Ready-mixed concrete additives
Ready-mixed concrete production is a heterogeneous and complex segment of the concrete industry with its own specific requirements and objectives defined by final applications
Work with ready-mixed concrete always pro-ceeds locally, when financial and transport is-sues often play a key role in decision-making Such properties as a long-term concrete work-ability and concrete strength are important for contractors and designers, respectively BASF experts from the Concrete Additives Division clearly understand that the industry, continu-ously adapting to the changing environment, is starving for innovations To solve these prob-lems, we have implemented the Total Perfor-mance Control (Total Quality Control) technol-ogy based on the latest MasterGlenium SKY additive For the first time ever, this approach allowed us to fulfill specific conditions and re-quirements and consistently produce high qual-ity concrete
The new concept allows the production of con-crete that meets requirements of European Standard EN 206–1 and is featured with a long-term workability and low water-to-cement ratio The MasterGlenium SKY superplasticizer, one of the recent BASF developments, is a key ele-ment of the Total Quality Control concept This is an advanced polycarboxylate-ether (PCE) superplasticizer, designed to simultaneously reduce water-to-cement ratio in concrete mixes and to maintain concrete fluidity for a long time

Admixtures for precast concrete
Production of concrete and reinforced concrete structures is focused on the technology, on which a set of requirements such as time constraints, environmental impact, workers’ safety, energy cost minimization, etc, is imposed
Materials for producing precast concrete and reinforced concrete structures include a lot of components A great number of technological methods for producing these structural ele-ments has been developed: pouring, extrusion and centrifugal casting These methods allow production of reinforced and prestressed/ not-prestressed products Despite existing diversity, manufacturers of prefabricated structures al-ways face the same problem, ie, the necessity to increase capacity and produce high-quality concrete products, which meet the industry and economy requirements BASF experts from the Concrete Additives Division have developed a new Zero Energy System, which optimizes pow-er consumption, required for concrete product manufacturing, through the hydration process acceleration without additional heating The MasterGlenium ACE superplasticizer is the main component of the Zero Energy System
The MasterGlenium ACE molecules are quickly adsorbed on the cement particle surface and facilitate the process of rapid cement particle dispersion due to the effect of electrostatic and steric repulsion forces
Molecules of the traditional RFE plasticizers cover the entire surface of cement particles and hinder water penetration thereto Therefore, the hydration process proceeds very slowly
A unique molecular structure of the MasterGle-nium ACE increases a contact surface between cement particles and water This results in an earlier emission of hydration heat, accelerated formation of hydration products and, as a con-sequence, earlier product strength increase This advantage can be used by lowering ther-mal treatment temperature and/or time

Concrete mix viscosity modifiers (stabilizers)
Due to a specially designed formulation, concrete mix viscosity modifiers allow concrete to achieve optimum viscosity and provide adequate balance between fluidity and lamination resistance, which are the opposite properties manifested when water is added
In the late 2007, BASF presented a new development – Smart Dynamic Construction™, the technology for pro-ducing concrete mixes, which is intended to raise the flu-idity class of the Grade P4 (П4) and P5 (П5) concretes to a higher level Concrete, produced using this technology, has all properties of self-compacting concretes, while the concrete production process, used in this case, is no more complicated, than traditional conventional concrete production processes The new concept meets ever-growing demand for more flowing concrete mixtures and provides a wide range of advantages:
Economical:Due to a unique process, occurring in concrete, saving of binders and aggregates with a fraction of <0125 mm is provided A stable and high-flowing concrete mix be-comes almost self-leveling and does not require any com-paction in placing The placing process is simple enough to be performed by a single operator, and this saves up to 40% of the working time In addition, the production pro-cess is nearly as simple as the process of production of conventional concretes, since the mix is not very sensitive to water content changes, occurred due to aggregate hu-midity level fluctuations
Environmental:Low content of cement (below 380 kg), whose production is accompanied with CO₂ emission, increases the environ-mental safety Furthermore, due to a high fluidity, concrete completely flows around rebars, thus preventing external corrosion of the rebars This feature increases the endur-ance of the concrete and, as a result, service life of rein-forced concrete products
Ergonomic:Due to self-compaction properties, this concrete does not require vibration compaction operations, which helps workers to avoid detrimental to health noise and vibra-tions Furthermore, the concrete mix formulation provides concrete with a low stiffness, thus increasing its workabil-ity When a stabilizing additive is added into a concrete mix, a stable microgel is formed on the surface of cement particles, which produces a “bearing skeleton” in the ce-ment paste and prevents lamination of the concrete mix Meanwhile, the “bearing skeleton” allows aggregates (sand and gravel) to move freely, therefore, the workability of the concrete mix does not change This self-compact-ing concrete technology allows concreting of any structure with a dense reinforcement and complex geometric shapes, without the use of fine aggregates In the pouring process, the mix becomes self-compacted and squeezes entrained air from itself

