The Contribution of aMuslim Migrant to Australia

Abdallah Magar migrated to Australia after a successful academic career in Baghdad,Morocco and Cairo.

In Australia he began a business career in the aerosol industry. He developed a new process for using hydrocarbon propellant to replace the fluorocarbons that we now know is sodetrimental to the ozone layer.

THIS REDUCED THE RETAIL PRICE OF AEROSOL CANS FROM $1.50 TO $0.48.

He established the Muslim Community School in Perth after realising there is no guidance, assistance or integration for Muslim children in Perth. He started with 2 teachers and 50 students. By 2003, the renamed Australian Islamic College boasted over 2000 students, 270 staff and three

colleges. THE COLLEGE SAVES THE AUSTRALIANGOVERNMENT APPROXIMATELY $6 MILLION A YEAR, which would otherwise be spent on educating students in the public school sector.

One of the aims of The Australian Islamic College is to

CONTRIBUTE TO THE ‘FULL SELF RELIANCE’ OF AUSTRALIA BY BUILDING-UP A NEW GENERATION WITH HIGH STANDARDS OF MORALS/VALUES AND A HIGH GOAL IN MIND TO EXCEL ACADEMICALLY AND IN INVENTION . THIS WILL ULTIMATELY RESULT IN MORE EXPORTS AND LESS IMPORTS.

The college also works towards SAVING AUSTRALIA BILLIONS OF DOLLARS BY CONTRIBUTING TOWARDS CURING SOCIAL DISEASES SUCH AS DRUG ABUSE, EFFECTS OF ALCOHOL, GAMBLING ETC.

The College is active in presenting information to the community about Islam. It is also actively involved in a Channel 31 TV production – Breaking Barriers (Sunday nights 7-8 pm) and Vision of Islam (Wednesday nights 7-8 pm). The College also regularly participates in presentations at Police Academy Training Sessions, other schools and Royal Australian Navy etc.

THE COLLEGE WORKS TOWARDS PROMOTING HARMONY FOR ALL BY DISPELLING ANY MYTHS AND MISCONCEPTIONS ABOUT THE ISLAMIC FAITH IN THE GENERAL COMMUNITY.

The latest contribution is the production of Wake-up Call! A weekly newspaper with interesting articles to enrich the knowledge of both Muslims and Non-Muslims. The goal of having Wake-up Call newspaper is to promote ACTION, ORGANISATION and UNITY.

Compiled two books on the human body and nutrition for the Ministry of Education in Morocco formass circulation by the age of 22.

In 1969, pioneering the use of ‘Hydrocarbon propellant instead of Flurocarbons, in the aerosol industry.

Outcome: Reducing the cost of the aerosol products by one-third. (From the retail price of $1.50 to 0.48 cents per can).

This was the product in the market from 1969 to 1974 worldwide. The above resulted in receiving a contract with the Australian Military during Mr Magar’s ownership of

Australian Aerosol Products.

3.1 Introduced most of garden products (such as fungicides, pesticides etc) into aerosol products.

Outcome: The introduction of most gardening products in an aerosol form was a unique concept at that time for the housewife.

3.2 Formulation and introduction for the first time new lines to the Australian markets such as SWISH-X – outdoor fogger and IN THE PINK instant soap foam.

Mr Magar pioneered the concept of the outdoor fogger (SWISH-X).

IN THE PINK was a very unique concept of a complete new body shampoo formula or a new way of using soap as opposed to the old traditional blocks of soap, IN THE PINK came direct from the can.

Outcome: These products were a first concept in the market. It proved to be a valuable contribution to the local market.

Magar Enterprises opened a new market for medications for live sheep export to the Middle East.

Outcome: This brought $12 million hard currency into Australia, between the years of 1980 to 1994.

During his role as a Production Manager and Research and Development for the Blue Cross Products, Mr Magar succeeded in motivating his staff to set clear production targets and goals and provide feedback on performance. He doubled previous production figures while developing and maintaining excellent staff relations.

Outcome: The maintenance of a daily control system over production efficiency, production records and staff output.

Establishing, managing and directing the three Australian Islamic Colleges – Dianella, Thornlie and Kewdale with head office in Booragoon.

The following are the Outcomes:

9.1 Savings for the Australian Government: An average savings of about 6 million dollars per year for the Government. For example in 2003: 2000 students X $3000 savings per student = 6,000,000 (6 million dollars)

9.2 Promoting Morals and Values: Developing a new generation of students, who excel in high academic standards with morals and values. For example producing students that would wish to become good caring doctors with excellent morals and val-ues – not students who wish to become doctors for the sake of the status and salary.

