The B.A.M. program provided by CityU at LWTC allows students to continue their studies on the campus where they began their coursework without having to change locations. LWTC also has agreements with a variety of other universities, providing its students with the ability to smoothly transition between a two-year technical degree and a bachelor’s degree.
“This partnership with City University of Seattle is a great utilization of our Redmond campus, and a wonderful opportunity for an additional pathway to a bachelor degree for our students,” said Dr. Sharon McGavick, LWTC president.

LWTC Forms Partnership with South Korean Ed CompanyAggreement generates a
donation of nearly $1 million in
electronics equipment
Students in Lake Washington Technical College’s electronics program will soon be training on some of the best electronics equipment in the world. LWTC has formed a new partnership with the ED Company–a worldwide electronics company based in Seoul, South Korea – which includes a donation to the college of nearly $1 million worth of electronics educational training equipment.
As part of the partnership agreement, the donated electronics equipment will be housed in a newly-renovated LWTC electronics program instructional area. The ED Company will then be able to use this area as an instructional demonstration site to showcase its equipment to potential U.S. customers.
“This is a win-win situation,” said Dr. Sharon McGavick, LWTC president. “The college will obtain state-of-the-art electronics equipment for its students to train on and the ED Company will be able to establish a presence in the U.S.”
The first installment of donated equipment is scheduled to arrive from South Korea in the spring of 2008 and will total more than $600,000. The remaining nearly $400,000 of donated equipment will be shipped from South Korea over the next three years, with more equipment to follow as the partnership evolves.
“The ED Company will initially own the equipment, but after three years the ownership of the equipment will revert to LWTC,” said McGavick. “In addition, the ED Company will continue to send us updated equipment over time, so our students will always be training on the best and most modern equipment available.”
The partnership came about through LWTC’s three-year sister-school relationship with the Korea Polytechnic Colleges (KOPO), an organization made up of 43 technical colleges in South Korea. The renovation of the LWTC electronics instruction area is scheduled to be completed in the spring of 2008, shortly before the first installment of electronics equipment arrives.
The ED Company (www.ed.co.kr) is donating six different types of electronic equipment:
• Fluid mechatronics • Mechatronics • Automation • Electricals/electronics/embedded • Communication and information technology • Measuring instrument
The official grand opening of the new electronics lab will be held on November 12, 2008.

New AAS degree in Harley-Davidson® Motorcycle MaintenanceThe distinct sound of Harley-Davidson® motorcycles
is now being heard in the classrooms at
Lake Washington Technical College (LWTC).
The college is now offering an Associate Degree in Harley-Davidson® motorcycle repair and maintenance in its Motorcycle, Marine and Power Equipment Service Technology program.
This program is one of only two motorcycle service technician Associates of Applied Science (AAS) degree programs in the country endorsed by Harley-Davidson. It is also the only Harley-Davidson supported service technician program (public or private) on the West coast.
“We created this program to help meet the rising demands for highly skilled, entry-level service technicians in the Harley-Davidson® dealer network,” said Bob Monroig, LWTC Harley-Davidson University® program instructor.
The six-quarter program offers students real-world shop experience, including setting up, diagnosing and repairing all types of Harley-Davidson® motorcycles. This type of training had previously only been available at commercial schools at a much higher cost.
“The state support for the training cost reduces student’s tuition to less than one-third the cost of the commercial schools,” said Monroig. “In addition, LWTC students will have access to the latest in diagnostic hardware and software through Harley-Davidson.”
