Definition of Diphthongs

A sound formed by the combination of two vowels

in a single syllable.

Indonesian Diphthongs• It is pronounced like in the word

“bay” or “nine”• e.g: pandai, kirai, ramai, tupai.ai• It is pronounced like in the word

“how”• e.g : kau, bangau, danauau• It is pronounced like the word

“boy”• e.g: amboi, sepoi.oi

The Similiarities of L1 and L2

L1 and L2 have the same way in applying the diphthongs in pronunciation.

The 3 diphthongs of L1 is similiar to the ones which belong to L2.

There are 8 Diphthongs

There are Centring and Ending Diphthongs

It could be produced by two separated vowels, or even only one vowel

the proccess of learning English diphthongs.

Learning English diphthongs is difficult and learners usually make some errors.

Learning diphthongs needs a motor skill which has to be practised in order to obtain a good result.
