Welcome in the name of Jesus Christ! Joyfully and Intentionally Make & Nurture Disciples who Make Disciples

We thank God that you have joined us this morning for worship. If you are visiting with us, we thank God you are here and pray our worship together will be a mutual blessing. If you are looking for a church home, we hope Abiding Savior can meet your needs. Please introduce yourself to one of the Pastors. We ask both members and visitors to kindly fill out attendance cards and pass them to the center aisle. The ushers will gather them during the Sermon Hymn which follows the Children’s Message. Feel free to add a prayer request for the Pastor to include in the congregational prayer. We love children here at Abiding Savior. Parents are encouraged to sit in the front pews so that young children can see what is happening during worship. If you should want to make use of our cry room or nursery, please ask one of our ushers for directions.

Worship Service of Word and Song The First Sunday in Lent

Sunday, March 1, 2020 – 10:15 a.m. WELCOME

Please stand.

OPENING CONGREGATIONAL SONG

“King Of Kings” In the darkness we were waiting, without hope, without light,

Till from Heaven You came running. There was mercy in Your eyes. To fulfil the law and prophets, to a virgin came the Word

From a throne of endless glory to a cradle in the dirt.

Chorus: Praise the Father, praise the Son, praise the Spirit, three in one. God of glory, majesty, praise forever to the King of Kings.

To reveal the kingdom coming and to reconcile the lost,

To redeem the whole creation You did not despise the cross. For even in Your suff’ring, You saw to the other side.

Knowing this was our salvation, Jesus, for our sake You died. Chorus

And the morning that You rose all of heaven held its breath Till that stone was moved for good, for the Lamb had conquered death.

And the dead rose from their tombs, and the angels stood in awe, For the souls of all who’d come to the Father are restored.

And the Church of Christ was born, then the Spirit lit the flame.

Now this Gospel truth of old shall not kneel, shall not faint. By His blood and in His Name, in His freedom I am free,

For the love of Jesus Christ who has resurrected me.

Praise the Father, praise the Son, praise the Spirit, three in one. God of glory, majesty, praise forever to the King of Kings.

Praise forever to the King of Kings.

INVOCATION Pastor: In the Name of the Father and of the † Son and of the Holy Spirit. All: Amen!

Worshippers are invited to kneel for the Confession and Absolution. Those who desire not to kneel may sit or stand.

CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION Pastor: If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in

us. All: But if we confess our sins, God, who is faithful and just, will forgive

our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Pastor: Let us then confess our sins to God our Father. Most merciful God, All: we confess that we are by nature sinful and unclean. We have

sinned against You in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved You with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We justly deserve Your present and eternal punishment. For the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in Your will and walk in Your ways to the glory of Your holy name. Amen.

Pastor: In the mercy of almighty God, Jesus Christ was given to die for us, and

for His sake God forgives us all our sins. To those who believe in Jesus Christ He gives power to become the children of God and bestows on them the Holy Spirit. May the Lord, Who has begun this good work in us, bring it to completion in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ.

All: Amen. EPISTLE READING ROMANS 5:12-19 Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned— for sin indeed was in the world before the law was given, but sin is not counted where there is no law. Yet death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over those whose sinning was not like the transgression of Adam, who was a type of the one who was to come. But the free gift is not like the trespass. For if many died through one man’s trespass, much more have the grace of God and the free gift by the grace of that one man Jesus Christ abounded for many. And the free gift is not like the result of that one man’s sin. For the judgment following one trespass brought condemnation, but the free gift following many trespasses brought justification. If, because of one man’s trespass, death reigned through that one man, much more will those who receive the abundance of grace and the free gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man Jesus Christ. Therefore, as one trespass led to condemnation for all men, so one act of righteousness leads to justification and life for all men. For as by the one man’s disobedience the many were made sinners, so by the one man’s obedience the many will be made righteous.

CONGREGATIONAL SONG “Joy Of The Lord”

Though the tears may fall, my song will rise, My song will rise to You.

Though my heart may fail, my song will rise, My song will rise to You.

While there’s breath in my lungs I will praise You, Lord.

In the dead of night, I’ll lift my eyes, I’ll lift my eyes to You.

When the waters rise, I’ll lift my eyes, I’ll lift my eyes to You.

While there’s hope in this heart I will praise You, Lord.

Chorus: The joy of the Lord is my strength! The joy of the Lord is my strength!

In the darkness I’ll dance, In the shadows I’ll sing, The joy of the Lord is my strength!

