Office of the President
I It is July already and how much have you
gotten to drive your Corvette?
I don’t need to tell you just how much fun these cars are
to drive. I look forward to taking ours to the National
Corvette Convention in New Orleans Louisiana this
month. It will be great to be there with so many other
Corvette enthusiasts. Getting the chance to take it on the
open road and then on the drag strip when we get there.
To see the other cars compete in the other various types
of competition will be interesting as well.
Competition is always fun, and it is especially fun when you win. Cornhusker Corvette Club will be
receiving the National Council of Corvette Clubs Points Championship for 2017! We have won this
Championship 11 other times. Starting in 1978 – 1989 – 1999 – 2008 – 2009 – 2011 – 2012 – 2013 -2014
-2015 – 2016 and now 2017. This will make 7 times in a row since 2011.
These points are accumulated by members of the club participating in sanctioned events throughout the
year. Auto cross – drag racing – car shows and even Funkhanas. We compete amongst ourselves, with
other clubs and even on a national level. This creates a lot of opportunities to drive our cars and enjoy
the thrill.
J.B. tells me we should be soundly in first place and tracking a 13th National Championship by the August
meeting.
This club is a winner and all the members get to be a part of the winning!
I will be bringing the National Council of Corvette Clubs Points Championship trophy home.
We will be celebrating this at our next General Meeting on August 16th 2018!
Be there and be a part of the CELEBRATION!
Now get out there and drive that Corvette !
Your President
Kevin Reit

From the Governor’s desk…
Summer is definitely upon us, but that didn’t stop a fun weekend the 7th and 8th
of July at Lincoln Airpark. Saturday Cornhusker Corvette Club had 27 racers and
8 workers present and Sunday saw 23 racers and 6 workers. The racer numbers
are fantastic, but we really need help with workers on these weekends to make
them a success.
As of today we are in first place in the nation by over 2,500 points. But, this can
only be maintained with our sanctioned participation of racers and workers. Please come out for our
future events and help out, we have opportunities for corner workers, starting grid managers, cooks,
servers, tech inspection help, and many other things that have to be done to make events a success.
There is no need to work a corner the whole day if we have several there to help us, thank you in
advance. We need the support of the entire club to maintain number one in the nation.
As the racers take the next couple weeks off, there are still several activities planned. Of course the
NCCC convention is up and running but locally, we have Hot Summer Nights in Sioux Falls on 7/18,
Gregg Young Car show on 7/21, the Gretna Parade on 7/28 and then drag racing on 7/29 at Onawa
and a meet and greet on 7/31. Lots to do this month, come out and enjoy.
Come on out and join the action whether it be racing, working, car shows or cruises, as summer heats
up, so does the Cornhusker Corvette Club always with something for everyone.

Page 11

New Seat Covers 2000 Corvette
This past December I decided I wanted a new look for my 2000 Torch
Red Corvette, something other than black. I researched the web for the
best quality and colors of seat covers. After visiting many websites, I
decided on Interior Innovations who had the best quality Genuine
Leather seat covers I was looking for. I also decided that since my car
was almost 18 years old I should replace the seat foam. Never installing
seat covers before I thought it best to look for a video online to help me
through the installation. After discussing my plans with a few members,
I was pleased to find out that Bill Cashell knew where find the video,
Corvette Central. He replaced his seat covers a few months earlier.
All though the video said each seat could be done in 3 to 4 hours I found it to more like 5 to
6 hours per seat. I chose to use new foam on the seats instead of existing factory foam that
came with the seats. As I followed in instructions on taking the seats apart I found the bottom
seat foam to be in the worst shape as well as the side panels of the back part of the seat.
After removal of everything from the seat down to the frame I started re-assembly. I
proceeded by first installing the new foam which I found to be more
firm than the old factory foam, which then became a problem moving
forward when installing the actual seat covers. Once the seat foam was
attached to the seat frame I proceeded to install the back seat covers
which I found to be quite a challenge because of the firmness of the
new foam. I spent 2-3 hours working the leather down the new foam
using a heat gun to soften the leather, my wife even had to help as
closing the top zipper was a real challenge to complete due to the
extremely tight fit. If my original foam was in decent shape I would
have gone back and used it but since it was torn in so many places it
would have looked terrible with the new seats. The insert back piece
went on much easier but attaching it to the back frame was a challenge
because the new foam did not give as much when trying to attach with
the plastic pens. Doing the bottom seat wasn’t as difficult since I was able to use more
leverage to slide it on. After attaching everything to the metal frame the seats turned out
great and with two tone color, torch red and black really dressed up my car. In closing if
you decided to do this, if at all possible, use the original back seat foam as it will make your
life much easier when re- installing. If you need help or have questions let me know.

