Dear Student,

Welcome to the ClipDIC workbook, which contains ten newspaper articles dealing with the same topics as the CD. Just as the CD was designed to help you understand news reports, this workbook is a collection of press cuttings with exercises aimed at improving reading comprehension. When you are familiar with the vocabulary associated with a certain topic on the CD, turn to the corresponding article in the workbook. First read the article through and try to understand the gist. The first exercise is a crossword or matching game designed to help you figure out the meanings of new words. Now read the text again; this time you should be able to understand it much better. The next exercise concentrates on a particular aspect of the article, and introduces more new words, expressions, idioms, etc.

Ezután olvassa el újra a cikket, reméljük, most jobban fogja érteni. A második feladat a cikkben elôforduló jellegzetességekhez kapcsolódik, újabb szavakat kifejezéseket, szókapcsolatokat mutat be.

Jó munkát kívánunk mindenkinek

Army blows up two IRAbombs in Surrey

The IRA last night claimed responsibility for two bombs planted on a railway track in Surrey - just 24 hours after the London-Dublin peace initiative.

Police received coded messages earlier in the day, saying that devices had been planted at Brookwood Railway Station, less than a mile from the Guards depot at Pirbright.

British army bomb disposal teams blew up the packages at the station, which was also affected by a bomb blast near Woking early on Tuesday.

Trains on the Waterloo-Southampton line were halted and Brookwood station - less than a mile from the Guards Depot at Pirbright remained closed last night.

Det Supt John Stewardson said: „The devices were not obvious and had been concealed.”

He added: „Rail services were suspended and searches were undertaken jointly by Surrey and British Transport Police officers.

„A device was found beside the track, some 250 yards from the railway station. It was made safe by military experts.

„A second device was located some 85 yards further along the track and this too was made safe by the military.”

The area around the railway station remained cordoned off for further searches and services will not be re-started until after tomorrow morning at the earliest.

An „activist” using a recognised code word called the 98FM radio station in Dublin, accusing the British authorities of ignoring warnings about two unexploded devices planted on railway track near Brookwood station.

Israel’holds PLO responsible’ for soldier’s fateDerek Brown in Jerusalem

THE Israeli government and the Palestinian Liberation Organisation, locked in the deepest crisis since they signed the peace accord 13 months ago, swapped blame and recriminations yesterday as the clock ticked towards tomorrow’s threatened execution of a kidnapped Israeli soldier by the Islamist militant organisation, Hamas.

The government dismissed claims by the PLO that the soldier was being held in Israel rather than in the autonomous zone of the Gaza Strip.

The prime minister, Yitzhak Rabin, telephoned the PLO chairman, Yasser Arafat, at his Gaza headquarters to insist that the soldier was being held in the autonomous area. He declared he held the PLO, whieh runs the self-rule administration, responsible for the man’s safety.

The Israelis have sealed their border with Gaza, denying work to nearly 30,000 Palestinians. Mr Rabin has also ordered the indefinite suspension of talks aimed at extending selfrule to the occupied West Bank.

Militant supporters of Hamas have given Israel until 9pm tomorrow to free up to 200 Palestinian prisoners, including the Hamas leader, Sheik Ahmed Yassin.

Yesterday, as the Israeli cabinet met in emergency session, Hamas released a video tape in which the frightened young soldier, Nachshon Waxman, pleaded for his life. „The members of Hamas kidnapped me and want their prisoners to be released. If not, they will kill me, „he said in Hebrew. „I ask

you to do what you can so I can get out of here alive.”

The short tape showed Corporal Waxman with his hands tied behind his back. Behind him stood a masked guard holding the soldier’s M-16 assault rife and identity card, taken when he was abducted while hitch-hiking near Ben Gurion airport, in the heart of Israel. The guard admitted he was a member of Hamas’s armed wing, Izzadin el-Kassem.

