eLearnings Doors and Windows

Overview Provides access form the outside to the interior swell as passage between interior spaces -located appropriate to the usage patterns and activities of the inhabitants -exterior doors should be weather tight and maintain approximate thermal insulation values as the surrounding walls -doors should be bespoke to

Door Type Operation Swinging -Turns on hinges about the door jamb -most effective for thermal and acoustic -can be fire and explosive resistant

Bypass Sliding -slide on overhead track and runners or separate side beneath -no operating space but difficult to weatherproof -ineffective use of space-access only through 50% of the doorway

Surface Sliding -provides access to the full width of the doorway -surface hung sand difficult to fully insulate

Pocket Sliding -slides on an overhead track in and out of access way on the internal wall -often used where folding door would interfere with use of space

Folding Doors -Hinged panel that fold flat against each other when opened -Bi-folding doors divide into two parts, require little operating space and are used primarily as visual screen to enclose closet and store spaces

Wooden Doors Hollow Core Doors -Frame work of stiles and framework encasing an expended honeycomb core of corrugated fiber board of a grid of interlocking horizontal and vertical wood strips -Light weight but have little inherently thermal or acoustic value -Primarily interior but can be sued on the exterior is coasted with water proof adhesive

Solid Core Doors -Core of bonded lumber blocks -Use primarily as exterior doors, but may also be sued where increase fire resistance, sound insulation or dimensional stability is required

Batten Doors -Vertical board sheathing nailed at right angles to cross strips or ledgers -Diagonal bracing is nailed between or notched into the ledgers -Used as exterior doors for right environments e.g. farms -Tongue and groove timers are recommend for weight efficiency

Glass Doors -Constructed from high strength or tempered glass -may be offset in frame to swing in one direction or be center hung for double acting operation -may be set on a pivot-opposed to hung or hinges

Revolving Doors -Consist of various leaves (dependent on the size of the door) that rotate about a central, vertical pivot within a cylindrically shaped vestibule -provide a continuous weather seal, eliminate drafts and hold heating and cooling losses -regulate the pressure differential between the interior and exterior of the structure-provides a continuous passage way between interior and exterior whilst not exposing one to the other-preventing pressure differential transfer

Weather Stripping -consists of metal, felt, vinyl, or foam runner strips placed between the door or window sash and its frame -act as a seal between internal and external environments -material should be durable, non-corrosive and replaceable

Windows Window Elements Rough opening -Opening in the superstructure for the window to sit -Space is required at the top, sides and bottom for leveling and shimming of the window unit Window Frame -Frame in whack the sash and window glazing sits -Sash is fixed to the frame and the frame fixed to the rough opening -Can be variety of material but most commonly aluminum or timber -Head is the uppermost member of the window frame -Jamb is wither of the two side members -Sill is the horizontal member beneath the window or door-usually sloped to shed rainwater -Sub sill is fitted for drip protection -Section between window frame and the rough opening should be sealed for thermal insulation and weather tightness Sash and Glazing -Sash: fixed, movable frame work of a window in which the panes of glass of material sit -Glazing: panes or sheets of material in the sashes of the window-single glazing, double glazing or triple glazing -Operating sash should be weather stripped against windblown rain and air filtration

Casing Trim -Finished trim work around the window opening -Usually internal-used little externally -Provided a physical barrier and cover over the gap between the rough opening, window frame and window sill

Types of Windows Metal Windows -May be fabricated form aluminum, steel or bronze-or a composite alloy Considerations:

• details of frame and sash profiles • weight and thickness • thermal performance sod deserted assembly • resistance to corrosion and surrounding environment • glazing methods and options • finished

Aluminum Windows -Relatively low in cost, lightweight, resistant to corrosion as they are such efficient conductor of heat, thermal breaks and synthetic insulators are required to interrupt the flow of heat -Have baked enamel or fluoropolymer resin finishes

Steel Windows -Manufactured from hot rolled or cold rolled steel -More rigid and thinner in profile then aluminum -Larger panes to be installed due to their strength -Lower conductivity or heat-minimise thermal breaks

Timber Windows -Thicker, more effective as thermal insulators -Treated in a water repellant preservative -May be primed, stained or painted -Bonded with acrylic painted to minimise maintenance

Glazing Systems Face Glazing -Small glass frames may be set in a rabbet frame, held in place with glaziers points, and sealed with a beveled bed of putty or glazing compound

Dry Glazing -Getting of glass in a window frame with a compression gasket instead of glazing tape or liquid sealant

Insulating Glass -Consists of two or more sheets of glass separated by a hermetically sealed air space -This provided increased thermal insulation and restricts condensation -For improved thermal efficiency, tinted, reflective or low emissivity (low-e) glass may be used

Glazed Curtain Walls -Exterior, non-load bearing walls consisting of vision glass or opaque spandrel panels supported by metal framing -Types: Stick Systems -Tubular metal mullions and rails assembled piece by piece on site to frame vision glass and spandrel units -Versatile and site adjustable

Unit Systems -Consist of reassembled, framed wall units which may be pre glazed or glazed after installation -Larger, heavier and less effected construction system compared to stick system

Unit and Mullion System -One or more two story high mullions are installed before preassembled wall units are lowered into place behind the mullions

Column-Cover-and-Spandrel System -Consist of vision glass assemblies and spandrel units supported by spandrel beams between exterior columns clad with cover sections

Skylights -Allow daylight to enter through roofs structure -Carful consideration should be paid to the control of brightness and glare -South facing skylights also increase solar heat gain during the winter months -Requires a frame roof opening-both the support roof structure and the skylight units must been engineered to carry the anticipated roof loads

Sunspaces -Glass enclosed porch or room adjoining another living space oriented to admit large amounts of sunlight -Often used in conduction with solid thermal mass to increases net heat gain -Due to the probability of overheating, precautions towards shade, ventilation and operable windows should be considered
