Conservation Comment The NC Zoo has been an active partner in the red wolf breeding program since 1995. We care for several wolves off exhibit for this purpose. Red wolves are one of the most endangered canid species (wolves/dogs/foxes) in the world. As of 2016, only 45-60 left in the wild!!! Red wolves can only be found in the wild in eastern North Carolina! With the help of 44 facilities, around 200 red wolves are under human care. In 2002, two red wolf pups born at the NC Zoo were put in a wild den with two other pups of similar age. The mother accepted and fostered them!