„We direct our message to Israel’s government to be patient and not to repeat the mistake which happened with Nissim Toledano,” the guard said.

Mr Toledano, a policeman, was kidnapped by Hamas in December 1992 and murdered when Mr Rabin refused to release Sheikh Yassin.

Following that killing, Mr Rabin ordered the expulsion of more than 400 Islamist activists to a bare hillside in south Lebanon, provoking a storm of international criticism.

With public opinion in Israel outraged by the latest kidnapping, there is little chance that I the government will be any more yielding now. It holds Mr Arafat’s shaky administration responsible both for Cpl Wax man’s welfare, and for curbing the Hamas militants.

The government’s anger at Mr Arafat’s failure to prevent militants using the self-rule areas as bases for operations in Israel, has been fuelled by PLO claims that Cpl Waxman is not being held in Gaza.

The prime minister’s spokesman, Oded Ben-Ami, said Mr Rabin had told the PLO chairman bluntly: „We know for sure that he is in Gaza.”

Thames body has signs of surgery

By NORMAN HAMMONDARCHAEOLOGY CORRESPONDENT

THE mysterious Dark Age burial found by archaeologists on Wednesday on the ancient Thames foreshore has yielded a fresh surprise. Pathological scrutiny of the body has disclosed a circular hole cut in the side of the skull, apparently as surgery.

The technique, known as trepanning, is believed to have been used to treat epilepsy, migraine and other severe headaches, or to cure madness and possession by evil spirits; physical symptoms and the supposed psychological affliction may well have occurred together.

Trepanation was one of the most successful operations in the ancient world. Over a thousand trepanned skulls are known, and more than half exhibit healed bone, showing that the patient

had survived surgery for at least several months.

Sometimes, trepanation has been incorrectly diagnosed. A skull bearing double holes that was exhibited at the Brighton Museum was found on examination to represent a medical condition, biparietal thinning.

Scrutiny of the new discovery, made at Bull Wharf, near Southwark Bridge, has not yet indicated whether trepanation was successful, or whether it led to the death of the individual, identified as adult. Study of the hole, which may have been made by drilling, by cutting with a blade or by scraping away bone, will show whether healing had begun. The body was sandwiched between layers of bark.

Palaces look to Disneyland

Dan Atkinson

THE KEEPERS of Britain’s royal palaces have been taking. tips on how to keep queues moving from the masters of mass entertainment, Disneyland. A team visited Mickey Mouse’s home - and Sea World in Florida - before spending Ł10 million upgrading the Tower of London, which will be „relaunched” next month. The team also visited the Louvre and Versailles. The Historic Royal Palaces Agency made it clear yesterday that, despite misunderstandings with some members of the Commons national heritage select committee earlier in the day, Disneyland had

advised only on the queueing problem and not on „slick marketing”. But agency chief executive David Beeton said: „l would not rule that out. Nor would I rule out Disney people coming to us to look at our marketing”.Continuing in terms guaranteed to make traditionalists shudder; be said: „When the agency was set up in 1989, there was a feeling that the royal palaces advertised themselves. If that was ever true, it no longer was. It’s no good just being the best - you have to let the world know.”The Mickey-at-the-Tower affair blew up after Mr Beeton appeared before the Heritage committee to speak about his

custodianship of Hampton Court, the banqueting house in Whitehall, the public parts of Kensington Palace, Kew Palace and the Tower itself. His mention of Disneyland excited Michael Fabricant, Conservative MP for Mid Staffordshire, who gained the impresslon that the most aggressive marketing techniques were about to be applied to the stuffy world of the palaces. He said later: „Disneyland is a very professional organisation and I see no incompatibility with the chief executive of the Historic Royal Palaces Agency, wbose job it is to attract visitors to these palaces, seeking the very best professional advice.”