Haste Makes Waits
By Allen H. Sohl
Recently I took Palmer to breakfast in my 1991 ZR-1. When we tried to leave the restaurant parking lot, I
turned the ignition key, and nothing happened! The instrument panel lights did not dim, and there was
no sound. I made certain that the clutch pedal was fully depressed, and I turned the key several times
without success. I tried Palmer’s key, and it didn’t work either. Panic was setting in!
Palmer called AAA, and a tow truck was on the way, with instructions to take my Corvette to R&G Service
Center. After about 30 minutes, I made one last desperate effort to start the engine. One twist of the
key, and the engine roared to life! Palmer called AAA and cancelled the tow, with apologies.
It was a hot day, and Palmer was not pleased. Needless to say, I was perplexed. I knew I had to figure
this thing out, or she would never ride with me in my Vette again. I searched the Internet, and eventually
I concluded that I was probably a victim of the notorious VATS (Vehicle Anti-Theft System). VATS (aka
PassKey) was used by GM in later model C4 Corvettes and some early C5s (as well as in several other GM
products).
VATS was intended to prevent theft or unauthorized use of a Corvette by providing the owner with a
special ignition key that must be present in order to engage the starter and pulse the fuel injectors. The
ignition key has an embedded pellet resistor with one of 15 values. The matching resistance value is
stored in an EPROM in the VATS decoder module. No match, no start.
Page 13
Page | 13 July 2018
I called Gordon Killebrew, who wrote much of the C4 technical manual and is the acknowledged expert
on C4 troubleshooting. He confirmed my conclusion and suggested several approaches to the problem,
from reading ECM error codes to identify the problem to bypassing the VATS to ensure reliable starting
(but sacrificing security) in the future.
NOTE: Starting problems like mine are common enough that there are kits available to bypass
VATS. You must know the value of the resistor in your ignition key if you decide to order a kit.
While I was plowing through the Corvette blogs on the Internet, I came across a marvelous article on
starting problems written by Marc Haibeck, one of the few remaining LT5 engine tuners. It turns out that
the VATS decoder needs time to “read” the value of the resistor correctly. If you turn the ignition key
from the ON position to the START position too quickly, the resistance reading will be wrong, and the
starter will be disabled for several minutes. Moreover, the lockout time delay is extended each time you
retry. This explains why my car was disabled for nearly half an hour while I tried repeatedly to start it.
Rob Bohl, Service Manager at R&G Service Center, notes that he had the same problem with a 1998
Chevrolet vehicle he owned.
If your car has VATS, a brief pause before cranking the engine should ensure reliable starting. However,
VATS is fairly complicated (See diagram), and there are other possible starting problems, such as dirt on
the resistor pellet, a defective switch on the clutch pedal, a bad ignition lock tumbler, or fatigued wiring.

Back to School By Bill Cashell
Ah….the wonderful feeling of Spring! Trees begin to leaf out, flowers bloom, and people rush out to enjoy the
warm weather. For many members of CCC, it is time to think about the upcoming racing season.
Last May, Don Don Angeroth and many members of CCC put on their annual driving school. If you haven’t
attended, it is a chance to learn more about driving your Corvette and to learn about the racing scene. This year
included training on being a corner worker and how to “tech” cars for sanctioned events.
Don was joined by a host of members including Gene and Kathy
Gau, Jon Brown, Pete Fagan, P.L. Pilger, J.B, Benedict, Howard
Renshaw, Nick Gau, George and Carolyn Horst, Linda Adams,
Chris Tooker, Ray Kennedy and probably a few others I am
missing. It is truly a team effort to put this on and it includes
timing lights and a full course that was set up at the Mall of the
Bluffs.
Somehow Mother Nature ignored the fact that it is supposed to
be wam and pleasant in mid May. The temperature started in the high 40’s but warmed up as the day want on
(probably because of the hot driving).
Drawing on his experience as a high school teacher, Don proved to be an excellent instructor. He explained every
detail about driving, wearing a helmet, navigating pylons and the best kind of 4-letter words to use when you miss
the pylons (or when you hit them).
P.L. and J.B. (real names are not used because they
are both in the witness protection program),
explained what to look for in a helmet and how to
fit it for comfort. They also explained how to Tech a
car before racing and other events.
Gene showed the correct method for jacking up a
Corvette with a floor jack and Don told us how to
inspect the tires and wheels. In case you are not
familiar. Jacking up a Corvette requires a round
insert called a “puck”. Unfortunately; the puck got
stuck in our car when it was jacked up. You can probably imagine how many jokes can come out of a “stuck puck”.
Page 15
Page | 15 July 2018
Then, Don walked us through the course, step by step and explained how to navigate the pylons. Some people
just enjoyed the balmy spring weather.
Finally, it was time to actually get out and race around the course. Pete lined the cars up and started them off.
Since they were all novices, he started them at the handicap spot.
I told Kathy to burn out as much as she wanted because we were due for new tires.
Big mistake!
We were all treated to lunch before more attempts to damage our cars. Thanks to
Ray Kennedy for being a great example of skilled driving.
If you have never attend this event, I would highly recommend you put it on your list
for next year.

