "Are Emergency Stops required on 24V powered roller systems?" 1.9 dia. 24 V powered rollers exhibit very low torque characteristics that are not generally considered as threatening from a personal injury perspective. Gripping the roller with your hand will typically stop the rotation. However other active elements in the system may continue to pose hazards. Transfers, blade stops, 24 V gear reduction motors that do generate more torque, Lagged pulleys and timing belts that more effectively transmit power to the driven rollers, even jammed product can build up pressure that constitutes a hazard. Because powered rollers are growing in popularity this is an opportunity for CEMA to get in on the ground floor and prepare a specification all the manufacturers and integrators can support. A team has been formulated of the representatives from the major companies that are involved in producing conveyor using powered roller to write the standard.

DO WE NEED A WARNING LABEL ALERTING PERSONNEL TO THE HAZARDS ASSOCIATED WITH STORED ENERGY?

Phil Hannigan polled the membership to determine the number of companies that would purchase the label. There was not enough interest to warrant producing the label. So in effect we have design and no buyers so for the present

Background

Stored energy hazards are encountered in a variety of material handling actuators. Pushers, pullers, transfers, lifts etc. In the case of lifts and some transfer application gravity represents the stored energy. More prevalent are stored energy hazards associated with compressed air actuators. Pushers and pullers in particular were selected as the subject for a safety committee study concerning selecting and endorsing a warning label. Subsequently the committee voted to proceed with a warning label which was designed by Phil Hannigan, accepted by the committee and depicted here.

STORED ENERGY

The stored energy safety discussions generated requests to consider safety reviews for different types of new equipment and to assign a working group for each type of equipment. The equipment and assignments are as follow:

Airport Vertical Sorters - John Langsdorf, Transnorm / Todd Martin, Martin Engineering

Palletizer/ shelf type - Paul Ross, Douglas / Gene Renner , Automatic Systems

Page 9: Conveyor Equipment Manufacturers Association - Home - · PDF file · 2012-07-26THE VOICE OF THE NORTH AMERICAN CONVEYOR INDUSTRY 6724 Lone Oak Blvd. • Naples, ... Idler Committee

Pallet Conveyor - Turntables, straight, curves, transfers, accumulation etc. 24V powered rollers and conventional induction motor drive trains – Mike Hale, FKI Logistex / Gary Guiliano, Intelligrated / Randy Skanse, HK Systems / Mike McGettigan, Dematic

Bulk Conveyor - Tim Bohn – Kolberg Pioneer, volunteered safety expertise related to bulk conveyor and the Mine Safety and Health Act Call Jodi @ 605-668-2590

SAFETY NETWORKS

Chair, Phil Kaffenberger posed the question: Are safety (E-stop) networks acceptable equivalent to hard wired E-stop circuits was proposed to the committee for resolution. The E-stop application guide references in section 1.1.3 General application rules for E-stops third paragraph a guideline stating:

E-stop circuits must be hard wired and not depend on any solid state or logic devices to function. Approved networking systems may be employed provided any programming changes are indelibly recorded

It was the opinion of the Chair that the paragraph is nebulous and should be revised in favor of a stronger endorsement of newer technologies including safety networks. Network technologies have advanced to position equally reliable as hardwired E-stop circuits and actually provide a greater range of functionality in terms of flexibility, fault reporting diagnostics and historical error logs.

After some discussion, the Safety Committee asked Mr. Kaffenberger to work with others and develop the proposed rewording of the paragraph for subsequent committee approval.

The proposed rewording of the paragraph is as follows:

E-stop circuits, both hard wired and safety related networks, must be designed such that any single component failure shall A) lead to the shutdown of the system in a safe state, and B) prevent subsequent automatic operation until the component failure has been corrected. Microprocessor based safety controllers must A) be password protected and B) indelibly record any changes made to the safety logic and C) maintain the degree of safety achieved by using hardwired/hardware components.

Phil Hannigan will circulate the rewording via an E-mail ballot.

Respectfully Submitted

Phil Kaffenberger, Chair.