Haunted heroSuperman was the first of the alter ego comic-book superheroes, the apparently

ordinary citizen who could dive into a phone booth and seconds later emerge as a weirdly-attired flying avenger. His supernatural powers were so overwhelming there was virtually nothing he could not do and most of the storylines wasted time finding ways to make him vulnerable. No such mistake was made when his stablemate, Batman, came on the scene the following year, 1939. Bob Kane’s hero was a hyper-rich billionaire Bruce Wayne, who as a boy had seen his parents murdered by a hold-up man. Usmg his massive wealth he spent subsequent years becoming a scientific genius and developing an extraordinary physique, in preparation for when he could go out to avenge the death of his parents.

Batman’s screen appearances began with a couple of serials in the 1940s, then a campy television series in the 1960s which led to a film version, with Adam West as the caped crusader in mauve tights fighting an array of bizarre villains. Tim Burton’s two recent films achieved monumental box-office success, and reverted to Kane’s original dark vision of his superhero. In the 1989 Batman (Sunday, Dec 19, BBC 1, 8.55pm) Michael Keaton makes his striking entrance looming on a Gotham City roof like an angel of death, ready to pounce on two muggers. He is restrained and sombre, and as Bruce Wayne dour and remote, even with Kim Basinger as a gorgeous news photographer. The Joker, played by Jack Nicholson, his chalk-white face frozen in an idiotic grinning rictus after Batman caused him to be dropped in a vat of toxic goo, is by contrast an energised villain.

Batman, unlike Superman. bleeds. He can be ambushed and doublerossed. He does not have X-ray vision, and when he flies he hangs from a Batrope. However, his equipment is formidable. About his body is the Batbelt with its weaponry and Batropes for every contingency. His Batmobile is a 20ft black Behemoth, a vehicle that will come when he calls, like a roused dog.

In Batman Returns (Sunday Dec 19, Movie Channel, 10pm; Christmas Day, 8pm) Keaton’s hero is still overshadowed, this time by Michelle Pfeiffer as Catwoman, an ambiguous enemy who is on his side when it comes to putting down the infamous tycoon Max Schreck (Nosferatu’s name) played by Christopher Walken, but teamed in infamy with the Penguin, a flipper-handed mutant (Danny DeVito). Again the sets are an astounding blend of gothic and art deco, and Danny Elfman’s haunting score adds to the sinister atmosphere. In both films there is a motif of cruelty and callousness: these are not children’s fantasy adventures, but fables exposing the neuroses and horrors of the modern urban world, executed with dazzling style.

Surreal paintings in London debut stealthe show for Salvador Dali, Spain’s

mercurial master of self-publicityMike EllisonArts Correspondent

PAINTINGS by Salvador Dali, the surrealist whose capacity for scandal, sensation and self-publicity all but eclillsed his art, go on show in Britain for the first time this week.Dali, The Early Years, runs at the Hayward Gallery in London for three months from Thursday. It includes paintings and drawings from the Dali museum in St Petersburg, Florida, which has not lent works for 10 years. The Florida collection, which has 250,000 visitors a year, was put together by A. Reynolds Morse, a plastics magnate whose family fortune stemmed from silver rnining in Colorado.Morsse was a friend of Dali, who died in 1989 at the age of 84.Joan Krops, curator of the St Petersburg Museum, said: „He was just very against loaning so for us to lend 10

paintings and drawings shows the importance of the exhibition to Dali scholarship.”The Hayward exhibition of more than 50 paintings and 50 drawings covers the years to his first exhibition in Paris in 1929 and his friendships, with the film maker Luis Bunuel and the poet Federico Garcia Lorca.By this time the rogue with the waxed moustache, who was to make images like the lilmp watches in The Persistence Of Memory among the century’s most instantly recognisable, had experimented with styles ranging across neo-impressionism, symbolism, cubism and futurism. It was not until the neurotic son of a rich Catalan joined the surrealists, however, that the was to make his image a major part of his act, much of it under the guidance of his wife, Gala, who had been married to the poet Paul Eluard.Later, while his wife entertained young men, Dali