Around the Tower and Up Your Strip
Well, having been a CCC member for 40+ years, leaves me with some responsibility to share a little
history with our latest membership. In the 60s and 70s, we were nationally noted for…well, let’s just say
we were notorious and leave it at that. Going into the ‘80s and through the 90s we became THE drag
racing club in NCCC. So, I will pass along a little CCC ¼ mile drag racing history and note how that
program has changed over the years.
To give you an idea of how dominate this club was for a quarter of a mile, thirty-seven different CCC
members did or do hold a national record in at least one class. My guess is that the number two club
would probably be from Texas or Oklahoma and they can count maybe six or seven. CCC members have
set some NCCC records in the older car classes that will literally never be broken.
How did this happen? Well, by 1980 we had been asked to “never return” by most of the motels in the
West Region and we decided we needed to go the straight and narrow. A drag strip is straight and
relatively narrow. Now realize that old corvettes were still plentiful and did not cost a year’s salary.
And, even AA members could work on them with the simplest of tools. For example, I paid $400 for the
’59 that I turned into my DPB drag car.
Now don’t get me wrong – it took some serious effort and testing to build a record setting car back then.
Not only did we have to compete against the rest of NCCC, we had to compete against each other in
some cases. Here are some examples of the extremes we took to legally lighten a Group II car. Wally
Wilson removed the frame from his ’73 and replaced it with a lighter frame from a ’81 (thinner metal).
While the body was off, they rolled it on its side and Patty Wilson spent hours scraping the undercoating
off the underside of the body to, you guessed it, make the car weigh less. We cut the ends off of any
bolts that extended through the nuts. Hey, do you know how heavy a bucket of bolts is. In Group II, one
can legally mix and match engine parts within the class. Oh we did some serious mixing and matching.
As if making a car run under a record wasn’t tedious enough, we faced the dreaded “teardown”. Back
then, NCCC required that we pull the intake manifold and one cylinder head so that everything could be
measured. That was normally done the night of the race or the next day. One time, CCC had seven cars
to take apart and the teardown took two days, about a dozen guys, and several cases (ok, so we hadn’t
totally given up drinking).
Along come the C5s and C6s and C whatever they are now. Trust me, one would have to be even crazier
than we were to not only modify these late models but to also send them through the old invasive strip
search. So, NCCC came up with a new teardown procedure that requires very little disassembly. The
problem is, the newest models have now out grown the NCCC equipment and the tech crew training.
Not sure what we will do in the future as far as teardown (even the word “teardown” is not applicable
anymore).
So this brings us to our 1/8 mile drags in Onawa, Iowa, on Sunday July 29th. One of the events is referred
to as Record Drags where the cars are paired up by class and they run heads up just like they did when
drag racing was started in the USA in the 1950s. First one to the finish line is the winner unless that
Page 17
Page | 17 July 2018
person leaves before the green light. Pretty simple. NCCC has now established class records for 1/8
mile under the hope that 1/8 mile tracks are more affordable and thus more clubs will host drag races.
The most ¼ mile NCCC drags held each year now is maybe one in the West Region (that would be when
we do it), two in the Southwest Region, and one at Convention. That sucks. Anyway, should someone
set a record at this event with a late model car, trust me, we will not take it apart. You can drive the car
home. We will simply have to deal with the NCCC competition officers if that happens.
Let’s forget record drags for a moment because that is only one of the four events that day. Our first
drag event on the 29th, will be Matching Times. You will get three runs and the object is to end up with
two runs with times that match. It makes no difference who gets to the finish line first, it makes no
difference how fast your car is, it makes no difference how good of a light you cut (you can even red
light), it is simply how consistent you are. Could not get easier. Now this event also accomplishes a
couple of other things needed later in the day. One, you find out what your car runs in the 1/8 mile so
you know what time to “dial in” for the bracket drag events. It also gives you practice driving and
practice working the starting light. In addition to that event and the class drag event, there will be two
bracket events. Like the matching times event, it does not make any difference how fast your car is.
None. But, unlike the MT event, it does make a difference how good you are at judging the starting light
and how close you can come to leaving when the green light comes on. Bottom line is this. Forget the
fire and smoke and crashes and blown engines you see on TV. Our program is closer to quickly leaving a
city stop light than what you see at NHRA events. I would also venture to say that how we drag race
these days is easier on the cars than the speed events we run.
Finally, this will be the only NCCC drag race in the West Region this year and the only 1/8 mile in the
nation. Which means this is a once in a year opportunity that is only an hour away from Omaha. If for
no other reason, you will be able to tell your kids or grandkids that you, yes you, are a drag racer. They
don’t need to know that you didn’t put on drag slicks and do a smokie burnout in the water box. We will
discuss this event at the July meeting and hopefully have time to answer questions. If you have
questions now, please call or text me and I will try to answer them. Again, if you have never drag raced,
this program is for you. Do not miss this chance.

