October is
Stewardship Month at
Union Church!
We’re Planning!
October is the month we start a
holy conversation every year, a
conversation about how we can live
faithfully and sustain a mission of
relevant important work as a church.
We’re talking about pledging funds for
next year’s work, and hope you will
join the conversation.
What sustains you about this
community? How could we help sustain
others? What’s the right amount to
contribute? What happens if someone is
in need?
All this month, pray with us, and be
a steward of our journey. Let’s talk
faithfully so we can grow by leaps and
bounds! (2 Thessalonians 1:3).
How Does this work?
Many hands and many wallets make
possible every aspect of our church
life: from worship services, to serving
others in need. (Continued on page 4)
Introducing new Nursery
Caregivers
Friends, it is with great joy that the
Faith Development Board introduces
you to our new Nursery Care Team!
Martina Leforce and Hope Tarter
will be with us in the nursery on
Wednesday evenings and Sunday
mornings to help care for our smallest
disciples.
Martina studied Child and Family
Studies at Berea College, and has
recently become well
known as hav ing
spearheaded the Berea
Summer Food Service
Project through Grow
Appalachia. You may
also know her from the
Berea Farmer’s Market,
Sustainable Berea, or
Berea Coffee and Tea. She loves kids
and finding interesting ways to teach
them. Martina has a son, Leif, and three
amazing neices that you might see with
her or her mother, Linda Leforce.
Hope surrounds herself with
children as much as possible.
She works both as a
caretaker in the 3 year-old
class at Bright Beginnings
Daycare and as a nanny to a
family in Richmond. She just
couldn’t get enough kids in
her life, though, so she’s
joined with Union Church
to spend time with our beloveds, too.
Hope is a student at Eastern Kentucky
University and is the daughter of Patty
Tarter and niece to Susie Ritchie.
Please help us welcome Hope and
Martina with big smiles and lots of
gratitude when you see them. They are
fantastic!
Sunday, Oct. 2, 10:40 am - Combined Service with First Christian Church!
Each year we celebrate World Communion Sunday with our sister church, First Christian.
This year we’ll be worship THERE (206 Chestnut). Due to construction at city hall, parking is
at a premium. We recommend parking at Union & walking, or taking as many people in your
car with you as possible. It’s going to be a great service & a visible example of cooperation
and discipleship! See you there! AND we’re invited to stay for Coffee Hour after the service.

From Rev. Rachel
Dear Beloved Community,
Les and I are so joyously
overwhelmed by your love and
excitement for our baby boy! We
can’t wait to wrap him in all the
amazing blankets and outfits you
have given us, and to surround him
with the love that you have offered.
As we don’t yet know exactly when
he’ll make his appearance, we
wanted to go ahead and set some
expectations and answer some
common questions so that we’re all
prepared.
Our plan is for Les to deliver the
baby in the hospital where she
works in Louisville (University of
Louisville Hospital). Obviously, that’s
a bit far away, but we will let you
know through Pastor Kent and
Wyndee Holbrook (859-200-9880
cell) when The Big Event happens.
We promise to send a photo
through the church email once
we’re looking a bit presentable!
We’ve learned a lot lately about
the facial recognition software that
Facebook is using to tag peoples’
faces in a way that follow them
through life, and it’s rather
concerning to us. We’ve decided not
to post photos (except for a
possible very rare exception) on
Facebook. We hope you ’ l l
understand that we’re not planning
to use it as the main medium of
communication for the baby, but we
may use email to share some
photos. (A lot depends on how
much energy we have!) If we do
share a photo with you, please don’t
re-share it on Facebook or other
social media platforms without
checking with us. The same request
applies to your own eventual photos
of him. We appreciate your help in
that!
The other major concern we’ve
had is that there is a resurgence of
Whooping Cough in the last few
years, and doctors recommend that
all people who will hold or touch
the baby in the first six months be
vaccinated with a TDaP (Tetanus,
Diphtheria, and Pertussis (Whooping
Cough)) vaccine. It’s not the same
thing as a Tetanus booster, but it’s
free on most insurance plans and
can be given at a local pharmacy.
People that seem totally healthy can
carry the virus, which can kill a
newborn, so we hope you’ll
understand that we won’t offer him
around for holding the first many
months, just to be safe. We'll follow
our doctor's guidance here. If you’ve
had the vaccine, we'd love for you to
visit with him, though!
Some have asked how they can
help with things like meals, which is
so kind! Since we have recently
purchased a house in Lexington, I
suspect that not many will want to
make the drive, but we would
gratefully accept frozen gluten-free
meals that are delivered to the
church freezer. Gluten is a sneaky
substance which hides in many things
(sauces, soups, grains that have been
milled, etc), so a freezer bag of
chopped veggies for a crock pot
meal could be a great help to us if
you're wanting to feed us. Rev. Kent
has said that he would be willing to
drive them up. Please let him know if
you leave something in the freezer,
and be sure to mark it.
The con-
gregation has
generous l y
offered eight
weeks of
paid parental
leave, and I’m
able to add
two weeks of my vacation to that.
We are so grateful for the church
being willing to invest in our family’s
bonding time and adjustment in this
way. It is truly important. I plan to
be totally away from church
(including email, cell phone, and
facebook) during that time.
The church has hired two people
at 10 hrs per week to help cover
some of my work. Things related to
Faith Development and Community
L i f e and Growth w i l l b e
administered by Kim Kobersmith.
Rev. Carla Gilbert will assist Rev.
Kent with pastoral care. This kind of
family growth is good for the church
family, too. Where you can, try out
a new role or a new way to help.
When everyone pitches in, the
church finds more abilities than it
thought it had!
I will miss you all while I am gone,
but I am so excited about this new
way that our family is growing. I
can’t wait to see how the church
family has grown in my absence, too!
Thank you for all of your love and
support. Lots of peace, love, and
new life to you all!