took his pleasure by organising orgies or „erotic masses” featuring male and female models, transsexuals and circus performers.Freud, who met the artist in 1938, had his mind changed by Dali’s „handpainted dream photographs”. He wrote: „Until now I have been inclined to regard the surrealists as complete fools. That young Spaniard, with his candid, fanatical eyes and his undeniable technical mastery, has changed my estimate.”Dali developed his cult by giving a lecture at the London surrealist exhibition of 1936 wearing a diving suit, which meant that his voice could not be heard and soon he could barely breathe. Twentty years later he turned up at the Sorbonne in a while Rolls-Royce full of cauliflowers.André Breton, author of Surrealist Manifesto, was not amused and Dali was expelled from the group.

Bear lovers go hungryFINISH animal-lovers are

launching a campaign urging European businessmen and tourists to boycott restaurants which serve bear meat.

The Helsinki-based animal protection agency, Animalia, is circulating addresses of the offending restaurans in the hope that, faced with international dissapoval, they will stop dishing up bear steaks and stew.

Bear is one the most sought-after delicacies in Finland, available at the most exclusive eating houses, most commonly those which specialise in Russian cuisine.

Animalia’s campaign is part of a drive to have brown bear hunting in Finland banned. The group wants foreign businessmen to tell their hosts only to take them to bear-frendly restanrants.

Animalia wants quotas introducedand shooting licences granted only on an individual basis and in exceptional cases.

Although there are only 500 bears left roaming the northern forests, the Finnish government has refused to ratify fully the Berne convention on their protection and they can be shot freely in the lenghty hunting season.

Paivi Viinikainen Roquist, executive director of Animalia, says it is hard to break the macho image attached to bear hunting. „It is still a very masculine thing to go out and hunt bears and wolves”, he said.

„Public opinion does not condemn it like in central Europe or Sweden. A poll some time ago asked young people what was the most masculine thing they could do and the reply was: to go out and hunt large carnivores.”

A particular problem is that the hunting season occures during the spring. Hunters lie in wait for the bears as they emerge from their dens after hibernation and ambush them while they are still sleepy.

Aircraft put flamingoes to flightHOUSANDS of flamingoes breeding in a Spanish nature reserve for

the first time in centuries have abandoned their nests after being upset by fire-fighting aircraft, writes Michael Bond. The birds fled the Ebro Delta in northeast Spain after a training mission by the National Institute for Nature Conservation, involving scooping up water from the delta.

T

Alberto Martinez, director of the Ebro Delta national park, said the pilots had not been told that it was a conservation area. He said: „One plane made two low-flying swoops over the nests. The first time the flamingoes flew off but returned. After the second pass they abandoned their nests for good, and within hours the eggs were attacked by gulls.”

Flamingoes had not nested in the delta since the 16th century. The birds usually breed in Malaga and the Camargue, but this year drought forced more than 2,000 birds to nest elsewhere. „We have been trying to get flamingoes to nest here for years,” said Martinez. „Some have built nests, but they have never before laid eggs. This year there were more than 250 nests and dozens with eggs.”Britain’s Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) is launching a conservation campaign, amid fears that one of the most important , wetlands in the Mediterranean area is being permanently damaged. It says, there are too many competing authorities, and that the park is threatened by intensive agriculture and building developments.

French proposal for ‘whale sanctuary’inAntarctic wins growing support

Paul BrownEnvironment Correspondent

LANS to turn the Antarctic into a whale sanctuary

and halt Japanese plans to resume commercial whaling advanced at the weekend after a meeting of 24 countries in Norfolk Island, Australia.