Tired Corvette By Bill Cashell
If you check the list of CCC contributors (listed in the Newsletter and website), you may notice a new addition –
Discount Tires. With a name that has “Discount” in it, you may think this is not the best place to get new tires for
a Corvette. It seems like we should go to someplace like “Indy 500 Tire Palace”, or “Sports Car Tire Emporium”.
Discount Tires sounds like a place you take a place you take your Yugo for retread tires.
If you have never been there, prepare to be impressed. This was not my first trip there. In the last year we have
used them to get new tires for our Ford Van, boat trailer and our 1968 Karman Ghia (we couldn’t find them
anywhere else). They can get specialty tires and order almost any brand. The prices are better than Sam’s and
Costco (where I used to shop for tires) and the service has been fantastic every time I have been there.
Of course, trusting your prize Corvette is a different story, right? I was greeted by Lee, the shop supervisor who is
a US Navy veteran. We exchanged stories as he told me about serving on a submarine (I get claustrophobia just
thinking about it).
Jeff and Matt teamed up to get the tires on in short order. It was obvious that they have worked on Corvettes and
specialty cars before and understand our love for our “babies”. There was no putting this car on a rack. They
jacked up the back with floor jacks and each took at side. They were extremely careful with the wheels and even
shined them after putting them back on. Then they jacked up the front and together they put on the fronts the
same way. The front tires are “35 series” tires (275/35R18) and not every shop is equipped to put on low profile
times. A friend at Firestone told me they can’t do them and they refer people to Discount Tires.
I was out in 45 minutes and they were so careful with our car. The prices were great and the service even better.
I have heard other club member tell about how happy they were with Discount Tires. For me, it is my “go to”
place for tires. I am happy to have them as a contributor.