Union Church receives no grants,
no outside support from Berea
College, and only a few “legacy”
dollars from trust or benevolence
funds. It is supported by our gifts and
tithes, and without the love and
kindness of all, we couldn’t reach,
serve, worship, or risk in God’s name
the way we do.
Can you help? Yes! Make an
estimate of what you can contribute
in 2017 by the
end of the month
and we’ll be able
to craft a
r e s p o n s i v e ,
effective budget.
Get involved
as a volunteer here or in the
community: exercise your faith
muscles in compassionate service so
we can BE the church, not just look
like one.
Try tithing (donating 10% of your
income), because it changes and
deepens you spiritually AND
empowers the hope and love in this
world that matter to you.
Truly there is no church without
you!
What’s Next? All this month we
ask you to pray, talk, ask questions,
and engage the idea of how we can
give thanks, and grow our faith by
leaps and bounds.
In the middle of the month
everyone will receive information on
what hopes and projects our board
members, our church council
representatives, and our pastors are
forecasting for next year. Then we’ll
pray hard and work to support those
goals with our time and talent.
Shortly before the end of the
month, everyone will receive a pledge
card in the mail to easily record your
estimate of how much
you can contribute.
Big or small, every gift
mat ters and i s
welcome. Our goal is
to have 100% of
U n i o n C h u r c h
supporters on-board
and part of the ministry by making a
pledge. Any amount, Any Time. We
want to be “all in” even if you’re just
testing the waters!
Also, instead of a paper card, you
can pledge ANYTIME by going to the
church website (http:/ /union-
church.org/donate/growing-faithfully-
by-leaps-and-bounds/ ). Both paper
and web pledges are confidential and
only handled by people supervised by
our Financial Secretary, Patti
Smithson.
Celebration Sunday, October
30! Final Budget Presented in
November. On the last Sunday of
the month, October 30, we will
celebrate with gratitude and offer up
our hopes in worship. Then our
Finance Board and staff get to work
matching what we’ve estimated to a
responsible budget. Everyone
discusses and then votes on the
result so we can enter the new year
ready to grow!
Faith Growing by Leaps and
Bounds. Our inspiration this year
comes from Paul’s 2nd letter to the
ancient church in Thessaloniki:
“Brothers and sisters, we must always
thank God for you. This is only right
because your faithfulness is growing by
leaps and bounds, and the love that all
of you have for each other is increasing.”
(Contemporary English Bible, 2
Thess.:1:3)
And Union Church is growing!
There are members joining the work
of love and justice, and we are
growing our faith by deeper
commitments to ending the toxic
effects of racial and gender injustice,
offering more support to refugee
families, speaking up against violence
and amplifying the ways we teach the
way of peace. Your pledge helps us
do that effectively and sustainably.
Please talk and pray and query and
then act, and bless, and spread
hope with your tithe or gift. You
matter, and so does the community
that God calls us to be and become.
By leaps and bounds!

You may have heard our messages sharing our online
giving tools with you. New things can often seem
overwhelming, I understand. When something is working,
we don’t like to change. But this tool makes a difference in
our ability to minister in times of need by knowing we can
expect regular gifts from the friends and members of
Union Church. Benefits of online giving to you are:
The ease of being able to sign up for, and to donate or
pay for an event all in one place.
Even when you’re traveling or visiting family away from
our four walls, your ability to give is with you through
our website, the mobile giving app, or through text
messaging to continue to faithfully give.
We now even have the ability to set up recurring
giving, meaning, you set the amount to want to donate
to a certain fund, and it’s automatic each month.
You can login to your giving account and track your
donations for the year. Use this for your taxes and set
pledge goals for yourself.
We welcome you to try our online giving resources.
We have support documents to help you sign up to give
online. Please contact the office or send us an email if you
have any questions.

