Consul...ting MARCH 2012 Publication of the Consulate General of Mexico in Toronto Large Mexican Presence at PDAC 2012 Mining Show A large delegation of high-level Mexican officials participated in the mining conven- tion organized by the Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada (PDAC), held in Toronto from March 4-7. The show drew close to 28,000 people from 120 countries. Some of the most noteworthy of the delegation's activities included the second edition of Mexico Mining Day, the Mexico Pavilion, the Mexico Mining Day Recep- tion and the signing of an agreement with an Australian company. Leading the Mexican delegation were the Secretary of the Economy, Bruno Fe- rrari; the Undersecretary of Industry and Com- merce of the Ministry of the Economy, Loren- za Martínez; the Undersecretary of Manage- ment for Environmental Protection of the Mi- nistry of the Environment and Natural Resour- ces (SEMARNAT), Mauricio Límon; the Ge- neral Agrarian Procurator, Rocendo González; the General Coordinator of Mining for the Secretary of the Economy, Jimena Valverde; the General Director of the Mining Develop- ment Trust Fund (Fideicomiso de Fomento Minero), Alberto Ortiz Trillo; the director of the Mexican Geological Survey, Rafael Alexandri; the Governor of Zacatecas, Miguel Alonso Reyes; state officials from Durango, Sonora and Sinaloa; as well as the Ambassa- dor of Mexico to Canada Francisco Barrio, the Consul General of Mexico in Toronto, Mauri- cio Toussaint, and the ProMexico representati- ve in Toronto, José A. Peral. The second anual Mexico Mining Day semi- nar was held with the aim of promoting fo- reign investment in Mexico's mining sector. The keynote speaker, Secretary of the Econo- my Bruno Ferrari, noted the benefits of inves- ting in Mexico, giving special mention to the mining sector for the legal certainty which it offers its concessionaires, as weel as its effi- ciency. The seminar consisted of various presenta- tions and panel discussions with participation from Canadian and Mexican mining company executives, brokers, and Mexican government officials. At the Mining Task Force meeting of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce in Mexico, the Agricultural Attorney Gene- ral, Rocendo González, also addressed the subject of land tenure, saying that there are 7,800 “ejidos” (comunal land proper- ty) (36 million hectares) in Mexico which are interested in collaborating with inves- tors. The Undersecretary of SEMARNAT, Mauricio Limón, gave a presentation on environmental issues related to Mexico's mining industry in which he urged inves- tors to learn about Mexican environmen- tal law. Also part of the mining convention was a cocktail reception at the Scotiabank Old Ban- king Hall attended by over 500 people, inclu- ding representatives from mining service com- panies and provincial and federal officials from both Mexico and Canada. The Mexican Geological Survey and the Australian company “Intierra” signed a signi- ficant agreement through which the firm would promote Mexican mining projects among its 300,000 potential clients. From March 4-7, officials from the Mexican Geological Survey (Secretary of the Econo- my) hosted the Mexico Pavilion at the mining show, which featured digital information about Mexico's mining projects. Opening the TSX A Mexican delegation par- ticipated in opening the To- ronto Stock Exchange on March 7, 2012. The ceremony began with a few words of welcome from the CEO of the TMX (Toronto Stock Ex- change and TSX Venture Ex- change), Thomas Kloet, and from the Mexican Ambassador, Francisco Barrio. Following a countdown in Spanish, at exactly 9:30am, Ambassador Francisco Barrio and Tom Kloet rang the bell to start the day. The Consul General in Toronto, Mauricio Toussaint, and the ProMexico representa- tive in Toronto, José A. Peral were part of the Mexican dele- gation. According to the TSX, 223 Canadian mining companies listed on the stock exchange have just over 600 projects in Mexico.
