Author’s notes:Author’s notes:
• Several slides have been added in order to include sites recommended at the symposium session.
• They have also been added to the IPY resources doc file.
• Sites recommended at other IPY talks during the regional meeting have also been added to both files.

Site SelectionSite Selection
• Many, many sites - often specialized, and not obviously targeted to classroom use.– Need to be an polar expert to select best
search terms
• These sites represent best cumulative pools and best starting points.– List is not comprehensive– Sites are broader in scope rather than
specialized in content• Many link to specialty data and information
Page 4
Selection CriteriaSelection Criteria• Accuracy
– Reliable, free from error
• Authority– Author is known, credentials available, publisher is
reputable
• Objectivity– Information is free of bias, controversial statements
represent both sides, no hidden agenda
• Currency– Information is up-to-date, updates are identified
• Coverage– topics are thoroughly and adequately covered; breadth
of coverage is sufficient for website’s purpose
Page 5
• “comfortable” and “familiar”
• easy to use• extensive results
• but…. best resources often missed

Books for HooksBooks for Hooks
• Books can provide cross-curricular links
• Fiction and non-fiction are both useful– Biographies can link to science careers– Historical novels provide context
– Polar science can be background or settings• Topic or plot need not be strictly science
Page 28
• All resources (and more) are listed on handouts.
• Don’t forget…– December 13th is International Polar Day– 3 webinars provide further opportunities to
learn more– Discussion list connect you with presenters
