BK is now participating in International Lasallian Days for Peace. Breaking the Cycle of Poverty to Build Peace is the theme for the 2014 International Lasallian Days for Peace (ILDP). Following the outcomes of the 3rd International Symposium of Young Lasallians (ISYL), this year’s ILDP focuses on the movement to eradicate poverty, particularly as it affects access to nutrition and survival.

Lasallians are encouraged to participate by engaging in and learning about issues related to fair trade, ethical retail practices, food consumption practices, and issues of hunger in communities. Emphasis for this theme comes from Pope Francis’ appeal to support the Caritas Internationalis #Food4All Campaign, calling those who are able to take action on this issue. “We are in front of a global scandal of around one billion people … one billion people who still suffer from hunger today. We cannot look the other way and pretend that

The impact of Bryan Patrick O’Brien ’65 on Bishop Kelley athletics spans four decades

- as a student, a coach, and a parent. A member of the first class that completed all four

years at Kelley, Bryan lettered in three sports - four years in both football and wrestling

and one year in track. He won the Edison Wrestling Tournament twice, which was the

equivalent of winning State at that time. Bryan earned a full scholarship to the Air Force

Academy but ultimately graduated from Missouri State University where he continued to

excel as a wrestler, taking second place in national competition. Bryan returned to help

coach at Bishop Kelley in 1974 and subsequently taught at Booker T. Washington where

he worked with future Olympic gold medalist Kenny Monday. Ever the Kelley supporter,

Bryan worked with other alumni to organize the Junior Comets Wrestling Program and

also volunteered as an assistant wrestling coach with Denny Krafft and Fred Davis. Bryan

also helped coach girls’ soccer but returned to the position of head wrestling coach from

1990-1994 while his daughter Shelly ’93 and son Daniel ’94 were in school. Daughter Sta-

cy graduated in 1990. Tresa Green Adams ’95 set state records during her softball

pitching career at Bishop Kelley and helped her team to four state tournament appear-

ances, winning back-to-back titles in 1991 and 1992. She was the first player in Oklahoma

fast-pitch softball history to rack up 100 wins, 1,000 innings, and 1,000 strikeouts in a

high school career. Under the coaching of Gordon Morgan, Tresa helped the Comets

compile a record of 142 wins and 38 losses through her four years. Her college career

was equally stellar. At the University of Tulsa, she set many national, state, and college

records for pitching, strikeouts, and shutouts that still remain in the top ten. Her 44 ap-

pearances in the 1998 season still stands as a record at TU. Barry Hinson coached Comet

basketball from 1988-1993. During those six years he compiled a 109-50 win/ loss record

and made two appearances in the state semi-finals. He ranks as the basketball coach

with the highest winning percentage in the school’s history. Bishop Kelley was his last

high school coaching position before joining the ranks of college coaching where he has

enjoyed much success including four years on Bill Self’s staff at the University of Kansas

(2008-2012.) Considered one of the top basketball programs in the country, the Jayhawks

went to NCAA Championship game in 2012.

His first stop after leaving Kelley in 1993 was at Oral Roberts University as Bill Self’s assis-

tant and then as his successor. In 1999, Missouri State beckoned and Barry spent nine

seasons guiding the Bears to a 169-117 record with four post-season NIT appearanc-

es. Currently, Barry is entering his third year at Southern Illinois University where he is re

-energizing the program. The Salukis advanced to the 2014 Missouri Valley Conference

Tournament semi-finals for the first time in seven years and Barry finished 2nd in the

voting for MVC Coach of the Year.