BELT BOOK COMMITTEE HANDOUT JUNE 30, 2009

CEMA’s Purpose [CEMA Bylaws amended 2007]

The purpose of the Corporation shall be: • To promote the standardization of design, safety, manufacture and

application on a voluntary basis and in such manner as will not impede development of conveyor equipment and component parts or lessen competition.

• To promote the common interests of CEMA and the North American Conveyor industry.

CEMA’s Vision Statement [CEMA Directory 2008-2009]

CEMA, the Voice of the North American Conveyor Industry since 1933, aspires to be the Association representing the leading North American manufacturers and designers of conveyor equipment, systems and accessories. CEMA will be considered the resource for conveyor safety, dimensional and application standards. CEMA actively promotes the capabilities of its members worldwide.

Belt Book Purpose [2000 Strategic Planning Committee] The Book, Belt Conveyors for Bulk Materials Edition 6, is to be the authoritative reference on the subject of bulk material handling by conveyor belt. The focus of the book is bulk material handling using flat and troughed belt conveyors. Other belt conveying technologies are to be covered in less detail and alternate conveying methods are to be summarized. The intent is to provide an up to date general application and engineering guide for common applications that, if interpreted by a person with a general technical background, will result in a specification for a conveyor that can be economically manufactured, is safe and cost effective to operate and will perform according to expectations.

Review of Belt Book Committee Minutes 2001-2008

A. Belt Book Format and Production Issues for 7th Edition Consideration a. As the belt book grows in content do we need to separate it into 2

volumes or sections, one technical and one application guidelines orientated?

b. Stay focused on belt conveying and avoid the temptation to expand the book into a general material-handling book. Reference other books on material handling.

c. The 7th edition to follow the metric/imperial format developed by the Unit Handling Book Committee.

d. Bundle with the most popular CEMA standards needed by belt conveyor designers: 501.1, 502 and 550, at a price less than the cost of the individual publications?

e. Consider 3rd party proof reading. f. Consider making the belt book equations interactive. g. Consider a "lite" version for students that could be sold at a price point

that will increase usage at universities. h. Review other belt design publications and do a GAP analysis between the

6th edition and these publications.

into energy saving designs of conveyors for haulage. p. Color or black and white 7th edition?

B. Belt Book Content Issues for 7th edition Consideration

a. Redo the examples in chapter 6. b. Kibr issue:

i. The range of conditions, primarily ambient temperature, that apply to the Kibr factors needs to be disclosed in the Belt Book.

ii. Testing of representative rubber covers needs to be done under an agreed upon range of conditions and general methodology.

iii. The testing of different rubbers would be a blind test through CEMA headquarters.

iv. The will data shared in a blind format with all interested CEMA members.

c. CEMA's position on Low Rolling Resistance (Kibr factor) should be: i. A conservative prediction of typical standard belting’s bottom

cover rubber’s contribution to rolling resistance should be available with CEMA’s design equations.

ii. The belt manufacturer must engineer each Low Rolling Resistance application for the specific conveyor configuration and ambient conditions with information from.

iii. CEMA should not provide a test method for determining Kibr for Low Rolling Resistance rubbers.

iv. Add discussion in Chapter 7 on LRR belts in the next revision of the Belt Book?

d. Add information on vibratory feeders to the 7th edition? e. Reconcile definitions between Belt Book and 550 – consider additional

discussion of properties testing in relation to conveyor design. f. More information on Variable Frequency Drives for conveyors?

1. The meeting was called to order on Tuesday June 30, 2009 at 1:00 PM by George Mott, committee

chair. Twenty four attendees representing eighteen companies were in attendance. Roll Call and contact information is at the end of these minutes.

2. Reviewed and approved of minutes from June 24, 2008 Engineering Conference 3. Old Business: A. Reviewed draft proposal on Belt Cleaner Standard.

Exception was taken to the general direction the new Belt Cleaner Specification was going with respect to, design geometry of cleaner based on application. It was decided to form a Belt Cleaner Specification Sub-Committee to explore common ground to describe a belt cleaning system based on a particular cleaning application.