9.3 Information Technology: Instilling into the students the use of technology to serve the whole humanity and not to harm it. For example, using nuclear research for peaceful purpose and not for wars

9.4 Engraving into students’ minds, goals to serve: Engraving into students’ minds, goals to serve Australia by inventing new technology and products to make Australia dependent fully on its own resources and increasing exports and decreasing imports. This also gives them the sense of belonging to Australia.

9.5 Think Big: To train the students to think big in order to contribute to Australia to enrich the society.

9.6 Contributing towards the social diseases: Most importantly, to contribute toward curing the social diseases from the root, for example, gambling, alco-hol, drugs etc. All this will result in savings of billion of dollars for our country.

9.7 Working as an act of Faith result in saving the DOLE money:The AIC also instils in its students a strong work ethic as in Islam any task done with the right intention is seen as an act of worship (eg. work & study). Working is an act of faith and all students are taught the im-portance of being independent individuals and to not be a burden on society. This will result in savingmillion of dollars of DOLE money.

9.8 Promoting the following concepts:

9.8.1 Forgiveness (Repel evil with good and you will turn your enemy into your friend),

Sura: 41– Fussilat V:34

Nor can Goodness and Evil be equal. Repel (Evil) with what is better: then will hebetween whom and thee was hatred become as it were thy friend and intimate!

Verses 3:133-134 with YUSUF ALI COMMENTARY

Be quick in the race for forgiveness from your Lord, and for a Garden whose width is that (of the whole) of the heavens and of the earth,

prepared for the righteous.

452 The Fire is, as always, contrasted with the Garden in a spiritual sense,- in other words, Hell contrasted with Heaven. Lest we should think that Heaven is a sort of enclosed material Garden somewhere in the skies, we are told that its width alone is that of the whole of the heavens and earth, -all the creation we can imagine. In other words our spiritual felicity covers not merely this or that part of our be-ing, but all life and all existence. Who can measure its width, or length, or depth? (3:133)

Those who spend (freely), whether in prosperity, or in adversity; who restrain anger, and pardon (all) men; for Allah loves those who do good.

453 Another definition of the righteous. So far from grasping material wealth, they give freely of themselves and their substance, not only when they are well-off and it is easy for them to do so, but also when they are in difficulties, for other people may be in difficulties at the same time. They do not get ruffled in adversity, or get angry when other people behave badly, or their own good plans fail. On the con-trary, they redouble their efforts. For the charity-or good deed- is all the more necessary in adversity. And they do not throw the blame on others. Even where such blame is due and correction is necessary, their own mind is free from a sense of grievance, for they forgive and cover other men’s faults. This is as far as other people are concerned. But we may be ourselves at fault, and perhaps we brought some calamity on ourselves. The righteous man is not necessarily perfect. (3:133)

9.8.3. Clearing the Misconception about Terrorism and Jihad:Terrorism, unjustified violence, and the killing of innocent people are absolutely forbidden in Islam. Islam is a way of life that is meant to bring peace to a society, whether its people are Muslim or not. The extreme actions of those who claim to be Muslim may be, among other things, a result of their ignorance or uncontrolled anger. Tyrant rulers and those who commit acts of terror-ism in the name of Islam are simply not following Islam. These people are individuals with their own views and political agendas.

The word "jihad" does not mean "holy war". Instead, it means the inner struggle that one endures in trying to submit their will to the will of God. Some Muslims may say they are going for "jihad" when fighting in a war to defend themselves or their fellow Muslims, but they only say this because they are conceding that it will be a tremendous struggle. But there are many other formsof jihad which are more relevant to the everyday life of a Muslim such as the daily struggles against self-desire, the struggleagainst a tyrant ruler or against the temptation of Satan, etc., etc.

9.8.4. Women in Islam: Women are not oppressed in Islam. Any Muslim man that oppresses a woman is not following true Islam. Among the countless teachings of Prophet Muhammad which protected the rights and dignity of women is his saying, "...the best among you are those who treat their wives well." (Related by Tirmidhi)

Islam grants Muslim women numerous rights in the home and in society. Among them are the right to work and earn money, the right to financial support, the right to an education, the right to an inheritance, the right to being treated kindly, the right to vote and representation on a board, the right to a dowry, the right to keep their maiden name, the right to worship in a mosque, etc., etc.

