Vocational education was established in Newbridge in 1933, when Kildare Vocational Education Committee organised classes in the local courthouse. A purpose built school was opened in 1937 - on the main street in the building now occupied by the Riverbank Theatre. The school moved to the current site on Station Road in 1979 and has operated there since, oering second level and PLC education ever since. Last year has seen an expansion to the school with the building of a new gymnasium. A further extension been approved by the Department of Education and Skills and is due to commence this year.

St Conleth’s Community College is a caring centre for the educational needs of the community. We promote a positive learning environment to deliver the best possible education in relation to the abilities and aspirations of our students.

The ETB provides a wide-ranging education service to meet key vocational education and training needs of Kildare and Wicklow. This includes 21 post-primary schools, 1 community national school and an Adult and Community Education service which has expanded to meet growing needs over several years.

Evaluation of FETAC qualificationsApplicants should consult HEI literature to establish how FETAC level 5/6 awards are assessed. FETAC level 5/6 major awards are made up of a number of component awards. Different sets of components may lead to different major awards. Some courses require specific major awards. It is important to know which major awards are accepted for entry to these courses. For certain courses in Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) there is a reserved quota of places for applicants presenting FETAC level 5/6 awards. Such applicants compete for these places separately from all other applicants. Details are shown in the HEI prospectus. You may also refer to the FETAC section of the CAO website www.cao.ie. The description below is based on the structure of the CAS awards introduced by FETAC from 2012.

1. Applicants must have obtained a full FETAC Level 5/6 major award. A Component Certificate will not suffice. A full FETAC major award normally contains 8 components. A major award may be accumulated over more than one academic year. In such cases, it is the responsibility of the applicant to apply to FETAC for a major award where courses are taken over more than one year.

2. Certain courses may require specific achievements in particular specific modules (e.g. Distinction or Merit or Pass) within the FETAC level 5/6 major award. Some courses may require a minimum set of achievements, e.g. 5 Distinctions, or 2 Distinctions and 1 Merit - see HEI prospectuses and the FETAC section of the CAO website for details of such specific requirements.

3. If an applicant has the required major award and any specified required component awards then points will be calculated according to the formula below.

4. If an applicant is presenting only FETAC level 5/6 results, the FETAC level 5/6 score is retained for further rounds in the event that a vacancy might arise in the quota for FETAC level 5/6 applicants.

5. Applicants presenting FETAC level 6 awards should contact the relevant HEI for information on the admissions process. Outline of the new FETAC scoring scheme in use by all HEIs from 2013 This scoring scheme only applies where all the requirements for the major award are met, i.e. when

the named component awards specified have been achieved to a minimum of 120 credits. Each component is given a score based on the credit value of the component and the weighting of the grade achieved. Most component awards have a credit value of 15 (the possible component credit values are 5, 10, 15, 20 and 30). The following weightings will apply to the grades achieved: pass=1, merit=2, distinction=3.

To calculate a component score, multiply the credit value of the component by the weighting for the grade achieved. Add all of the component scores up to a cumulative credit value of 120. When adding up these scores begin with distinctions, then merits, then passes. Finally, multiply the total by 10 and divide by 9 to give the overall score (maximum 400). *

*(Note: this means that effectively, the weighting of a component will be approximately: Pass = 1.111; Merit = 2.222; Distinction = 3.333)

Examples of the new FETAC scoring scheme in use by all HEIs from 2013 In these examples distinction = D, merit = M, pass = P. In this example the applicant has 9 distinctions (DDDDDDDDD). All of her components have a credit value of 15. The table below shows the steps required to calculate the overall score. Begin by listing the components in grade order DDDDDDDDD. She has 135 credits and can only count 120 for scoring purposes, so eliminate 15 credits with the least value – i.e. eliminate one of the distinctions.

What is referencing?• Referencing is an acknowledgment of another person’s intellectual work.

• The act of using and not referencing another person’s work is called plagiarism, an oence carrying heavy penalties when producing academic assignments. (see note below) Assignments will be submitted to turnitin and checked for plagiarism.

WHY IS REFERENCING NECESSARY?• Referencing makes it possible for the reader/tutor

• To locate your sources independently, whether out of interest or the need to verify your information.

• By referring to the work of others you are indicating that you have

• read widely,

• that you have relied on quality sources

• & that you are aware of the body of knowledge that already exists on your topic.

WHEN SHOULD YOU REFERENCE?• You need to provide a reference whenever you quote, paraphrase (terms explained next section)

or summarize someone else’s opinions, theories or data. You must also reference any graphical information you use such as tables, photographs or diagrams. Some of the sources you will need to learn how to reference include:

• Books or chapters in books

• Journal or newspaper articles

• Video or television excerpts

• Personal communications such as interviews, emails or letters

• Electronic sources such as web pages, journal articles from online databases, or even software.

• Government publications

• Class notes

Plagiarism occurs where the ideas and writings of another person/websites are passed o as your own. This includes copying section of text without acknowledging where this knowledge has come from. If you do not acknowledge (reference) where information came from you could be accused of plagiarism, cheating or copying. This is considered a major oence in St Conleth’s Community College (please refer to the code of conduct which you have signed and submitted to the college)

FEEDBACK TO LEARNERS

Dates:

Tuesday 10th November 2015: 4.30pm - 6.00pm

Tuesday 1st December 2015: 4.30pm - 6.00pm

Tuesday 1th9 January 2016: 4.30pm - 6.00pm

Thursday 4th February 2016: 4.30pm - 6.00pm

Students are required to attend at least one feedback session. Records will be kept.

FEEDBACK TO LEARNERSKWETB FETAC QA agreement requires provision of ‘constructive and timely feedback’ to learners. To meet this requirement there must be evidence that this procedure has taken place. (See dates above)

Evidence of feedback to learners:• Feedback, given orally, will be documented by the tutor

• Written feedback can be recorded on a feedback form

• Learner should verify that feedback has been received by signing the feedback to learners form

• Evidence of all learner feedback should be retained for FETAC monitoring

The number of feedback sessions which require written feedback will depend on the duration of the programme (See dates above). Full time programmes will require written feedback to be given at least once a term. Shorter and part-time programmes will require feedback less often.

GOOD PRACTICEInvolving learners in self-evaluation or co-evaluation (with the tutor) helps develop reflective skills and independent learning. Learner feedback should be constructive.

COURSE EVALUATIONEvaluation is a requirement of KWETB QAA. This should involve the course co-ordinator, learner and tutor and should be completed at the end of each module. The outcomes should inform tutors’ preparation for the next course. (Student Evaluation FETAC KE 20, 21 and 22)

QUICK GUIDE:Harvard System of Referencing Harvard referencing consists of two elements. You will need to include both of these in your academic work. These two elements are

1. In-text citations (in body of essay / project)2. The reference list (Located at the end of essay /project in appendix / bibliography).

Both of these elements together are known as referencing (Anglia Ruskin University, 2012) 1 .In-text citations (in body of essay / project)

Each time you refer to someone else’s work in your assignment, you need to include the author’s name and the date of their work within your text at the point where you discuss their ideas. This is called citing the author’s work. e.g. the following sentence could be used in your essay where you refer to ideas detailed in a book

by Lori Garrett..... It has been suggested that classical music can help to create a calm study environment in which students can focus on their work (Garrett, 2011)

• Catching up on work missed during absence from classes is the student’s responsibility. Tutors will not keep handouts/notes for absent students.

• If a student is not meeting assignment deadlines set by tutors, students will be required to leave the course.

• Failure to meet the 80% attendance will result in grants and BTEA being cancelled.
