President's Perspective President Milone-Nuzzo writes of how the 2020 Commencement was in some ways an even better event done virtually , and looks forward to an exciting start of the fall semester even as the coronavirus pandemic continues. 2020 Commencement a Virtual Success The 566 new graduates of the IHP were celebrated on August 30 during a virtual event that, despite being delayed more than three months because of the coronavirus, showcased their excellence and determination. SLP student Meyyammai Muthu (left) gave the keynote address, the fifth honorary degree was awarded, two outstanding alumni were recognized, and four retiring faculty from the School of Nursing received emerita status. A Modified Return to Campus for Fall Semester Students returned to campus in late August as the fall semester began, using an academic plan to provide flexibility in their course schedule to participate in clinical education placements as they become available while also limiting the number of people on campus at any one time. IHP Resilience Virtual 5K to Support Student Emergency Fund The Staff Council’s Community Service and Wellness and Social committees have teamed up to create the IHP Resilience 5K 2020 to foster community and raise funds for the IHP Student COVID-19 Emergency Fund. Donations and the $10 registration fee are tax-deductible, and all registrants will receive a free t-shirt courtesy of Human Resources and President Paula Milone-Nuzzo. Run, walk, bike, or skateboard the virtual 5K through Labor Day, September 7. Please send a selfie after completing it and, if you’re wearing your IHP Resilience baseball cap and/or a mask, even better! Register. Continuing the Conversation on Power, Privilege, and Positionality Each semester, all new students attend “What's the IHP's Role in Health Care? Exploring the Impact of Power, Privilege, and Positionality,” an event featuring expert panelists who discuss systemic oppression in health care. Led by student efforts, this year the CSD Department has created a follow-up Exit PPP event for current and graduating students, as well as faculty and staff. Incoming CSD students were also invited to join for the presentations. The first iteration was held on August 25 via Zoom and was attended by more than 100 people. The session began with presentations by Dr. Tracy Conner (left, top), an experimental syntactician studying African American English at the University of California, Santa Barbara, and Dr. Shameka Stanford (left, bottom), a specialist in juvenile forensic speech-language pathology at Howard University. Talks were followed by a panel where each speaker took questions from the virtual audience, with attendees then breaking out into small facilitated discussion groups.

2020 Commencement a Virtual Success

The 566 new graduates of the IHP were celebrated on August 30during a virtual event that, despite being delayed more thanthree months because of the coronavirus, showcased theirexcellence and determination. Climate Center Joins National Education Initiative

The MGH Institute’s Center for Climate Change, Climate Justice, and Healthhas joined the Nurses Climate Challenge, a national campaign led by HealthCare Without Harm and the Alliance of Nurses for Healthy Environments. Thenational campaign's goal is to mobilize nurses to engage and educate otherhealth professionals and students by using a comprehensive set of easy-to-use resources to prepare nursing students to better care for patients andcommunities.

Early Nursing Leader Passes Away

Elizabeth "Beth" Grady, who was an early leader of the IHP's nursing programwhen it began in the early 1980s, passed away in August. According to herobituary, "Beth earned a PhD in organizational behavior at Case Western ReserveUniversity to increase the depth of her knowledge and skills in nursing leadership.That leadership was nowhere more evident than during her decade helping tocreate and then serving as Director of the MGH Institute of Health Professionsgraduate program in nursing. She really loved this work and was deeply respectedand appreciated as a mentor and innovator by her colleagues and students."

Educating the Future Front Line –The IHP Today

"Educating the Future Front Line – The IHPToday" on October 22 is a virtual event to supportscholarships at the IHP. The featured speaker willbe Michael Brenner, a professor at HarvardUniversity, who will present his work on developinga Google app for aphasia patients by partneringwith Jordan R. Green, director of the Institute’sSpeech and Feeding Disorders Lab. To register forthe free event, please email Amy Doherty.

Faculty News

Faculty Recognized at Virtual Convocation

Several faculty were recognized for their excellence on September 1 at the 2020 virtual FacultyConvocation. Dr. Sofia Vallila Rohter, an assistant professor of communication sciences and disorders,received the Nancy T. Watts Award for Excellence in Teaching, the IHP's highest faculty honor.

Faculty to Research Effects of COVID-19

Twenty faculty members will use eight seed grants distributed by the Research Operations Committee toresearch the effects of the coronavirus on health care. It is hoped that these grants will develop intoexternal grant proposals for translational research with the goal of tapping into the roughly $4 billion innew NIH research funding on the pandemic.

PhD in Rehabilitation Sciences ProgramChanges

Dr. Bob Hillman, who has been director of the PhD inRehabilitation Sciences program since its inception, hasstepped down but will continue being connected to theprogram as an adjunct faculty member. Dr. TeresaKimberley, director of the Brain Recovery Lab and a professor

of physical therapy, has been named interim director.

Dr. Janice Palaganas, associate director of health professions education, andDr. Peter Cahn, associate provost of academic affairs, have launched thepodcast series What's Your Delta? MGH Institute's 3 Tips for FacultyDevelopment. They have provocative and candid conversations, explorefaculty development, and tease out tips that might be helpful for anyeducator, through stories, debates, and laughs. Each podcast concludes witha short summary of three tips for handy reference later.

Dean Tagliareni Recognized for Leadership

School of Nursing Dean Elaine Tagliareni received a DAISY NurseLeadership Award at the Doctor of Nursing Practice convocation on August30. The award was created in 2015 to recognize courageous leaders whofoster an environment where compassion and courage can thrive. TheDAISY Foundation was established in 1999 by Bonnie and Mark Barnes,who lost their son Patrick to an autoimmune disease.

Four SON Faculty Named Emeritae

Drs. Inge Corless, Janice Goodman, Pat Lussier-Duynstee, and NancyTerres retired from the School of Nursing. Combined, they have 96 years ofexperience working at the Institute. Read more about these new facultyemeritae.

Ladd, Reidy Named Nursing Fellows

School of Nursing professors Elissa Ladd and Patricia Reidyhave been named Fellows of the American Academy ofNursing (FAAN), the profession's highest honor. Nurses arenamed Fellows for their significant contributions to health andhealth care.

School Closings During COVID-19 MayCause Decrease in Young Children'sReading Ability

A new paper co-authored by Xue Bao, a PhD in RehabilitationSciences student, and SAiL Director Dr. Tiffany Hoganexamines the connection between months of

homeschooling and a possible loss of reading ability due to school closings caused by thecoronavirus pandemic.