Sub-Committee Volunteers: Brett DeVries [email protected] Sub-Committee Chair Judd Roseberry [email protected] Steve Brisco [email protected] Paulo Pereira [email protected] Greg Westphall [email protected]

Corrie Godee [email protected]

B. Reviewed CEMA STANDARD NO. 575-2000 It was suggested that we add a “Purpose” statement to the standard. After review and some discussion, it was decided that the purpose as stated in the “Forward” was sufficient. It was suggested that more emphasis be put on the impact energy vs. impact force. There was considerable discussion regarding the formulas and examples used. Steve Brisco from Fenner along with assistance from Todd Swinderman and Bret DeVries is going look into this issue and report back to the committee. It was mentioned that the Power Requirement formula doesn’t match the 6 th edition Belt Book. After discussion it was decided to use the added power portion of the equation due to the Impact Cradle only and ignore the reduction of HP due to removal of the idlers. This will give a conservative good approximation of the additional HP required due to adding an Impact Cradle. It was also suggested that we add metric to the document. Phil Hannigan said he has a document that explains the procedure. (Document available for download from NIST at this link http://physics.nist.gov/Pubs/SP811/contents.full.html)

4. New Business

A. Nominations were taken for an Accessories Committee Vice Chair. Brett Devries from Flexco was nominated and elected.

CALL TO ORDER Meeting called to order at 8:30 AM. MINUTES APPROVED Minutes from June, 2008 meeting were reviewed and approved. OLD BUSINESS Coupling bolts – Discussed purpose of why we are looking at changing dimensional standard of thread length. Overall consensus is that since we are dealing with a locknut, varying degrees of surface finish, oils on the surface, etc., we can not specify a torque rating. However, we can change the maximum tensile load by changing the thread length. David Lewis will put a sample modification of CEMA Std. # 300-22 M together, send to Phil for dissemination to the group, and ultimately bring to a vote. It will, then, go to the OR group for final vote. 30”dia. and 36”dia. conveyors – We will continue to have Jeff Gerhart compile this dimensional information from member companies with the hope that next year Jeff can give us a presentation. Quick Disconnect Couplings – Having done a preliminary finite element analysis, and having realized the dramatic results, the engineering group plans to pursue this as a revision to the next CEMA 350. Bill Mecke will work on some verbiage and submit to the group next year for review. Physical Properties of Materials as a result of temperature - Mark Wilkerson was to give the engineering committee a presentation. With Mark not being in attendance, we will petition Mark to give this presentation next year.

NEW BUSINESS CEMA Installation, Operations and Maintenance Manual – The engineering committee will adopt this project. All member companies need to submit their IOM manual to Phil. Phil will then compile into a packet for joint work at the next Engineering Conference. Bucket Elevator Standards - Warren Knapp led the discussion. Warren will head up a sub-committee. Subcommittee members will include Jeff Gerhart, Trevin Berger, Chris Tarver, Brad Jorgenson, and David Lewis. The first objective of the subcommittee will be to put together a proposed Table of Content. We have decided the standard would not include a dimensional standard, but be more of an engineering publication (like the Belt Book). European Shafted Screw Std. - Dave Pitchko provided handout on British standard. Bill Mecke commented that we need to share more information between the belt committee and the screw conveyor committee, since material characteristics are the same. Trevin Berger poled the group whether they are experiencing problems with the clearance between hanger bearing flanges and face of the pipe. The majority felt that problems are minimal and should be addressed by the bearing manufacture. Chair – Bill Mecke and Vice Chair – Trevin Berger remain unchanged. ADJOURN Meeting was adjourned at 10:45 AM.

MINUTES OF THE CEMA ENGINEERING CONFERENCE

UNIT HANDLING CONVEYOR COMMITTEE MEETING 08:00, Tuesday, June 30, 2009

1. Call to order: Gary Giuliano called the meeting to order shortly after 8:00AM 2. Attendance and introductions: 19 attendees representing 11 different member companies.

Attendance roster is at the end of these minutes. 3. Review and approval of previous minutes (attached). There was a motion to approve last

year’s minutes and the motion was quickly seconded.