Dear Bishop Kelley Families,

PTO is very proud to be a part of the spirited Bishop Kelley community. I am grateful

for all of our volunteers who share their time and talents with this organization. Our

PTO committees are off to a great start this year. We had our first meeting and two

parents volunteered to be the new Co-chairs for Club ’18, Jamie Martin and Cathe-

rine Hart. Several moms offered to help them as well. I was very pleased to see so

many parents from the freshman class in attendance. This is a great group of parents

and students! Please contact Jamie and Catherine if you have any questions regard-

ing Club ’18. [email protected], [email protected]

Our Spiritual Development Chair, Kathy Sands, welcomes anyone who would like to volunteer or learn more about Adoration and spend one hour of their time in this centuries old Eucharistic devotion of prayer. The next Adoration is Friday October 3rd. Please contact Kathy at [email protected].

I want to thank Celeste Cole, Christen Miles, Michele Eagle, Louis Rauner, Margaret

Oglesby and the senior parent volunteers for making the Staff Appreciation Luncheon

a success. Freshman parents will help with next month’s luncheon on October 9th.

Thanks to Noreen McCorkle, Rachel Mathis, Jennifer Hames, Rachel Hallum, Jessica

Franczyk, and Tzeitel Looper who volunteered a few hours on a Saturday evening to

help make the second annual middle school “Minute to Win It” a huge success!

We are looking forward to celebrating Kidfest October 3rd from 5:30-7:00pm on the

football practice field (area outside the Commons). Please come and enjoy a beauti-

ful fall evening with your family and support the Comet football team as they take on

McAlester. PTO will be selling water, pop, and pizza. Kelley Krazies will be facilitating

games and “blow-ups” for the kids. Contact Brenda Robbins if you have any ques-

tions. [email protected]

PTO helps sponsor the annual Fall High School Preview on Sunday, October 12th. Middle School students are invited to visit our BK campus for informational meetings and tours. We serve lemonade and cookies to the students and parents. Patti Bush is in need of volunteers to bake cookies for this event. Please contact Patti [email protected] if you would like to help.

Our Moms in Prayer group (dads and grandparents are welcome too), is still meeting

in the chapel foyer every Wednesday at 1:45pm to pray for our students and staff.

All are welcome to come.

Thank you for your continued support of the Bishop Kelley PTO. All are welcome to attend our next PTO meeting Tuesday, October 7th at 8:30am in the Stephenson Fam-ily Library.

Save the date, Saturday, April 11, 2015, for the 35th Annual Bishop Kelley Auction, Kelleypalooza,

which will take place outdoors on the Bishop Kelley campus. The evening will have that “music festi-val” feel with food trucks and bands before dinner, the fabulous Mary Cogan for music and dancing under the stars after dinner, and a Live and Silent Auction. Laura Duffy and Maggie Tims are the chairs for this great gathering of

the Bishop Kelley community.

The original Lollapalooza music festival began in 1991 and has featured fa-mous bands and guests such as our very own Father O’Brien (guest not band

). Did you know that Father O’Brien attended Lollapalooza with his sister in 1992 in Rosenberg, Texas? He was looking forward to the music of Pearl Jam and Soundgarden but was slightly distracted by an hour in the medical tent because a guy fell on his neck in the mosh pit. Oh my, who knew? Kelleypalooza promises to be safer for Father.

Coming up for the BK Auction is Gift Gathering. Each year we gather dona-tions for the Auction Gift Gathering in second quarter, first block classes. If you would like to be a Gift Gathering Mom, email Robin at [email protected]. Beginning Thursday, October 30, a Gift Gathering Mom will visit your student’s class for three Thursdays to gather donations. The BK community is so very generous each year and donates over $100,000

in items, gift cards, experiences, and services to Gift Gathering that will be

auctioned in April. These donations are the foundation of the funds raised at

the Auction. We are amazed and grateful each year at the generosity (checks

and cash) and creativity (certificates for tires, a week at a home in Colorado,

a hand-made BK quilt, a gourmet dinner for 10, etc.) in the donations to the

Auction Gift Gathering. The money raised at the 2015 Auction will go to-

wards tuition assistance and replacing our gym floors. (The large gym floor is

the original that was installed in 1960.) Thank you for your support of Bishop

Kelley High School!