Fast Cars and Fast Draw?
As Corvette owners we certainly like our Corvettes and the feeling
that comes with driving them, knowing that we have plenty of
horsepower under the hood. But for those of you who enjoy
shooting sports, (both men and women) have you every heard of or
considered getting involved in another activity that also involves
speed? Welcome to Cowboy Fast Draw!
Cowboy Fast Draw clubs are fairly new. The sport itself was
going on in the 1980s, but very few people knew anything about
it. The Cowboy Fast Draw Association was officially created in
2002 in Deadwood South Dakota. The purpose of the
organization was to provide a jump-start for the sport and make
people aware of how fun it is. Today there are over 5500 CFDA
members and over 70 CFDA clubs across the USA.
The most noteworthy things about Cowboy Fast Draw is that the sport is extremely safe and once you have the gun
and holster it costs very little to participate. It is actually less than 6 cents per shot to shoot. We shoot real 45 caliber
single action 1873 replica Colt revolvers at 24” steel targets which are 21’ from the shooting line. But the safe and
fun part of shooting is that we are shooting wax bullets! The cartridges we use are actual 45 caliber cartridges, and
we insert by hand a wax plug, and then we drop a shotgun 209 primer in the back end of the cartridge. When the
gun is fired the primer launches the wax bullet at approximately 750 to 850 foot per second toward the target.
Each target has a light in the middle. As you are standing at the
firing line the challenge as the name implies, is to draw and fire as
quickly as possible when the light in the middle of the target lights
up. You then immediately re-holster the gun. All shooters times are
displayed directly above the target on an electronic display. If you
miss the target no time is displayed. Each round of shooting
consists of 5 shots at the target. Shooters are paired together to see
who is the fastest.
Just over a year ago a friend of mine Nebraska Bob and I decided to start a club in the Omaha/Council Bluffs and
surrounding area. We started the club because there were no existing clubs anywhere near Omaha. The club name
is The River City Gunslingers. We now have 20 founding members and continue to increase membership. Once
you join the club you come up with an alias. Mine is “The Deuce” and Karen’s is “Kalamity Karen”. Members are
also encouraged to wear a cowboy hat, boots and a western shirt but it is not required. Like the Cornhusker
Corvette Club the fun is spending time with other RCG members and enjoying
the activity! Because we shoot indoors this is a year round activity. Men, Women
and young adults 12 and older are eligible to become members.
We started out shooting in a small bay of a strip mall. We had to setup and take
down the target system each time we practiced. Starting in November we moved
to CCC member Randy Williams “Magnum is his alias” farm near the Honey
Creek Iowa exit off of I-29. We now have a custom-built 6-lane electronic target
system, tables, chairs, ventilation system and more. CCC member Don Angeroth
“JW” is also a member of the River City Gunslingers club! In all honesty you
will not find a nicer indoors Cowboy Fast Draw setup anywhere in the Midwest.
Once you try this you will probably enjoy it as much as we do!

We practice the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of each month from
6pm to 8pm. Anyone interested in trying Cowboy Fast Draw
is invited to visit us. We will furnish the gun, holster and
ammunition for free. We look forward to seeing you! If you
have any questions please feel free to contact me.

Summer Festival 2018
The 2018 Summer Festival is rapidly approaching. My intent for this year is to ensure we have something fun for
everyone: Valve Cover Racing, Car show, Rallye, Racing, and a Golf Tournament. Of course some of it is centered
around our favorite past time…No, not Corvettes, I’m talking about FOOD of course.
Fri, 31 Aug: We’ll kick it off with a party at the Lucky Duck Garage. That’s Gene and Kathy Gau’s home for
those who aren’t already familiar (10409 36th St, Bellevue). For those that are racing, bring your car for tech and
get it done early. Of course, you are always welcome to tech at RPM on Sat morning. Perry is graciously running
the Valve Cover Racing that night so get those valve cover cars tuned up. There will be a chilli cookoff. I know it
may seem a little hot still for that so consider making a sweet chili vice a spicy one. The rest of dinner will be pot
luck so please contribute to dinner by bringing one of the following items: Last names beginning in A-I = Salad,
J-R = Dessert, S-Z = Side Dish. You might also want to bring a lawn chair to sit in.
Sat, 1 Sep: We’ll start the low speed racing with tech at 0830 (that’s 830am for the non-military types) at Race
Park of the Midlands (RPM) at 19340 Jessup Ave. Pacific Junction, IA 51561. After racing is over we’ll rally at
Quaker Steak & Lube (3320 Mid America Dr, Council Bluffs, IA 51501) at 6pm. We are booked for 60 members
in the room with the Corvette hanging on the wall naturally and it’s pay as you go. This was a fun dinner last year
so I’m expecting a good show again this year.
Sun, 2 Sep: Another day of racing, but this day will be high speed. Tech starts at 830am. Remember to review the
rules for highspeed and if you are new, you will have to have completed 10 low speed events over three weekends
to earn a high-speed license. (See Don Angeroth with any questions)
For those not interested in racing, there is a Par 3, 18-hole golf tournament at Papio Greens Golf Course (11050 S
66th St Papillion, NE). You can only bring 3 clubs so choose wisely. I recommend a putter for starters and that
leaves you with 2 more. No alcohol is allowed and Lunch is not included so you might consider eating ahead of
time.
Mon, 3 Sep: We will start the day with a Car Show at Madonna Rehab Facility near Village Point (17500 Burke
St, Omaha, NE). The car show starts at 10am and includes lunch. (Jersey Mike’s Subs) Gene Gau has designed a
great Rallye route for us this year that I think you will enjoy. As a side note, lunch is NOT included as part of the
Rallye, rather as part of the car show. The Rallye will finish up with an early afternoon dinner/late lunch at one of
our contributors.
So, come on out and enjoy the weekend. I’m looking forward to seeing everyone out there.
