Headmaster NAPLAN Earlier this year students in Years 3, 5 and 7 sat the annual National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) tests. The test results have now been received from the VCAA and will be posted today to parents. These reports show the performance of individual students in each area assessed compared with the National mean and median. Whilst this is useful information for students on one level, the results only report on one performance on one set of tests. It is not possible to measure the ability of a student in this way, and the tests need to be read within the context of our recent semester reports and your son’s progress in many different areas. Nevertheless, as a whole the overall results are again strong. More importantly, as we can now begin to track individual students over a number of years of this testing, it is evident that our students are growing in the development of their skills over time – there is significant improvement, for example in the Year 9 results when compared to those individual results when the boys were in Year 7 two years ago. This suggests that wherever a student may lie in terms of academic performance, our teachers are able to work with them and help them to grow over time. We are proud of the high standards we set and encourage our students to meet the challenges our curriculum provides. If you have any questions relating to NAPLAN, or wish to discuss your son’s performance once the test results have been received, please feel free to contact your son’s Head of School, or our Director of Teaching and Learning, Mr John Tuckfield, on 9835 1777. Generations Photo We would like to take a Generations Photo of all current boys with relatives (Grandfather, Father, Uncle, Brother) who are an Old Boy of Camberwell Grammar School on Friday 1 September 2017 at 8.10am. The photo will be taken on the foyer steps of the Performing Arts Centre, toward the end of the Junior School Father’s Day Breakfast. The photo will feature in a spread in the next edition of Spectemur. If you would like to participate in this photo, please ensure current students and their Old Boy relatives are in the foyer of the Performing Arts Centre by 8.00am. RSPCA Cupcake Day Thank you to our school families, students and staff who generously joined in and baked a delicious array of cupcakes for last Monday’s fund raising event. The cupcakes sold out quickly, and we raised a fantastic $593.00, which will be donated to the RSPCA to support adoption centres and shelters in the attempt to prevent animal cruelty. Paul Hicks, Headmaster Middle School House Cross Country Well done to all those who participated in yesterday’s House Cross Country at Westerfolds Park. DebatingLast Wednesday our Year 7 and 8 teams participated in Round 1 of the DAV Junior Competition. Debating the topic “That cameras should be installed in all public places”, seven out of our eight teams were successful on the night. This was an excellent start to what is a great debating experience for all involved.

NAPLANYou will soon receive your son’s NAPLAN results from the testing conducted earlier this year. The results provide a ‘snapshot’ of your son’s progress in certain elements of literacy and numeracy and are not a representation of his overall ability. If you would like to discuss your son’s results, please contact Mr Scott Wyatt at [email protected].

Junior School MusicWhat a splendid week of music-making this has been! Last Friday, members of the Chamber Singers walked to The Mews Aged Care residence to present an afternoon concert. They sang beautifully and several boys performed instrumental solos. It was excellent to see the boys sharing their love of music with the residents, who joined them in the community singing. Congratulations to the Chamber Singers for being such good-hearted and kind ambassadors for our school. On Wednesday evening, thirty young musicians entertained their parents, teachers and fellow students with solo performances at the Term 3 Soiree. From Pre-Prep to Year 5, each performer played with polish and confidence that can only come with plenty of concentrated practice. It was an excellent evening of personal achievement for each of the boys and we congratulate them on their courage and their musical skill.Coming up is the School Concert on Wednesday 6 September when the Year 2/3 Superstars, Junior School Orchestra, Junior School Choir and the Chamber Singers will perform in the first section of the concert at 6.00pm. They are enjoying preparing their items for your enjoyment at this important event so make sure you have booked your tickets. Our Music Office has received requests from many families to book additional tickets. There are a few rows remaining in both concerts, and we are delighted to release all further seats with no restrictions. The link for bookings is: www.trybooking.com/RHJE

SportAnother great round of Spring Sport. Water polo in our pool is just sensational and the students are enjoying every minute. If you would like a Camberwell Keep Cup for $10, while you enjoy watching the water polo, then please see Friends of Aquatics at the canteen just outside the entrance to the pool. You will be supporting raising funds for disadvantaged communities around the world.

The Soccer presentation night was a hit with Mr Dean Bouzanis from Melbourne City as our guest speaker. Thanks to Friends of Soccer for organising the evening. The Under 13 Camberwell Wasps Baseball Team has made it through to the Grand Final of the Victorian Winter Baseball League. They play Port Melbourne in the Grand Final this Saturday 26 August at Knox Diamond at 9.00am. This team consists of students new to the game of Baseball this season, and to make the Grand Final in their first season is a tremendous effort. Good luck to all.

