Swallow FactsSwallows are about the size of a lady’s
hand if you include their wings.
They have dark glossy blue backs, red throats, pale under-parts and long,
distinctive tail streamers.
They eat flying insects.
Swallows build their nests on small ledges in barns or out-buildings. They like dark corners and little nooks in the walls.
British swallows migrate – they fly all the way to South Africa for the winter. They cover 200 miles a day and can fly (at their fastest) at the speed a car goes when in town.
They fly in the day and sleep at night. They do not eat much whilst migrating.