Manufactured concrete admixtures
Attractive design, variety of products, reduced construction time and cost-efficiency are the main advantages of the products made of stiff concrete mixes
Besides, the industry of stiff concrete mixes is character-ized by a very high level of production process automa-tion Process automation imposes on concrete mixes such a requirement as the constancy of characteristics regard-less of varying water content and grain size of raw materi-als used Raw concrete strength and concrete early strength are critical parameters of the production process
The BASF solution in this area is the Concept of Four Ben-efits (FIT 4 VALLUE), with a series of the MasterCast (RheoFIT) products being a key element of the Concept The FIT 4 VALLUE Concept and the MasterCast (RheoFIT) products provide the following:
Cost advantages Optimized mix composition (reduced amount of cement) Reduced curing time Extended range of acceptable moisture content Decreased need for care and maintenance Reduced number of defective products
Productivity advantages Reduced production cycle intervals, production process acceleration
Improved ability to fill moulds Improved compactibility Enhanced extrudability
Reduced process equipment wear Simplified process of extraction from moulds Improved deformation resistance
Aesthetics advantages Efflorescence (bloom) control Smooth flat surface Accurate edges and side surfaces produced Attractive surface appearance Improved color solutions, uniform colors Dirt-repellant ability
Reliability and endurance advantages Increased strength (raw concrete strength, early strength, ultimate strength)
Reduced water absorption Increased water resistance Improved freeze-thaw cycle resistance Enhanced abrasion resistance

Admixtures for air entrained concrete
Air-entraining additives are intended to entrain specified amount of air into concrete mix and to produce a system of closed air pores, evenly distributed throughout the volume, in the matured concrete
The use of air-entraining additives allows you to: Obtain increased frost-resistance concrete F300 (II) and above, in particular, at salt ex-posures (recommended for road and airport runway concretes)
Reduce concrete density by 50–250 kg/m³
Reduce demand of the mix for water, improve deformation and thermal properties
At a lower content of fine aggregates, obtain products with a conjoint homogeneous struc-ture that prevents corrosion of the reinforce-ment
Small, spherical pores increase the fluidity of a concrete mix and thereby improve the work-ability of concrete; product molding period shortens; better compaction of the mix is pro-vided; mixture lamination during transporta-tion and placing into molds is decreased
Improve heat and acoustic insulation proper-ties of concrete

Hardening accelerators and retarders
During production of civil products and structures, sometimes it’s necessary to intensify or slow down cement hardening processes
A slow-down of the cement setting and harden-ing processes is required for concreting mas-sive structures or buildings, especially in hot weather conditions, or in case of long-term con-crete transportation intervals, as well as for fin-ishing exterior wall panels, using the method of decorative coarse aggregate baring, etc
Generally, cement setting accelerators and ce-ment hardening additives aim to activate the cement hydration process to accelerate the process of formation of high-strength hydration products
By accelerating concrete hardening processes, it’s possible to reduce cement and steam con-sumption and to increase turnover of moulds
The use of concrete hardening accelerators allows a 3–4-fold strength build-up rate increase at a natural hardening; as a result, concrete with 50–60% of the selling strength may be pro-duced in 24 hours from the end of the molding process When hardening accelerators are used to produce concretes, exposed to steaming, the isothermal warming period shortens twice, or heat consumption drops by 20%, or cement consumption decreases by 10–15%

Winter concreting admixtures
Concrete production and performance of concreting operations are complex technological processes, becoming much more complicated in winter
The hydration reaction slows down already at temperatures below +15°C and completely stops at below-zero temperatures In these cir-cumstances, standard formulations of concrete mixes should be modified and concrete produc-tion and care processes should be changed
The following technologies are used to produce concrete in winter: water and/ or inert material heating to raise temperature of offloaded con-crete mixes; antifreeze additives are also used
When winter concreting additives are dissolved, chemical interaction, rather than a simple distri-bution of additive particles (molecules and ions) across the water volume, takes place As a re-sult, solvates (compounds of dissolved additive particulates) with water molecules are formed, thus lowering the freezing point of water
Substances with weak antifreeze properties, which nevertheless relate to the group of strong concrete hardening accelerators and cause se-vere heat losses in concrete at early concrete mix and concrete hardening stages, are also used as an additive for winter concreting
The main goal, pursued by using winter con-creting additives, is to ensure stable perfor-mance of the concrete mix and concrete re-gardless of the ambient temperatures The use of these additives makes it possible to maintain a high construction pace in the winter period without compromising the quality of facilities constructed

Dependent on the service life of buildings and temperature behavior during masonry construc-tion, different mortar brands and types are used in the civil industry
Severe process requirements are imposed both on masonry mortars and concrete working for-mulations Mortars should be ductile and have good water-retaining property, which is regu-lated by mortar composition (amount of binder) and the presence of additives to provide mor-tars with a number of specifically-defined prop-erties, which are defined dependent on the composition, mortar process requirements, and conditions of use
Mortars should have a long-lasting workability period, reduce sand lamination and ensure ap-propriate joint grouting stability and provide good adhesion to the stone surface Since the so-called “rejuvenation” of set masonry mor-tars, ie the addition of water and, sometimes, binders, is not allowed, because this does not restore original performance and deteriorates quality, the use of the BASF-manufactured chemical additives for mortars becomes the best solution

Accessory materials for concrete production
While planning the construction and producing concrete products, much attention should be given to concreting operations, which involve the use of variety of materials for formwork and concrete curing
Formwork oil is an indispensable material in concreting Experts from the BASF Concrete Admixtures Division have developed a wide range of innovative products for formworks These products may be used in the production of precast concrete structures directly at con-struction sites and at plants
The use of formwork oil allows easy and full concrete separation from the mould and also significantly improves the quality of concrete surfaces, on which demanding requirements are currently imposed
Another effective way of improving matured concrete properties is to use concrete curing materials, which eliminates the necessity of spraying water onto fresh concrete surface and covering it with polyethylene In this case, a dirt- and water-repellent film, which improves the endurance and notably reduces concrete shrinkage deformation, is formed on the con-crete surface
In the pouring process, the mix becomes self-compacting and squeezes entrained air from itself
