Dr. Veera Gnaneswar Gude Assistant Professor, Civil & Environmental Engineering Mississippi State University Claim: Microalgae, a third generation biofuel resource, has the potential to become a viable feedstock due to their high oil content and environmental-friendly nature. The major challenge, however, has been the high cost of recovering oil from the microalgae prior to converting it into biodiesel. This innovation converts wet algae into biofuel in a shorter time with a better yield than current methods Technology: In this process, biomass is treated with water at low temperatures (200-400 °C) and high pressures. A wet alga that consists of 90% water is treated with solvents and sent to a centrifuge unit to collect crude biofuel. Heating the mixture in vacuum dryer can recollect solvents. Valuable by-products in this method can be separated and used for other purposes, which increases profits and sustainability. Advantages of Technology: No alcohol No catalyst Short extraction times ~ 10 minutes Better yield ~ 46 % Stable and usable co-products Potential Applications: Transportation Power generation Residential Property of Arrowhead Center. Claim: Microalgae, a third generation biofuel resource, has the potential to become a viable feedstock due to their high oil content and environmental-friendly nature. The major challenge, however, has been the high cost of recovering oil from the microalgae prior to converting it into biodiesel. This innovation converts wet algae into biofuel in a shorter time with a better yield than current methods

Technology: In this process, biomass is treated with water at low temperatures (200-400 °C) and high pressures. A wet alga that consists of 90% water is treated with solvents and sent to a centrifuge unit to collect crude biofuel. Heating the mixture in vacuum dryer can recollect solvents. Valuable by-products in this method can be separated and used for other purposes, which increases profits and sustainability.

Advantages of Technology:• No alcohol • No catalyst • Short extraction times ~ 10 minutes • Better yield ~ 46 % • Stable and usable co-products

Potential Applications:• Transportation • Power generation • Residential

The Office of Intellectual Property & Technology Transfer (IP Office) at Arrowhead Center

protects, manages, and commercializes the creative products of New Mexico State University.

Since opening in 2005, the IP Office has aided in the success of research from a wide range of

departments and disciplines, from engineering and chemistry to agriculture and environmental

science. The focus is on use and impact: the IP Office helps shape how NMSU innovations are

used and deployed throughout the wider community. The IP Office is responsible for administering

NMSU’s Intellectual Property Policies and for managing NMSU’s intellectual property through

activities such as legal protection and compliance with federal guidelines. The IP Office also

provides support for NMSU community members with questions or concerns that arise around

research contracts and relationships with external organizations.
