EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES
CONTROVERSIES INWOMEN’S HEALTH
Increasing appreciation of the unique needs of womenpatients and women health care providers has created aneed for innovative educational programs on women’shealth. This program will provide a practical update on a full range of common but controversial issues in women’shealth. Emphasis will be placed on new developments inpreventive care for women, issues in reproductive health,and clinical strategies in the diagnosis and treatment ofcommon gynecologic and medical disorders of women. An audience response system will be used and ample timewill be provided for questions and discussion. An electroniccourse syllabus will be distributed to all participants prior tothe meeting. This course is presented by the Division ofGeneral Internal Medicine, Department of Medicine, in close collaboration with the Department of Obstetrics,Gynecology, and Reproductive Sciences and is sponsoredby the University of California, San Francisco.
Designed for practicing internists, family practitioners, and allother health professionals interested in providing high qualityprimary care, this course will present a comprehensive reviewof new developments in outpatient medicine. Special attentionwill be paid to the day-to-day controversies of office practice,emphasizing preventive medicine, diagnosis and treatment ofcommon disorders, issues in women’s health, and currentapproaches to management of chronic illness.
The purpose of this course is to increase competence andimprove clinician practice in primary care and women’s health. We specifically anticipate improvements in skills and strategies to:
• discuss and implement new guidelines for women forprevention and early detection of cancer with clinical exams, pap tests, genetic tests, and diagnostic imaging;
• discuss and implement new guidelines for women to prevent infectious diseases with vaccines, screening, and chemoprophylaxis;
• diagnose and treat common problems in women's healthincluding lipid disorders, hypertension, osteoporosis,menopause, amenorrhea, PCOS, breast cancer, UTI’s, and dementia;
• counsel patients about treatment options in contraceptionand therapeutic abortion;
• counsel women about best strategies for maintaining anideal diet, the use of vitamin and mineral supplements, and the role of bariatric surgery;
• manage common problems in dermatology;
• provide optimal care for transgender patients;
• select the best diagnostic tests;
• utilize optimal strategies to enhance value in medical practice.
