Abstract

OLED CONSTELLATION LIGHT, the emotion of movement

The project focuses on emotional lighting, therefore the outcome is a mild and sensitive combination of practical mood lighting and a small-scale art installa-tion for the domestic or institutional use .

The main idea behind the submission project was to create an object that like the OLED itself was light, visually as well as physically, and that it’s lightness would be translated also by the slight movement of the object.

“Constellation”, the name chosen for the concept, is a metaphor, because like we do get to see a constellation in the sky and do get the sensation that the stars are distanced from one another but from certain perspectives the vision is changing, also here in this project depending on the angle one is observing the object, the vision changes and by this creating a variety of visual sensations.

Constellation OLED light is a very elegant, arty and contemporary light object that is thought to cohabit with a wide range of ages inside of domestic environ-ments as well as lounge areas or halls in commercial spaces. Because of its elegance, simplicity and a “touch” of color it can be referred as a decorative item when it’s not powered and by that adding to the object another function.

An important fact is that “Constellation” is very easily modifiable object for the manufacturer, which means that by minimal changes of the designed proposal an infinity of configurations can be created. Because this and the relatively cheap manufacturing process of Constellation, the final commercial value will justify the cost of the OLED technology.

Technical Description

OLED CONSTELLATION LIGHT, the emotion of movement

The Constellation OLED light consist of only 3 different objects, the octagonal shaped OLED, the Lighting disks and the Sticks. They can be infinetly combined and produce a variety of designs that will draw different shapes in the air.

1 -Parts and Assembly Explanation:1.1 - The Lighting DiskWhat holds the OLED device is a set of two colour tinted transparent circular disks that holds the device between them.

The OLED is attached to the first disk, from now on mentioned as the female disk, in the specific space for the Octagonal shaped OLED. After this, the second disk is slided in throught 4 holes distributed along a geometrical circle around the octagonal hole on the female disk. Thanks to the 4 pins on the male disk the OLED remains trapped between the two disks. When the two disks are aligned, They are assembled to the supplied Sticks from the specific hole disposed at the edge between the two disks. Once the final Lighting Disk is assembled to the Stick it will obtain the electricty needed to function and will transmit it to the device through a conductive transparent coating

Technical Description

1.2 - The StickIn orded to assemble all the light composition a set of Sticks are added to the design. This sticks balance and guide the Lighting disks and other Sticks through space.

What makes this sticks special is that, thanks to the patella inspired design, they have the ability to rotate and transform the gravitation and ambient forces into movement. A mandatory requirement for the Constellation OLED light to function, is to be energy supplied that is why, the Sticks have an extruded hole that facilitates the wireing from point to point.

2 - Manufacturing and Material information:As mentioned before, all the design is always based on one principle, the customization of two manufactured objects, the Disks and the Sticks.

2.1 - The Lighting Disk The two disk can be made out of blowed glass or thermoformed PP and have a manufactuing messure of 150mm diameter. Therefore all the Organic forms intented for the emotional appealing of the light are performed by traditional die cutting. The resulting object is drilled at the edge of the quadrant and the wasted material is recycled

2.1 - The StickThe Stick consists of an extruded surface made out of aluminium or other light material choosen by the manufactured. To make the Stick more appealing, all the endings are elliptically finished.

After the stick is manufactured, the intended curvature is performed by tradi-tional ordinary process such as guided bending.
