Proposed interventions for Cycle Lane Works on Hessle Road: This cycle lane improvement scheme runs from the city boundary at Hessle, along Hessle Road to Brighton Street. It joins up with National Cycle Network Route 65 that then leads all the way to the city centre. The scheme aims to provide a continuous, safe route for cyclists along Hessle Road, providing segregation from moving traffic, while also still allowing parking to take place. It will also help reduce traffic speeds to improve safety for residents and all road users. To achieve this, it is proposed to implement an innovative treatment using flexible bollards, to separate the cycle lanes from moving traffic. The existing cycle lanes will be made wider and highlighted by green surfacing strips and bike logos on the road surface. Cars will be able to access parking areas by crossing into the bollarded off areas, at low speed, and parking in marked out bays, similar to the existing arrangements. Wide green cycle lanes will be provided around the Priory Way and Askew Avenue roundabouts to highlight the presence of cyclists to other road users, and the traffic lanes reduced in width to slow speeds. Bus stops will remain as existing.