Hope in Action
Union Church is so
excited and honored to
receive this Hope in
Action award!
We have long had a commitment
to being environmentally conscious,
seeing it as a clear mandate in our
role as stewards to the earth. In
2008-9, that commitment became
firmer as we adopted a mission
statement that included a charge “to
seek the well -being of our
community, of all our volunteers and
staff, and of God’s earth in all that we
undertake alone and together.”
The church began tak ing
intentional action to live into this
mission by addressing low-hanging
fruit of energy efficiency: switching
our incandescent bulbs to CFLs,
closing doors and not heating or
cooling rooms not in use, obsessively
switching off lights, and then doing a
capital campaign and renovation that
included lots of unsexy but vital
upgrades. We moved from a boiler
and chiller system to a high efficiency
dual fuel heat pumps and mini-split
system, which allows for greater
flexibility in what rooms can be
climate controlled and when. All
this allowed us to reduce our energy
use – both electricity and natural gas
- by 50%!
This year was the icing on the
cake – or the roof, as it happens! We
had been dreaming of installing solar
panels on our sanctuaries south
facing roof and determined that 78 –
260 watt solar panels would provide
at least 25% of our current electricity
use and this seemed like a feasible
dream. With the plan in hand we
then received a $25,000 anonymous
donation toward the project cost of
$61,000.
We funded the rest of the
project using a maintenance fund
donated years ago. This fund will be
repaid by the dollars saved on
electricity and electricity sold to the
uti l ity company through net
metering.
The system was installed by Solar
Energy Solutions and started
producing energy on the summer
solstice: June 21st, 2016. Our plan is
to continue looking for ways to
reduce our energy use with the help
of the monitoring system installed at
the same time to track electricity use
throughout the building with the goal
of further reduction of electricity
usage and adding more panels, so
that one day we will be fully solar-
powered.

conservation! — with Rachel & Les

Witness for Peace
Witness for Peace Program at WNL
on October 12, 5:45 p.m. — Mark your calendars now!
On Wednesday evening, October 12, the Mission and
Service and Community Life and Growth Boards are
joining together to sponsor this year’s Witness for Peace
Southeast program and speaker from Columbia, South
America.
This year’s speaker is Marcia Mejia, an indigenous
Nonam leader from the community of Santa Rosa de
Guayacan, located along the San Juan River, a
southwestern community of Columbia. Marcia is also a
s p o k e s w o m a n f o r t h e n e t w o r k
CONPAZ(Communities Building Peace in the
Territories), which has sent delegations to Havana
about the issues of victims’ rights and reparations.
And she is a representative for ACIVA, the larger
departmental indigenous network of Valle del Cauca and
has been working on a proposal for training indigenous
women to safeguard ancestral knowledge. Marcia will be
accompanied by her nine-year old son, a translator, and a
driver from WFP Southeast (USA).
Marcia Mejia will also be speaking at a noontime event
on campus and to P&SJ (Peace and Social Justice) classes.
As is traditional, St. Clare’s Catholic Church and the
Friends Meeting are invited to join us for the evening
program. We will be inviting students for the evening, as
well.
The meal will be rice and beans. CL&G will be cooking
up a generous amount of both, but we also invite all of
you, if you have a favorite rice and beans dish, to please
bring it along. Desserts are also welcome.

Blood Drives
Blood Drives done here at Union
Church have been organized by Joyce Henderson
as the volunteer for the Kentucky Blood Center. They
call the position the Chairperson of the blood drive.
This past month on September 20th Joyce “chaired” her
last blood drive. Therefore the Blood Center and the
church are looking for someone to continue this
valuable service to our community. The last blood
drive was a great success—73 pints were collected
and, since each pint is separated and assists 3
procedures, our blood drive participants assisted in
219 medical procedures! 25 were first-time donors!
Chairperson responsibilities include the following
every other month:
Tape directional arrow signs the morning of
the blood drive and take down after the blood
drive.
Lock the doors after KBC staff has cleared all equipment out of church.
The church staff has the
doors unlocked and tables and
chairs are available. An optional task that the
Chairperson can take on is finding two volunteers during
the blood drive. One to meet and greet donors and the
other to maintain the canteen area for drinks. This could
be done by one volunteer. There are already 5-6
volunteers who have been providing this service,
therefore it is a matter of making sure they are available
and putting a schedule together.
Many other tasks that Joyce does will be taken on by
Diane Kennedy who works for the Kentucky Blood
Center and is the contact person for the Chairpersons
of each blood drive.
Please consider this important service to our
community. Contact Dave Kobersmith if you can
help out, [email protected] or call 986-3725.

Everyone has a theological perspective, regardless of academic training. Thinking about God, and our
relationship to spiritual matters, is for everyone. While “theology” is an important academic discipline and a
systematic way to think about God and the human relation to the divine, is isn’t limited to dead German white-guy
professors. We’ll explore our own theological thinking and look at the thought of some of the great theological
thinkers, and try to do some of our own, too!

We, the people of Union
Church, seek to live out our
discipleship to God as a community inspired
by Jesus’ transforming love.
As a gathering of those seeking to
boldly and creatively embody Christ’s life
and ministry, we commit ourselves to work
and fellowship that makes the radical and
inclusive love of God, the beloved
community proclaimed by Jesus, and the
continuing inspiration of the Holy Spirit