9.8.5. Modesty: Men and women must dress modestly. Men must cover their body from waist to knee at all times, and women must cover their head, arms and legs. In some places women cover their face too when they are outside their home

9.8.6. Tolerence in Islam (Holy Quran 60:8-9): 8- Allah forbids you not, with regard to those who fight you not for (your) Faith nor drive you out of your homes, from dealing kindly and justly with them: for Allah loveth those who are just. 9- Allah only forbids you, with regard to those who fight you for (your) Faith, and drive you out, of your homes, and support (others) in driving you out, from turning to them (for friendship and protection). It is such as turn to them (in these circumstances), that do wrong.

9.8.7. JESUS CHRIST IN ISLAM (Peace and Blessings be Upon Him)

Jesus (PBUH) in the Qur’an The acceptance of Jesus Christ (Peace be upon him) by Muslims is a fundamental article of faith in Islam, and that a Muslim cannever think of Jesus (PBUH) in any derogatory terms. A Muslim is happily denied the liberty of defaming Jesus (PBUH) or any other prophet of GOD.

A. JESUS AS CHRIST - HOLY QURAN (3:45-46) Behold! the angels said: “O Mary! Allah giveth Thee glad tidings of a Word from Him: his name will be Christ Jesus. The son of Mary, held in honour in this world and the Hereafter and of (the company of) those nearest to Allah; “He shall speak to the people in childhood and in maturity. And he shall be (of the company) of the righteous.”

B. THE NEAREST TO MUSLIMS ARE THE CHRISTIANS- HOLY QUR’AN (5:82) And nearest among them in love to the Believers you will find those who say, “We are Christians”: because amongst these are men devoted to learning and men who have renounced the world, (priests and monks) and they are not arrogant.

C. THE MIRACLES OF JESUS (PBUH) – HOLY QUR’AN (5:110)Then Allah will say: “O Jesus the son of Mary! Recount My favour to you and to your mother. Behold! I strengthened you with the Holy Spirit, so that you spoke to the people in childhood (cradle) and in maturity. Behold! I taught you the Book and Wisdom, the Law and the Gospel. And behold! When you made out of clay, as it were, the figure of a bird, by My leave, and you healed those born blind, and the lepers, by My leave. And behold! When you brought forth the dead by My leave. And behold! When I did restrain the Children of Israel from you (when they resolved to kill you) since you came with clear proofs, and the unbelievers among them said: This is nothing but evident magic.

D. MARY HONOURED (MOTHER AND SON) – HOLY QUR’AN (3:42) Behold! The angels said: “O Mary! Allah has chosen you and purified you, chosen you above the women of all nations.”

EXCREPTS FROM THE ADVANCE AUSTRALIA FAIR AWARD PRESENTATION

REASON FOR THE AWARD…

Although the Advance Australia Awards are offered for four principle categories, this outstanding nominee has, in no small way, contributed to no fewer that 15 different fields of Endeavour, including agriculture, hor-ticulture, manufacturing, industry, design innovation, environment, exports, tourism (as in attracting overseas students to Australia for educational purposes and Eastern states people to Western Australia for schooling) services to Youth, community service, education, employment, public relations, inter-faith relations and media services.

Through his efforts in all areas, Australia and Australians have benefited in many and various ways.

ON THE ESTABLISHMENT OF THE MUSLIM COMMUNITY SCHOOL…

In 1986 he began the crowning point of his life’s work.

While assisting the family of a Muslim woman who had died, leaving several young children, he noticed that the family was entirely alone and that the children had no religious knowledge whatsoever. On investigating further, he found that for Muslim immigrants, there was no organized guidance, assistance, integration advi-sory agency, no facilities for teaching Muslim children and no religious instruction facilities.

Their rich heritage, both cultural and religious, seemed doomed to be lost or discarded in their new land.

ON COMMUNITY WORK…

An active member of the Inter Faith Religious group which conducts meetings and discussions to promote in-terfaith harmony and understanding. On occasions he gives advice on the presentation and content of the Ara-bic language radio programme on 6NR. He himself speaks Arabic English and French.

During his overseas promotional trips he constantly emphasised the many advantages of studying in Austra-lia, resulting in an increasing and ongoing influx of overseas students, not only to the Australian Islamic Col-lege, but to other West Australian institutions as well- all of which but help the overall and local economies.

ON FUTURE PLANS…

He has been planning for and working towards the introduction of Islamic Courses at Curtin and Murdoch Universities by liasing with the schools Principal and the University authorities.

ON ABDALLAH MAGAR…

This man has charisma and the ability to make dreams a reality while cheerfully and confidently carrying on during adversity. He is an energetic perfectionist who expects others around him to be equally enthusiastic, which is not an easy accomplishment. His achievement is not just in the building of brick and mortar which he has seen come to fruition, but it is in the building of future, upright Australian citizens, united in the common background of their extraordinary school in their new country…