4. Approval of Agenda: Gary Giuliano did a quick review of the agenda and then started the meeting with old business.

5. Old Business:

A. CEMA Unit Handling Standards Status

CEMA 102 – Terms and Definitions Phil Hannigan

Phil presented a handout to the attendees that contained some information that needed to be reviewed by the group for this standard. The information was in three categories:

o Duplicate definitions. There are some terms that have different definitions as they relate to case conveyor and pallet conveyor.

o A group of new terms from Palletizer Terms and Definitions that are not currently in the CEMA 102.

o New terms found in the CEMA Unit Handling Book that are not in the CEMA 102

The group decided to change the CEMA 102’s structure and separate it into three separate groups of definitions: Unit Case Conveyor, Unit Palletizer Conveyor, and Bulk Handling. That way common terms that have separate definitions can remain as they are.

The new terms from the Unit Handling book will be reviewed by Dwight Pentzien who will offer a more complete definition of “Motor Driven Live Roller Conveyor” and “Motor Driven Roller”. He will send the proposed changes to Gary Giuliano who will start the approval process.

CEMA 401 – 2003(R2009) Roller Conveyors Mike McGettigan

Mike McGettigan from Dematic volunteered to be the new Unit Handling Chair for this standard.

CEMA 402 – 2003(R2009) Belt Conveyors Gary Giuliano

Phil Hannigan brought a handout that contained some mark-ups from this standard that need to be addressed. Gary Giuliano will look at them and take appropriate action and bring back proposed changes for next years’ meetings. John Langsdorf of Transnorm agreed to help.

CEMA 403 – 2003(R2009) Bet Driven Live Roller Conveyors Boyce Bonham

Phil Hannigan brought a handout that contained some mark-ups from this standard that need to be addressed. Boyce Bonham will look at them and take appropriate action and bring back proposed changes for next years’ meetings. Boyce and Gary have some common information in the 402 and 403 that will need to be reviewed.

CEMA 404 – 2003(R2009) Chain Driven Live Roller Conveyors Chris Glenn

Chris Glenn from Hytrol Conveyor volunteered to be the new Unit Handling Chair for this standard.

CEMA 405 – 2003(R2009) Slat Conveyors Boyce Bonham

No current activity CEMA 406 – 2003(R2009) Line Shaft Driven Conveyors Chris Glenn

Chris Glenn from Hytrol Conveyor volunteered to be the new Unit Handling Chair for this standard.

CEMA 601 – 1995 Overhead Trolley Chain Conveyors Dwight Pentzien

Dwight Pentzien is going to review some changes he believes needs to be incorporated into this standard and we will resubmit this standard for an update next year.

B. Election and approval of new chairpersons for aforementioned CEMA Unit Handling

Standards. Mike McGettigan and Chris Glenn stepped up and volunteered to take over the

chairman positions left vacant by Bruce Whitman and Don Kloosterhouse. Both Bruce and Don retired last year.

C. CEMA Unit Handling Safety Documents

E-Stop Application Guide for Unit and Bulk Belt Belt Conveyors

Phil Kaffenberger of HK Systems volunteered to write some verbiage to rephrase a portion of this best practices document to remove the limitation of direct hardwiring of safety devices. It is felt that this statement could somehow indicate that CEMA does not agree with the use of networked safety devices, which is not the case.

Page 30: Conveyor Equipment Manufacturers Association - Home - · PDF file · 2012-07-26THE VOICE OF THE NORTH AMERICAN CONVEYOR INDUSTRY 6724 Lone Oak Blvd. • Naples, ... Idler Committee

This document is a “Best Practices” document and the group reaffirmed the meaning of that stating that each member company is free to do as they wish, but this document represents the best know practices of the membership at the time of its release last year.

Design and Safe Application of Conveyor Crossovers for Unit Handling Conveyors

Gary Cline and John Langsdorf of Transnorm will be reviewing this document for relevance to the baggage handling sector. They agreed to have this reviewed for compliance by the end of the summer. We may need to make some modifications to this document to include best practices for that business sector.