When I cannot see You with my eyes, Let faith arise to You. When I cannot feel Your hand in mine, Let faith arise to You.

God of mercy and love, I will praise You, Lord.

Oh, You shine with glory, Lord of light; I feel alive with You. In Your presence now, I come alive; I am alive with You.

There is strength when I say: “I will praise You Lord!” Chorus Twice

When sorrow comes my way, You are the shield around me. Always, You remain, Like courage in the fight. I hear You call my name. Jesus, I am coming,

Walking on the waves, reaching for Your light! Chorus Twice

We stand for the reading of the Holy Gospel:

GOSPEL READING MATTHEW 4:1-11 Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. And after fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. And the tempter came and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread.” But he answered, “It is written, “‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’” Then the devil took him to the holy city and set him on the pinnacle of the temple and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down, for it is written, “‘He will command his angels concerning you,’ and “‘On their hands they will bear you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone.’” Jesus said to him, “Again it is written, ‘You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’”

Page 6: Contemporary Service - Abiding Savior

6

Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. And he said to him, “All these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me.” Then Jesus said to him, “Be gone, Satan! For it is written, “‘You shall worship the Lord your God and him only shall you serve.’” Then the devil left him, and behold, angels came and were ministering to him.

Worshippers are invited to stand and share the peace of the Lord with each other. Children can come down to the chancel steps for the children’s message.

CHILDREN’S MESSAGE

Children going to Sunday School will be met at the back of the church in the center aisle.

Prayer and member/guest cards will be collected during the singing of the following song:

CONGREGATIONAL SONG “Amazing Grace (My Chains Are Gone)”

Amazing grace, how sweet the sound, That saved a wretch like me. I once was lost, but now I’m found, Was blind but now I see.

‘Twas grace that taught my heart to fear, And grace my fears relieved.

How precious did that grace appear, the hour I first believed.

Refrain: My chains are gone. I’ve been set free, My God, my Savior has ransomed me.

And like a flood His mercy reigns, unending love, amazing grace.

The Lord has promised good to me, His word my hope secures. He will my shield and portion be, As long as life endures. Refrain Twice

The earth shall soon dissolve like snow, The sun forbear to shine.

But God, who called me here below, will be forever mine, Will be forever mine. You are forever mine.

“Deceptive Eyes” Matthew 4:1-11

APOSTLES CREED I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy

Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.

THE PRAYERS Pastor: Let us pray for the whole people of God in Christ Jesus and for all

people according to their needs. Pastor: We pray together, All: Our Father who art in heaven, Hallowed be Thy name; Thy

kingdom come; Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; Give us this day our daily bread; And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; And lead us not into temptation; But deliver us from evil. For Thine is the Kingdom and the Power and the Glory for ever and ever. Amen.

BENEDICTION Pastor: The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make His face shine upon

you and be gracious unto you. The Lord look upon you with favor and † give you peace.

Fill my life again. I give my life to follow Everything I believe in, Now I surrender.

Chorus: Savior, He can move the mountains, My God is Mighty to save,

He is Mighty to save. Forever, Author of salvation, He rose and conquered the grave, Jesus conquered the grave.

Health Ministry Best Sickness Defense: Handwashing Handwashing is the best way to protect yourself from most illnesses. (That, and not touching your eyes, nose, or mouth.) And the best handwashing technique is to use warm water and soap, rub vigorously, and count to 30. Young children are being taught to sing the “Happy Birthday” song twice or “Jesus Loves Me” once to get that important time in.

ASLC Seniors

The Seniors will meet Thursday, March 5 in the Adult Education Room starting with coffee and congenial conversation at 11:30 a.m. A catered lunch will be served at noon. The lunch costs $10. Please call Vi Flum at 949-859-3512 for reservations. After lunch, Paul Engelder will present a narrated slide show of their River Cruise on the Rhine and Main Rivers. All ASLC members and friends are welcome.

Meals Ministry Would you like to bring meals to Abiding Savior families who could use a helping hand because of hospitalization, etc.? Be a part of the Meals Ministry team! This is a great way to occasionally serve and show God’s love through bringing a meal. Contact Laura Mehrley at [email protected] or call (714) 624-2152 to join the team. If you need help from the Meals Ministry team, please call the church office to let us know and we’ll be happy to help.

Ladies Guild Our March meeting will take place Wednesday, March 11 at noon in the Adult Ed Room. We will be doing Easter cards for our prayer list and an Easter project for homebound friends. Audrey Henry will be our hostess providing dessert. Bring your sack lunch and join us!
