It is not too late! There is still time to celebrate your club’s Member of the Year honoree with Multiples of America. Each club is asked to select a local club member who you feel best exemplifies the title of Member of the Year for your club based on criteria determined by your club. See the link on page five of this document.
On page five, you will find the Multiple Birth Data Base (MBDB) information survey link. Since 2007, we have used this survey to collect data and have found it very beneficial for researchers and others. In an effort to continually be up-to-date with this database, we need your help in spreading the word to your members. If a member has never provided information, or provided information before 2007, please encourage them to participate using this survey. Those parents who have completed the survey since 2007 are already in our database and no action is needed. This survey is to be filled out by a parent of multiples. The information is kept confidential and in a computerized data base maintained by Multiples of America. Information gathered gives us statistical information and may be used by approved researchers and/or casting directors. However, no personal information is ever given.

Outside Research Studies
SPRING SUMMARY – 2015
Jan Schmelz, Outside Research Coordinator
Two of the main purposes of Multiples of America aka the National
Organization of Mothers of Twins Club, Inc. (NOMOTC) are research and
education. The twelve members of the Research Department have worked
diligently this past year to further these goals.
The Research Department of Multiples of America cooperates with outside researchers such as physicians,
psychologists, other professionals and, occasionally, parents of multiples to connect them with participants
(multiples, siblings of multiples and parents of multiples) for their studies. Studies using multiples as subjects help
to shed light on many child development and medical issues. Twins and higher-order multiples aid researchers in
helping to distinguish between heredity and environment as causes of certain issues or medical conditions.
Our cooperative efforts also help us serve our second purpose, that of educating parents, researchers, multiples and
others having responsibility for, and interest in, multiples. We make this research data available to our membership
through publication in Multiples of America’s Notebook, online in Multiple Messages, Fall/Spring Mailings that go
to National Representatives and local club presidents, and on our website http//www.multiplesofamerica.org. In
addition, detailed Research Reports are prepared for all completed studies and distributed to our members
To participate in any of the “active research studies,” contact the researcher directly at the address listed. With
your cooperation and willingness to participate in these studies, you are furthering knowledge in the fields of
medicine and child development and helping to increase knowledge about multiple birth children.
Dr. Segal is doing a study on Adult Twins who are Parents. She is looking for ADULT twins who HAVE children,
in order to look at the relationships of twin aunts/uncles to their nieces/nephews. Families in which twin parents are identical, fraternal same-sex and fraternal opposite-sex are all of interest. This study is ongoing in the Psychology
Department at California State University, Fullerton. To access the survey, which takes 15-20 minutes to complete,
please go to http://psych.fullerton.edu/nsegal/twinparent. For further information, please contact Dr. Segal at new

RESEARCH STUDY – FAITH
DO OBESITY-RELATED METABOTYPES RELATE TO TWIN DIFFERENCES IN DIET, APPETITE
AND BODY COMPOSITION?
A new study by the UNC Department of Nutrition is examining the influence of nature and nurture on appetite,
eating patterns, and body fat in early childhood. The study is now actively recruiting participants. The study is
looking for English-speaking families with identical twins who are 4- to 8-years old and do not have a diagnosed
illness, severe behavioral issue, or claustrophobia. Participating families will be visited at their homes by UNC’s
Metabolic Mobile Unit (MMU), a special van equipped for this biomedical research. Participating twins will have
their body fat measured using a painless, booth type machine called a BOD POD. Parents will fill out questionnaires regarding family home life and eating habits. Both twins will also provide urine and blood samples, as part of the
visit. Participating families will receive a $50 gift card, as well as a report with their twins’ height, weight and body
composition results.
If you are interested in participating or just want more information, please contact Dr. Myles Faith at 919-966-7230
or [email protected] These outside researchers have approached Multiples of America in hopes of recruiting
participants for their studies. Each has a contract and has been approved by Multiples of America. If you or your
multiples have the proper qualifications and wish to participate, please contact these researchers directly for further
details concerning their studies. Contacting a researcher does not obligate you to participate. Please keep in mind that two of the main purposes of Multiples of America are research and education. Your participation in these
studies is encouraged, and all communication is confidential between you and the researchers. For a complete list of
current researchers and information, visit our website at www.multiplesofamerica.org.
Current contact information for each research study is listed above. Please use the information provided by the
researcher to contact them directly. Multiples of America does not have any additional contact information.
Researchers studies may have a specific ending date (listed) or may have open ended dates (not listed). Multiples of
America thanks you in advance for taking the time to read about these research studies and choosing to participate

The Group Exemption filing deadline is December 1st, please complete yearly statements after July 31, 2015
to ensure timely submission in November. Totals for August 1 through July 31 each year are required.
Did you know that approximately 75% of Multiples of America’s member clubs participate?
This is very important to all clubs. Here are the reasons why!
With Multiples of America’s classification, its subordinates receive the following benefits:
The IRS will recognize your club as a subordinate chapter of Multiples of America/NOMOTC withassignment of a Group Exemption Number (GEN).
With this ruling, subordinates may receive gifts and donations that are tax deductible by donors.
A subordinate may apply for state tax exemption, if applicable. Most states will not classify a localchapter for sales tax exemption, unless federal exemption has been granted. Multiples of Americacannot file for state exemption for clubs.
If club mailings are 200 or more pieces, a subordinate may apply for postal nonprofit rates, asubstantial savings from regular bulk postal rates.
Officers and committee chairpersons can deduct out-of-pocket expenses in personal income taxreturns, including mileage in conducting business. Further information for individuals is available in theIRS 1040 Packet, under instructions for Schedule A (contributions).
Multiples of America/NOMOTC will complete the Form 990-N, e-Postcard, on behalf of clubs with grossreceipts less than $50K. Clubs with gross receipts exceeding $50K are required to file Form 990 and willthus meet the reporting requirements related to Form 990 –N. (For the definition of gross receipts, contact the Executive Office.)
Participation in Multiples of America/NOMOTC’s 501(c) (3) filing with the IRS requires that member clubs
