When I was a boy, we had a family cat. She would sit by the back door and stare at it longingly as if she wanted to go outside. Then, when I opened the door for her to go out, she would tense up as if she could not move. I would nudge her with my foot, but she seemed frozen in the decision. Should she stay in or go out? Much of the world faces the same dilemma now as doors are starting to open and the shutdown is gradually being lifted. Up until recently, our choices have been very restricted. Most doors were closed to us and we could neither come in nor go out no matter how much we wanted to. Now, the moral burden is shifting back to us individuals. It truly is a blessed moment. God delights to see us squirm with tricky moral choices. Heaven comes to our aid as we roll up our spiritual sleeves and dig deeper into prayer and discernment of what is best. Competing goods, values, and consequences are measured and weighed. We find ourselves exercising virtues we haven’t used in a long time. Through it all we grow as more mature moral agents. I don’t deny that I have muttered a bit in these past months at “the forces that be” for not letting me do some of the things I’ve wanted to do. Now, we are given a little more freedom to come in and go out – or not. I pray that Holy Wisdom will show us the way as each of us does some spiritual and practical self-assessment. Ready or not! It’s between you and God – but for the greater glory of us all. ~ Fr.
