A Message From The PresidentGreetings, There are only 43 days until spring! It has been a bit chilly for me this winter, I do not know about you, but I long for the warm weather: fishing, golf, and long days.
In this issue we announce the golf course for the 30th Annual Greater Portsmouth Chamber of Commerce Golf Tournament. It is a Friday so that many of the golfers can extend their weekend with a great round of golf! See page 3! Many thanks are extended to Lisa Gainty and Ray Tweedie for their work in setting up this event. If weather history holds, June is likely to be a great month and we expect that the City will see a big increase in traffic and guests. Once again Portsmouth will endure increased vehicular traffic and of course parking shortages. The Chamber Board of Directors and I have become very concerned about the impact of fewer available spaces amidst the current and upcoming expansion of business downtown. Last year the garage was full and forced to close more than one hundred times. This occurred even though we had about 200 surface spaces available at the Portwalk development. This year those 200 spaces are gone. The City is working hard to add spaces, including working with the Portwalk developer on another temporary site for surface parking; however the proposed site will only have about 86 spaces. How much longer can this go on? The Chamber is committed to helping find solutions. We recently received a draft of an economic impact study we had done for downtown. We have asked several members of the Economic Development Commission,

Faculty of the Paul School (formerly the Whittemore School of Business) at UNH and Ross Gittel to help us add more substantive elements to the study that we will share with you and the community. It is our feeling that it is important to look at the big picture which includes current and future development downtown, parking and pedestrian access. Looking at any one aspect of downtown development is out of context. You are important to this process and we will be asking your help by participating in surveys and engagements where we can convene numbers of you and the community in presentations and discussions so that you may understand the future of downtown. It is inconceivable that development will cease. It is important we can create an environment that supports both smart development and the preservation of our City of Portsmouth which has been and will continue to be a magnet for people and businesses. PS: Please join us for a Bank of America Breakfast Forum with NH DOT Commissioner Christopher D. Clement. We all know that the condition of our bridges and roadways is dire.“Just 19 percent of the state’s road pavement is in good condition, he said, with 44 percent rated fair and 37 percent rated poor. Some 140 state-owned bridges and 353 locally owned spans are red-listed, meaning they have one or more major structural elements in poor or worse shape.” On the Seacoast we all have experienced what happens when infrastructure fails. The Memorial Bridge replacement is a great example. The impacts to our businesses and disruption are real. The costs are high. Waiting only adds to the problem. Come and hear Commissioner Clement on February 27, 2013 at the Sheraton Portsmouth Harborside from 7:30-9:00a