Noise Hazard Reduction Technical Report

No current activity

Unit Handling Safety Video Bob Reinfried of CEMA reported that we have sold 185 copies of this video this

year. Gary Giuliano urged the group to take advantage of the safety posters and

safety videos from CEMA and ship them with every order.

Safety Documents Needed or Under Development Mike Hale of FKI-Intelligrated would like to create a “best practices” guidline as it

relates to the safety and application of Transfers, Shuttle Cars, and Lifts. Chris Glenn of Hytrol and Bjorn Hansen of Industrial Kinetics volunteered to help Mike where needed.

Phil Kaffenberger brought up the idea of have the Spill Guarding Chapter from the Unit Handling Book as a separate document freely available on the CEMA Safety Page. The group discussed this and resolved to simply add a reference to the CEMA Unit Handling Book on the Safety Page that specifically points to the Spill Guarding Chapter in The Unit Book which will have to be purchased if interested parties what further information. Phil Kaffenberger will be drafting the correct verbiage for this and forwarding it to Gary Giuliano who will work with CEMA on getting it added to the Safety Page.

6. New Business:

A. Motor Driven Live Roller Conveyor Safety Labels: We need to add a page to the Label Placement Guideline outlining the CEMA agreed upon usage and placement of labels for this product.

The group agreed to leave this topic go for now as we all try to develop safety label application guidelines within our own companies. Next year member companies will report back their findings and current best practices to see if we are any closer to a common resolution on this topic.

B. Unit Handling Committee Elections: Chris Maines of Intelligrated was nominated and

approved as the Chairman of the Unit Handling Committee and next years Engineering Conference first vice chair. John Langsdorf of Transnorm was nominated and approved as the vice chair of the Unit Handling Conference.

Page 31: Conveyor Equipment Manufacturers Association - Home - · PDF file · 2012-07-26THE VOICE OF THE NORTH AMERICAN CONVEYOR INDUSTRY 6724 Lone Oak Blvd. • Naples, ... Idler Committee

C. The topic of getting information out to the membership (other than just the OR’s) came up. At times, there appears to be an issue with information getting from the OR’s to the remainder of the member company’s staff. CEMA started a program called “Did You Know” emails to help combat this issue. It may not be working as intended, so Bob Reinfried will take another look at this and see if there is something we can do to improve the “Did You Know” process.

7. Next Meeting – June 26 - 29, 2010 – LaPlaya Hotel, Naples, FL. (185.00 per night) 8. The Meeting concluded at lunch time and the Unit Book Meeting started immediately after

lunch.

CEMA Application Guide for Unit Handling Conveyors

UNIT HANDLING CONVEYOR COMMITTEE MEETING MINUTES Tuesday, June 30, 2009

1. Unit Book Status Update:

Book is finished, printed, and ordered copies delivered. Member Sales are 303 Books to date. Non-member sales are 12 books to date. Gary Giuliano to get with Jim McKnight who chairs the marketing committee for

the Unit Book to figure out how we can increase sales of the book and get the word out there.

2. Begin discussion on ideas for Unit Book 2nd Edition

Potential added chapters are currently identified as: o Variable Frequency Drives o Belt Cleaners, Compactors and Settling Vibrators

Identify and discuss other possible future chapters: o We discussed the possibility of adding chapters for Airport Baggage

conveyor. No firm decisions were made, but this was added to the list of potential Chapters

Open discussion on possible needed changes and updates o The group agreed that the next addition should not come out until 2012

at the earliest. 3. Define a plan to poll buyers with a survey after 6 months or so to get feedback from them as to

what their likes, dislikes are with the first edition. Have this feedback by next years Engineering Conference to help drive a new plan for the 2nd edition.

The group discussed the survey in great detail and came up with a list of

questions that we currently think will give us enough feedback to help drive the contents and necessary changes for the next edition.

We discussed how the survey would be launched. Word file, on line survey web site like Survey Monkey or Zoomerang, etc.

The following is a word file representation of what we would like the survey to contain:
