PRESIDENT’S MESSAGEHello to all of my PPO family. Family is a Big part of who I am. Family is a Big part of my life and how I

conduct my everyday business. Family can be your support system, guide you and give you motivation.

My Family has always been there to encourage and help me grow in every aspect of my life. I don’t know how I could have been able to start my business at the age of 17 with out the help of my parentsand them allowing me to take over their home. LOL My husband Joe, has been a huge factor in my success. We have two children, Ben -age 14 and Katelyn- age 10. So it takes a strong family support to achieve success.

My PPO Family is the other support system for success in my business. As I stated earlier I started my studio at the age of 17. No prior photography background, none of my family or friends knew anything about the business. I was really on my own. I have no collage background. PPO has been my source of education, and networking with fellow members is one of the perks of belonging to such a great organization. The Fall Convention and the Annual Convention are just a few reasons to belong to PPO. The contacts that you make within the organization become a great source of knowledge and you can call upon them at

anytime to help you along. Therefore you gain a PPO Family.

PPO is growing in so many ways! The 2011 Annual Convention at Kalahari Resort in Sandusky was AMAZING!!!!. What a fun atmosphere. PPO is striving to provide some great learning experiences like our Photo Safari’s and hands on workshops. Who knew PPO would be taking a workshop class to downtown Sandusky in the freezing cold and such beautiful snow. What great workshops they all turned out to be. These are a fantastic learning experience and tones of fun!

PPO is bringing to you some of the top vendors in the industry with the newest technology and products available to photographers with our Trade Shows. Trade Shows have been a great benefit to me through the years, being able to see first hand the products and new equipment and to try out a new lens is such a great benefit. Searching online for new products is very difficult and you don’t get the feel of the new products so Trade shows are a great place to catch up and see the new products.

PPO is a great Family to belong to, I am glad to be a part of it and hope you are too.

We have recommitted ourselves to being a community of continuing education, association and mutual benefit. We believe that the best way to create a positive environment where photographers and studios can flourish is to be inclusive.

To reach out to those that are new and students of photography and teach them the value of what we do. And, to reach back to established studios and help them meet the new challenges of a world where social media, email, and constant communication change the way that business is done - and to help us all learn from each other.

New Editor - New LookThe Contact Sheet is undergoing a few new changes (if you haven’t noticed already)

among which is a new Editor-in-Chief. Brent Watkins, of Sylvart Studios in Barberton has taken over the duties from longtime Editor Ladd Scavnicky. We would all like to thank Ladd for the tremendous amount of work he put into the Contact Sheet over the years making it a staple of PPO and a gorgeous magazine in it’s own right. Thank you Ladd, for many, many wonderful issues. We hope to keep that tradition strong.

This is the first of several transitional issues of the newsletter. - we are trying to move into a new direction. Electronic distribution is the first major change, and the format shift is also going to be tweaked over the next several months. We welcome feedback and all constructive criticism will be taken into consideration. Please send that feedback to: [email protected]

We are looking forward to seeing change and growth over the next year and want you to take part. If you have articles that you would like to submit, questions that need answered, or any other requests for the newsletter, we are here to help.

OHIO CPP President’s Message

As I am sitting here typing this, I’ve realized a few things: That I have the honor of being Commissioner of the CPP’s. I haven’t had to type out something like this since college, and that I hope to fulfill this position as well as is has been in the past. I Would like to thank Craig for the wonderful job he did as commissioner the past two years, and for me not having to speak at the next PPO awards banquet. I would also like to thank all those that ran for a spot on the Commission. Congratulations to the three elected. Ken Holida, Bill Smith and Jon Johnson. So the commission will be made up of the following people: Steve and Julie Busch,

Ladd Scavnicky, Mike Osborn, Denny Valentine, Jim Schwarz, Jon Johnson, Ken Holida and Bill Smith. I hope to

help the CPP organization grow not just in members but in helping all CPP’s grow as photographers and business people. We will be judging prints at convention in November so if you are thinking about applying or have prints that haven’t been accepted get them to a member and good luck.We had a really nice seminar on the Monday after convention with Gabriel Alonso, I have a new appreciation of what he does and the art involved. As we wrap up another school year and prepare for the weddings this summer and the seniors that will

be coming in just remember that we all have a special gift so nurture it with education, share it with your friends and relay it to your clients in your work.

✤ You must be a member of the Professional Photographers of Ohio for one year.

✤ You must have a vendor’s license or be employed by a studio

✤ You are now eligible to fill out the application to apply for Ohio CPP. Fill out the application completely and submit 10 8x10 prints [mounted, customer ready and in the proper percentage as you have listed on you application]. You must have two Ohio CPP’s, in good standing, to sponsor you. They must sign your application. When this is complete, you are ready to send this package to the CPP Commission for judging.

✤ There is a non-refundable application fee of $75 to be submitted along with your application and prints. If any of your prints are not accepted by the commission judging, they will be returned to you for replacement. You will be informed why your prints

failed. You will have 24 months to complete this judging. The commission will judge whatever prints are turned into them. The Commission meets six times a year, prior to the PPO Board meetings and the Ohio Convention.

✤ Each affiliate has a person assigned to answer your questions about Ohio CPP. Find out who that person is for your affiliate, or call the PPO office and ask for the name of the CPP Commission member near you.

Creating Art, Because Good Enough Doesn’t

Cut ItMichael Osborne started his career in 1981, just after graduating high school. He worked for a large chain photographer studio. His first duty with that

company was in sales. Mike remembers hating doing the sales for the studio, but he was good at it. Mike really wanted to be in the photography room. It took a year for him to convince his boss to give him a chance in the camera room. They knew sales wasn’t in his heart, photography was! Mike worked another 4 years with the company, until he decided to “go out on mine own”.

Michael married my wife, Rachel, in 1985. They were living in California at the time. It was tough life in California, because it was so expensive to live there. Michael and Rachel moved backed to Findlay, Ohio in 1986. Mike’s dad got very ill and knew that it was best to come back. He died in 1993. Michael didn’t know his father had photography studio in the early 60’s, until after he had died. Micke opened his first studio, Keepsake Portraits, in Findlay, Ohio. He remembers getting his first vendor license and feeling the excitement of knowing that his future was in his hands.

The business grew from there, and in 1990, Mike decided to rent a new, larger, store front in Findlay. This was great

SPOTLIGHT - MICHAEL OSBORNEmove, that made him be able to focus his skills towards High School Seniors.

Back then, a $400 average was a goal for many photographers. Mike wanted to increase that average and also, “break the norm” for HS senior photography. First, he wanted to find a photographer that was ahead of everyone else in the business. That person was Larry Peters. Larry inspired Michael in ways and was ahead of

his time. Michael studied with him ever since, and is glad to call him a friend today.

In 1995, Michael grew the studio to the point that he could not continue in the store front that he was in. He then purchased a 2500 sq ft. building in Findlay. He built outdoor sets and put in a waterfall with stream with fish. It was a great move

and really let him expand on the senior business, increasing it from 150 in 1994-95 seniors to almost 800 seniors in 1998. Michel now employed two other photographers, sales staff and framers. It was very busy and hard work.

Michael’s philosophy was to have every senior session look

different with a personal touch, at a reasonable cost. It worked well and is still the philosophy today.As time went on and Photoshop and digital photography was coming to age. Mike was the first studio

in the area to go fully digital in 1998. His first digital camera was a 1.4 mega-pixel Kodak.

In March 2006, tragedy struck when Rachel suddenly died of a heart condition . Michael was forced to either keep up 10 hour work days or to sell my business. He chose to sell in late 2006 because he

wanted to raise the kids who were 7 and 11 years old. He couldn’t imagine working that much and not being able to see them grow up. When it came to the kids, it was not a hard decision to sell the studio.Since then, Michael has

kept busy with photography and received his Photographic Craftsman and Masters of Photography Degree through the PPA. He still continues to speak on senior photography at state and local convention along with designing and selling actions, templates, brushes etc., through Michael D Osborne Photoshop Actions and Templates CD.

Digital and Photoshop has made it easier to sell more products to your customer to increase your sales. It has also created the hobbyists to open their door to our customers. To set yourself apart, you first need to expand on your knowledge of photography and make sure your posing, lighting and creativity is better than the hobbyists. Also, be honest and have the customer “fall in love” with your personally and creativity. Remember, repeat business is the best business. All this combined will make you succeed.

PPO CHARITY - CAMERAS FOR KIDSPPO will be

holding a Fall "FUN" Charity Folio Competition.This is a benefit competition to help raise money for PPO's Charity -Camera's For Kids

 This competition is to showcase our amazing PPO talent. This is a creative competition that you will be given a

theme to go by and everyone in the competition will have to use the same theme. You will be able to enter up to 4 -10x10 folio's. This competition will be judged as a "Peoples

Choice" it will not be judged with the Digital Competition. Fun trophies will be awarded to the Top 3 winners. 

Winners will be announced at the Awards Ceremony on Sunday Evening.

 These folios will be on display Sunday and Monday. Folio's will not be

shipped back to the maker. Arrangementsfor pick up must be made or your folio will not be returned to you. All folio's will need to be picked up by the close of the Trade show on Monday afternoon.

Each folio entry will cost $ 10.00 with a major portion being given to PPO's Charity (Camera's for Kids). Remember this is for FUN and Charity, have fun photographing, andbe creative with your entries!  We are looking for creativity and originality. The Theme for our First "Fun" Charity Folio

Competition is : "Candyland"- This must be your title for your image and you will need to use M&M's somehow in your image.