Sport ReportRound 2 of the AGSV Athletics season was held on Saturday in a mixture of both rain and pleasant conditions at Coburg. A moderate, but hardy group of CGS athletes made the journey north and many made the most of the opportunity. At Under 13, Lucas Waycott and Jonathan Le (both Year 7) led the way in the sprints, whilst Nick Robinson (Year 8) topped the Under 14s with another sub-13 second 100m race. Connor Assauw (Year 8) posted another personal best in the high jump, with his 1.68m closing in on a long-standing School record. At the Open age group, Captain Matthew James (Year 12) looked strong over 100m, whilst Oliver Wong’s (Year 12) hard work in high jump is beginning to pay dividends once again. Will Bartram (Year 11) made a welcome return with confidence boosting runs over 100m, 200m and 400m events. Evergreen Adrian Xu (Year 12) posted a strong 800m and a personal best over 400m, whilst the determination of Tom Lombardi (Year 11) was evident as he fought hard over 3000m and 800m.Taran Laurence (Year 9) posted the fastest 800m time of the day at 2:12 and at Under 15, Lachlan Waycott (Year 9) made a pleasing return to form, whilst Emmanuel Yassa (Year 8) worked hard over 400m, 800m and 1500m. Finally, the performance of the day came from Tom Bowers (Year 9), whose 10.02 effort over 3000m is the fastest by any CGS runner this season, and especially pleasing given that he is generally competing against much older athletes.

LibraryBook Week in the Weickhardt LibraryCartooning and Manga Workshop Book Week activities commenced in the Weickhardt Library with a Cartooning and Manga Workshop led by artists, Kenny and Lea, from ‘Drawingwithus’. After a brief introduction to Manga and Anime by Kenny, the pair demonstrated how to create the faces and expressions of a variety of characters. Their audience enthusiastically took up the challenge, applying themselves to the task of developing faces in their own style, the silence of concentration only occasionally broken by ripples of laughter and exclamations of delight at Kenny’s illustrations. Blokes’ Book BreakfastGetting up early on a pre-spring morning was certainly made worthwhile by our guest speaker, Ms Emma Viskic. Emma talked to her captive audience of boys, dads, friends and staff about the things that influenced her, her approach to writing and her journey to having her books published. I think she inspired us all in her advice ‘to enjoy being odd’ and to ‘practise, practise and practise constantly’ to realise our dreams. Unsurprising words from a music teacher and strongly endorsed by the teachers present.Readings Book BuyBook Club boys were treated to a visit from Mr Mike Shuttleworth from Readings Books at lunchtime Wednesday. At the invitation of Mrs Regine Miriklis, he brought along tubs of the latest book releases, as well as some past favourites, for them to peruse and recommend for purchase for the library. The boys thoroughly enjoyed hearing his very informative presentation on the titles.Quizzes, Board Games and Batman Mrs Janine Pietralla organised a highly entertaining quiz on the Book Week theme ‘Escape to Everywhere’, which engaged a number of highly competitive students in identifying ‘places’, be they real locations or imaginary ones from the world of fiction. Another lunchtime activity was playing board games, old-fashioned perhaps but still an appealing activity for many boys. We finished the week with a screening of an episode of the ever-popular Batman, tying it in nicely with our collection of graphic novels.

CGS Cafeteria RosterThe Camberwell Grammar School Cafeteria provides an important service to the school. A wide variety of foods and beverages are sold each day from breakfast to lunch time to boys in Years 6 to 12, as well as staff. Volunteers are asked to perform various tasks including packaging, wrapping and preparation of food such as sandwiches, rolls and fruit salad; serving the boys at both recess and lunch breaks; and occasionally washing dishes if necessary. The tasks are not arduous and parents enjoy the opportunity to help out at school while catching up with each other’s news as well as seeing their sons if they come in to buy lunch. Volunteers take a lunch break when morning recess has finished and may choose a meal from the daily selection, free of charge. It is normal for parents to offer to assist twice a term on the same nominated day. Offers to help fill short term vacancies or simply once per term can also be accommodated. Arrangements can sometimes be made should you wish to be placed on the roster with a friend; otherwise, it is an opportunity to make new acquaintances and participate in the school community. All offers of assistance are gratefully received especially in the second half of the year as some volunteers find they are no longer able to assist because of changing circumstances. We are currently in need of volunteers for some Fridays in Term 4.For further information please contact the Cafeteria Roster Co-ordinator, Nicole Loidl on [email protected] or mobile 0401 697 264, or the CGS Development Office on [email protected] or 9835 1742.

Camberwell Grammar School and Camberwell Girls Grammar School Parent Education

Managing Study, Managing Life – The Balancing Act with Dr Simon Crisp

For Parents and Students in Years 7-12 When one looks at the most successful students our schools produce, one is invariably astonished by the range of co-curricular activities – be they sporting, cultural and musical – often involving part-time work, that distinguish their performance. Hence, academic success is not simply about working harder, but working smarter – and these skills can certainly be taught. Life’s richness arises not only from successful work or study, but also from involving oneself in a range of activities with family, friends and interests of a more solitary nature. How best one can manage that is always a struggle, for all people, irrespective of age, therefore all the more reason to attend to the advice of an expert. Dr Simon Crisp is a distinguished counsellor and psychologist who has spent over 25 years helping young people manage stress and find the means to lead creative and productive lives. Parents and students will find his advice both engaging and invaluable. Dr Simon Crisp, Old Boy of CGS, has been a practicing Clinical Psychologist since 1990 and has had extensive experience in counselling people with specialised/complex psychological issues; relationship issues; all ages, from children, adolescents, adults, parents, families, couples, groups and professionals. His focus is working with teenagers, young adults and families and he has worked in public sector mental health for ten years and full-time private practice since 2000.