P

Ten states, including Britain and the United States, now support a French motion to the May 24 meeting of the International Whaling Commission (IWC) in Mexico demanding a whale sanctuary south of 40 degrees. This takes in a huge swath of ocean including the South Atlantic and South Pacific as well as the Southern Ocean. The Russian position on resumption of whaling has been uncertain, but at the week-long

Norfolk Island meeting the delegation gave wholehearted support to the sanctuary. If the proposal is passed it will protect 90 per cent of whales from hunting.Only Norway and Japan actively want to resume hunting, but four Caribbean countries Grenada, St Lucia, Dominica, and St Vincent and the Grenadines - all voted with Tokyo at the meeting. They all receive large scale Japanese aid.In order to impose the sanctuary against the opposition of Norway, Japan and their four Caribbean allies, the 10 proposing states need the support of another eight to obtain the required three-quarters majority of those voting. Only 36 IWC member countries are sufficiently up to date with their subscriptions

to vote at the moment, so the outcome will be tight. Some countries may abstain, but this will effectively aid the Japanese.Countries such as Chile and Argentina have reservations about the size of the sanctuary, because it infringes on their 200-mile territorial waters. Some compromise is likely to be offered by the French to get their support. The position of 11 countries which did not attend the Norfolk Island meeting remains unknown, and it is open to others to join before the crucial May meeting. Sidney Holt, a longtime supporter of the sanctuary proposal, representing the World Conservation Union in the meeting, said: „The voting will be very tight. There is everything to play for.”

Import ban on pigs sought as disease strikes two farmas

By MICHAEL HORNSBY AGRICULTURE CORRESPONDENT

GOVERNMENT veterinary officials are investigating what they fear may be the first outbreak in Britain of an infectious pig disease that has spread across northern Europe in recent months, killing more than 4,000 animals. Two pig farms on Humberside have been served with restriction orders prohibiting movement of animals to or from their premises.Pig industry spokesmen said that until more was known about the disease the agriculture ministry should ban imports of all live pigs, consider a ban on fresh or lightlycured pork coming from infected countries and tighten hygiene controls on vehicles visiting the Contient that might act as carriers. The condition, called mystery productive syndrome or more pularly „blue ear disease”, was first detected in Germany towards end of last year and has spread to The Netherlands and Belgium. Affected sows go off their food, develop influenza-like symptoms and abort. Piglets are born dead or die before they are weaned. Ears and other extremities may show a bluish tinge, and the mortality rate among piglets can be as high as 40 per cent. After a few weeks pigs in an infected herd usually become immune to further outbreaks. There is so far no clue to what causes the syndrome or how it spreads. The symptoms resemble those of a similarly mysterious condition that has affected American pig herds for about four years. Some experts think the disease may spread in moisture droplets in the air and is probably caused by a virus.Keith Meldrum, the chief veterinary officer, said yesterday there was a distinct possibility

that the illness of the Humberside pigs was the same as that found on mainland Europe.„There is no diagnostic test,” he said. „All we can do is look at all other possible causes of this condition and eliminate them one by one. If, after two or three weeks of detailed investigation, we find no other cause, then we might conclude that the condition is similar, if not identical, to that found in Europe.”Grenville Welsh, chief executive of the British Fig Association, said: „Until the government can give us a categorical assurance that the infection cannot be carried in fresh or lightly-cured pork, which they cannot do at the moment, imports of these products should be banned. After all, we have had to accept restrictions on our exports of beef because of BSE [bovine spongiform encephalopathy]. „Mr Welsh said there was concern that even though Britain did not import live pigs from Germany, The Netherlands or Belgium, infection might be channelled indirectly through Denmark, which has a land border with Germany and exports pigs to this country.„We are also pressing the government to tighten controls on vehicles transporting livestock to the infected areas. There is a danger that the infection could be brought back on the lorries or the clothes of the drivers, „he said.Mr Meldrum said there was no evidence of any kind that MRS could be carried in pigmeat or pose a risk to humans who ate it, and the government had no plans to restrict imports. The ministry last night declined to identify the two farms. „They are understood to have 200 sows each, reared in intensive indoor conditions.
